About Nicole

We're a family of five that have the great blessing to live in the Upper Peninsula. We started with our frequent visits to the area from our Detroit suburbs home, then eventually relocated to the peninsula full-time.

Nicole purchased this house in 2005

Why Nicole chose Manistique

We love the space and the privacy our vacation home offers. Plus, there's plenty of room for the kids to bring friends! I grew up in Escanaba, just over an hour from the home, so it really feels like I'm back to my roots. My kids have loved being a part of the culture on the Garden Peninsula. Our favorite summertime activities have always been the 4th of July Parade in Garden, Fayette State Park and beach, and Big Springs, just north of Indian Lake. In fact, we love it so much up here, that we've settled in the area permanently. The kids love our K - 12 Big Bay de Noc school system! And, living so close to our vacation home helps them learn the value of hard work -- we clean the cottage for guests ourselves! We always like to know how we've done -- it's our goal to deliver it to you as clean and fresh as we like to have it ourselves.

What makes this house unique

You've got the benefit of dealing directly with the owner, and having the owner nearby in case you need assistance. The Garden Peninsula is full of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. We hope you'll be able to enjoy the local culture and activities within 20 minutes or so of the cottage. And you'll be just ten minutes from the Garden Mini Mart -- and in our opinion the best meat ever! People come from great distance to purchase the fresh cuts from owners Nick and Patti Thennes. We love everything about the cottage -- the layout of the house, the privacy and nature of the woodsy vacation home area, and the amazing location on the beautiful Garden Peninsula.

Wonderful Get-away at Shining Shores Cottage

  • 5 of 5
We only stayed two nights at the cottage. Everything was as advertised, Very clean, warm, well maintained and quiet. Nichole provided all the basics that we needed. My wife and I enjoyed the quiet remote setting with a wonderful view of Lake Michigan. We would gladly stay there again.

Nice Getaway!

  • 4 of 5
The accommodations were quite acceptable. Comfortable beds with plenty of room for the 7 of us.Great open floor plan and a wonderful deck we used everyday. The fire pit area is spacious and well-groomed. Flashlights or walkway lighting between the house and the fire pit area would have made a nice touch (it get's quite dark when you're star-gazing).We did try to fare the rocky beach out front a few times but decided to drive into Manistique for a sand beach alternative. Clean as expected when we arrived. Nice place!

Wonderful property for family stay

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed our family's week long stay! This house was clean, well maintained and perfect for our plan to get away from the busy Metro Detroit area and enjoy the beauty of the U.P. The home was far enough into the "woods" to enjoy the sounds of Lake Michigan and all of the wildlife & stars at night. We were looking for an area that was not too touristy and we found it! :) The beach area in front is rocky and mucky, but we knew that coming in. We were here for the views and quiet. Yet we were within a 15 minute drive to the beautiful beaches and awesome Jack's market in Manistique for anything we needed to stock the house. We had our 3 children age ranges 3-10 who loved the second floor loft and bathroom as their own wonderland. We enjoyed the great porch and views every morning and evening. We had plenty of room for meals on the deck and liked having the grill readily available. The thoughtful owner had most amenities we city folks might have needed in the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom, and the wireless was greatly appreciated for the occasional times we needed to check out information online. This is a very peaceful, warm, & inviting place to retreat to after day trips to the various area attractions. Fayette State Park beach, the Rogers Beach on Lake Michigan & Pictured Rocks National Lake shore were among our most favorite. We lucked out as the weather was sunny & in the 80s and 90s all week :) Nicole was readily available if we needed anything extra during the week as well. We would recommend this location for anyone wanting a relaxing location with plenty of room to roam.

Quiet, Peaceful Lake View Retreat

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at Shining Shores was amazing. The home was a welcomed retreat from the every day rat race that is Chicago! We enjoyed sitting on the porch taking in the morning sun or watching the foxes in their den as the eagles flew by. The layout of the house was perfect for our family of 5 adults. (2 couples & 1 single). We each had our own floor. We'd love to visit again sometime soon!

Great Vacation House on Lake Michigan!

  • 5 of 5
Eight of us stayed in this house: 4 kids and 4 adults. The kids were aged 2 - 7. We all had a great time and loved the house. The firepit facing the lake was a nightly activity for us. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a house/cabin on Lake Michigan. Kid friendly too! No complaints, no regrets, just plenty of vacation memories!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed yourselves! Around the firepit is one of our favorite places to hang out too!

We Didn't Want To Leave

We Didn't Want To Leave
  • 5 of 5
We vacationed for a week with my family and my sister's family. 4 adults and 3 kids. We all had a fabulous time and no one wanted to leave.
The house had everything. Plenty of towels, toilet paper, and any other essentials you might need. The house was spotless, and very cozy. My husband and I took the loft room and bathroom, my sister and her hubby had the master bedroom, the kids took over the lower level. It was nice to retire to our separate levels when we needed a bit of quiet.
The sunrise in the morning was spectacular. I found myself waking up early just so I could watch it. I saw my first bald eagle while sitting my the fire pit early one morning and enjoying my coffee. It was awesome.
The house is off a secluded road and it's about a 20 minute drive to the main road and civilization but you feel like you are on your own planet. When we wanted quiet we stayed around the cabin... when we wanted excitement we drove to the pictured rocks, kitchitikipi, into town or to one of the beaches.
The beach at the property is a little mucky and rocky but we had read the reviews prior to our trip so we brought water shoes and were fine.
The kitchen had everything. My niece celebrated a birthday while we were there and I had all the tools to bake her cake.
We really loved it and when it came time to leave, none of us were ready. The minute we walked through those doors we all felt right at home. I can't think of a thing I would change. I hope to visit this place many times in the future. It was a perfect vacation for everyone.
