About The Owner

Welcome to our beautiful island and Fishbone!|

May it's beauty bring you a joyous visit and peaceful stay.

Your hosts, Al & Joan.

Al is know as 'surveyor Al.' He sailed from his home state of NC in the early 80's to become Best-Winters Surveyors on the island. His wife, Joan is an artist and Cranial Sacral Therapist. Her paintings are for sale at the Banzhof Gallery. For Fishbone guests the art throughout the cottage is offered at a special rate.

Gina is our gracious concierge. She is a wonderful guide for you on island. and 'can do' host. A school teacher and mother of twin girls, her husband and she reside in Fish Bay.

We all enjoy having you at Fishbone!

Take in the natural beauty of our island.

If we can be of further assistance you can reach us at 340-643-5452.

Fishbone is your second home in the islands! Please visit us again and be part of the family.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2002

Why The Owner chose Fish Bay

It has the privacy of the south shore. Al the surveyor saw the cottage as one of the first choice lots with panoramic views of the Caribbean and perched where the tropical breeze is captured. It is a traditional caribbean cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

Convenience to amenities, 2.5 miles to the town, ferry dining and entertainment in Cruz Bay, yet secluded enough as we say, to be clothing optional. :)

Guestbook comments from the manager

This first week has more than met our expectations!

We arrived in the dark of the night, wondering if we left the house would we ever find our way back? The first morning we woke to a beautiful rainbow and a view that took our breath away! We love the cottage so much that we have spent many lazy mornings relaxing after breakfast. Thanks for the yoga mats, have enjoyed that each day on the deck.

Week 1 highlights: dinner on the deck and star gazing, baby birds outside top deck, snorkeling Maho Bay, Salt Pond, Reef Bay Hike. Calypso Sail to Jost Van Dyke, ice cream at iScream, Dinner at Aqua Bistro.

Week 2: After two weeks we are relaxed, tan, and experiencing new beaches and adventures everyday! Tropical Storm Bertha has arrived and we are hunkered down as we get hit with 45 plus mile hour winds, raining sideways, quite a show. Gina took good care of us preparing the cottage. Week 2 highlights: rented a dinghy for full day and went to Watermelon Cay to snorkel. Fabulous, highly recommend it! Hiked back to spend more time at Watermelon Cay 2 days later. Spent a day on Bad Kitty. Dinners at house, Lime Inn, and drinks at Ocean Grill.

Week 3: It has been an amazing visit and we hope to return before too long. In our final days we enjoyed snorkeling at Princess Bay, Honeymoon Bay, and learning to paddleboard. We recommend the sushi at Caneel Bay, and ZoZo's for dinner.

Thank you Gina for your help. What a wonderful place to stay!

Very gracious

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked a stay here for a week. Unfortunately, he hurt his hip and we can no longer go. The owners gave us a FULL refund. They are kind and gracious! The house looks amazing, and we are looking forward to going in the future. We know that most owners wouldn't give a full refund, and we think it speaks highly of their character.

St. John's Hidden Gem!

  • 4 of 5

Fish Bone is an amazing property. It had everything we needed and wanted, plus more! The views are absolutely incredible, the grounds are full of beautiful fauna, and the hummingbirds were a treat to watch. The property was clean, comfortable, and well kept. The outdoor shower was a major bonus. The wrap around porches provided ample space to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views of Fish Bay. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to drive to Cruz Bay. The sense of seclusion made it worth the drive!! Make sure to head to Francis Bay, Pebble Beach, Gibney Beach, Honeymoon Bay, and do the Bad Kitty Excursion to BVI. Gina, the property manager, was extremely friendly and helpful and was a pleasure to work with. Rent a Jeep, explore the island, and stay at Fish Bone Cottage! We highly recommend this property and hope to return one day!

Delightful. A True Gem.

Fishbone was incredible. Very private area of the island and incredible views of the night sky and ocean. Also, having access to a grill made dinners a retreat from long days at the various beaches.

