Great Location, Great Place

  • 5 of 5
Located in a private, quiet coastal area where there isn't too much recreational activities going on out your back porch. Lobster boats and kayaks but not much else. Great spot for access to the water and hiking and swimming.
Also near Camden, Rockland and Thomaston, so somewhat larger towns with great food and sights are nearby.
The studio is clean, spacious and just a great location. Just what we were looking for!

So wonderful I almost want to keep it a secret

  • 5 of 5
. . . but the Clark Island cottage is perfect. Clean, comfortably appointed, great bed. Gorgeous spot, perfect for kayaking, a lovely walk to quarry swimming, with a sunny deck to watch the birds & have a glass of wine. Sherm & Suzanne are warm & helpful, accessible but never intrusive.
This is place is not for people seeking tourist "attractions" -- unless you are attracted, as we are, by quiet simplicity and the constant change of tide and sky.

Wonderful getaway at Clark Island Cottage

  • 5 of 5
This review is long overdue for the wonderful week we spent at Suzanne and Sherm's cottage! Everything was pretty much perfect and as we expected. Running outside to get to the bathhouse wasn't a big deal, it's literally about 5-6 steps from the cottage's door. The cottage itself was comfortably equipped and the views were spectacular. We loved waking up to the ocean/inlet views every morning. Our hosts were great, just enough contact to ensure we enjoyed our stay. The location is ideal...close enough to Rockland to ensure lots of activities if you choose to venture out, but also quiet enough to actually relax. If you need to be near hustle and bustle or want to be walking distance to a town, this is probably not the best option for you. But if you want to get away, enjoy nature, lovely views, etc, it's perfect. Definitely would recommend and hope to come back in the future!

Clark Island Cottage = Piece of Heaven in Maine

  • 5 of 5
I stayed and Sherm and Suzanne's cottage for three weeks. It was clean, neat, quaint, and quintessential Maine. A well equipped kitchen, plenty of reading material, cable tv, a lovely deck and tons of quiet, water and trees. I am a writer and was having a hard time finding quiet and peace to write at home in my NYC apartment. This retreat was the perfect solution. I was able to write, walk, read, swim, hunt for cranberries, apples, nuts, cook lobster, and enjoy the fall colors that changed my surroundings daily into new glorious scenery. The bed was so comfortable I slept like a baby, and the linens were plush. Fire wood provided and a wonderful little wood burning stove kept me cozy and warm on cooler fall nights. A near by quarry pond was the perfect swimming hole. Lots of quiet roads to walk on and Rockland, 8 miles a way is a great town to hang out in, eat, and shop.

Would I recommend this place? Yes! Yes! Yes!

A truly beautiful and relaxing cottage

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Clark Island Cottage last summer and had a truly wonderful time - not only was the cottage clean as a whistle and comfortable, but the location is one of the most beautiful we have seen.

You won't hear much - just an occasional lobster boat passing by, seabirds calling to each other and the leaves rustling above in canopy. What you will see from the cottage's many windows or the spacious deck will make your vacation - from sun up to sun down there is something to look at.

Clark Island Cottage is the place to finally finish that book you have been reading, kayak up Long Cove to watch Bald Eagles or just relax and enjoy the fact that the phone isn't ringing.

Its really obvious that the Hoyt's want you to enjoy your time - from the comfortable furniture to the small details like nice bedding, cotton sheets and towels in great condition. You can tell that these people want you to love their property as much as they do.

The bathhouse, while separate from the main cottage, is connected by the porch and is only about 5 steps away. No big deal actually and we found it to be a charming attribute.

As for the mosquitoes, welcome to Maine people! These little bugs are just part of life in Maine and although we don't live there (wish we did) we just expect them to be around - this is true of any house ANYWHERE in Maine.

We LOVED that the house was down a small dirt road - not only did it ensure privacy (and some spectacular views hidden from the rest of the world) the road provided a great place to walk or bike to Clark Island Road, its own little treasure.

It’s true that this house may not be for everyone. If you want to be in a touristy town so you can shop for t-shirts and lighthouse models, this isn't the place for you. But if you want to come to a place where you can slow down, unplug and embrace the things that are really important when you are on vacation, come on down that little dirt road...a little piece of heaven is at the end.

Favorite Get-Away

  • 5 of 5
This will be my fifth year staying at this cottage, after spending a half dozen or so on Spruce Head Island. In addition to the spectacular views, what I enjoy most is the tranquility. While for some this location may seem too remote, for myself there is no place finer for that feeling of being away from it all, but within striking distance of civilization.

The expansive yard is terrific for the dog, as of course is the easy access to the water. I've had kayaking guests who could not believe how beautiful a spot it is, folks with children who loved the proximity of Port Clyde and its ferry to Monhegan, and many friends who simply enjoy the peace, quiet and charm.

This location is truly for the vacationer who wants to avoid the touristy busyness of a Camden or Bar Harbor. The cottage is more than adequate in its amenities, but it is not a five star hotel. The proprietors are on site and extremely helpful, but also very discreet in true Maine fashion. Solitude, privacy and beautiful vistas are what this cottage is all about.
