Enjoy a great getaway on this lovely, undeveloped island. Enjoy warm seas year-round and beautiful uncrowded beaches. Walk, swim, sunbathe on the beach. . . and watch the sun go down as you sip your Pina Colada! Our cottage is in a quiet cul-de-sac in the village of Esperanza. Fully furnished, simple, comfortable and clean with good kitchen amenities.

Phone, stove, microwave, refrigerator, blender, toaster, washing machine, coffee grinder, Radio/CD/tape player. All linen and towels are provided, including beach towels. Beach chairs, hammocks and coolers are available This is primarily a low-key 'get away from it all' location. Beaches, swimming and snorkeling are the main activities. Kayak and bike hire are available. World famous Bio-Bay nearby with amazing night-time swimming.

Two thirds of the island is given over to nature reserves. There are a few art galleries on the island, and a couple of small museums. There are many good places to eat. Vieques is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico about 20 minutes flight from San Juan. Our house is located in Esperanza, a small fishing village on the south side of the island. Restaurants, shops and sea front all within five minutes walk. Closest beaches five minutes walk.

Casa Violeta was exactly as advertised: simple, comfortable, clean, relaxing. The beds & living room furniture are comfortable, the kitchen well enough equipped (if you want to bother to cook during your vacation). The best place in the house is the big wrap-around porch, where you can eat meals, enjoy cooling breezes, nap (or read a good book) in the hammocks.
How about this: Wake up to the sound of the rooster next-door and turn on the coffee machine; stroll half a block to Dulce de Esperanza bakery for a pastry, or get some fragrant, hot pan de aqua, the local bread, and bring it back to the house to toast. Tomorrow if you have the ambition, you can walk the extra block to Belly Buttons for eggs-over or French Toast. After breakfast, walk to Sun Bay beach and sit under a palm or sea-grape and watch the sun climb the sky until it's time to head to the Malecon for a burger and a cold Medalla at Duffy's. Back to Casa Violeta for a nap in the porch hammock before you hit happy hour at Bananas. Dinner at Tradewinds (I recommend the Thai pasta with shrimp...) and a night cap back at Duffy's where you can rub elbows with all the local characters. Welcome to Margaritaville. Before you leave, you really ought to exert yourself (just a little) to get out to the great beaches at the east and west ends of the island, where you'll never have to fight crowds for a great spot, and be sure to book a nighttime tour of the bioluminescent bay, which will amaze you; there's not another one in the world as bright or as accessible. If that's your idea of a great getaway, then Esperanza, Vieques is for you. If you need a golf course, casino, TV, or designer brand-name shopping, go somewhere else and leave Vieques to those of us who fondly remember the Caribbean of old.