We'll be back in the future! And with a larger group once the second bedroom is completed! Thanks to Gina and Joan for a beautiful stay.

seen better days

  • 1 of 5

We have been coming to St. John for the last 12 years and this house was the biggest disappointment. This was once a cute little getaway cottage but has now seen better days. We spent 10 days here with broken screen windows, little to no phone service, stopped up sinks, and lots of mosquitos. On arrival, the house was filthy. Dead bugs all over, old hair on the headboards, and cobwebs everywhere. The property manager was unavailable (on vacation) and the owner doesn't live here. When finally contacted, the mgr. wanted us to use our vacation time to oversee the repairs on the house. She said that she didn't want to take time from her vacation to take care of it. It took 6 days of calling to get the bathroom sink working. Two of the screen windows had a 1 inch by 12 inch gap across the top of each window that were never fixed. We were living without being able to open the windows in a very tiny bedroom. The mosquitos in the bedroom and in the outdoor shower were murder. You have to light the pilot light on the stove, the oven, and the gas grill which is filthy. Bring your own toilet tissue. They only provided 1/4 roll between two bathrooms. The driveway entrance is on a one lane blind curve that you can't pull into in one move. The driveway itself is a narrow winding road on a steep hill and there is no turn around. Back in or back out on the same blind curve! Lots of fun! An attitude adjustment, change of mgmt., and new cleaning services have to be done before this once beautiful cottage is lost forever.

Owner's Response: Screens have all been taken down examined and/or repaired since this visit. They have all been put back on their frames for no further mosquito or pests to enter. During Hurricane Season we do tend to have many more mosquitos after storms. August has been an especially rainy month with many mosquitos, that can feel unbearable at times. Maintenance staff did repair clogged faucet during guests stay, entering property with guests permission which was arranged by management. Management was unfortunately off island at the time of these guests. A staff was in place for coverage of the villa in her absence. We are currently exploring new options for future coverage! In most cases manager meets and greets each guest, tours property on arrival, and is available 24/7 to all guest during their entire stay. She lives in close proximity to the villa and can usually on property within minutes when requested by guests. Our apologies to these guests. We at Fishbone aim to please and hope to assist in making their stay with us a wonderful experience with the hopes of all returning again in their future travels. Best regards, The Fishbone Family

Beautiful and relaxing as promised!!

Our first visit to St. John and first real vacation together, we were looking for someplace secluded and special to stay, and Fish Bone exceeded all of our expectations! The photos depicted the villa perfectly, the amenitites more than met our needs, and we cannot comment enough how wonderful the views and breezes are, along with the soothing sounds of the ocean and excellent stargazing at night. The outdoor shower was an awesome bonus, one which could not be experienced at a hotel! I especially loved the artwork (that I realized halfway thru the week were all painted by Joan, the owner), and was fortuntate to bring home a painting depicting the view of Fish Bay so that we can wake up and go there "in our minds." We rented a jeep on St. Thomas and brought the car barge over (Discount Car Rental, recommended for lower pricing and excellent service). Gina (manager and island contact for Fish Bone) was willing to answer questions in advance of our trip and helped to set up a private yoga session for us on Gibney Beach which kicked off our week. While on the island, we wanted to "do it all" which we did...Fish Bone is conveniently located (close to Cruz Bay but also to many other beaches, visit Francis Bay for excellent snorkeling and turtles). Cloud 9 is highly recommended for a day sail to BVI and Jost Van Dyke; Mixed Bag for sportfishing! Both were excellent adventures!! We were fortunate to catch some fresh fish which we brought home to grill, and the lettuce and herbs growing at the villa were a wonderfully fresh addition to our meal! Barb and Cary from Paradise Massage even came to the Fish Bone to give us a couple's massage on the porch in the shade...paradise for sure! And don't miss out on the drive to Coral Bay where you will see donkeys and goats roaming the island freely. Kayaking out of Cinnamon Bay allows you to find hidden beaches with many other island treasures. Overall a perfect trip and we definitely plan to return, hopefully soon!
