POST AND BEAM HOME ON ISLAND ON WEST RIVER - CLOSE TO STRATTON

Jamaica House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 11-13)

This home is very unique and special to me. I am a builder from Martha's Vineyard and put my heart, soul and experience into this one of a kind post and beam house. It sits on a private island on the West River that you access by going over a covered bridge. There are only two other homes on the island (island is over 100 acres). The house is 2800 square feet and the bedrooms range from 200 to 250 square feet. Each room has special touches down to the hand made tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms and branches in the railing systems. The kids bunk bed system is hand crafted with logs and branches and sports an elevated walkway, trap door and rope ladder. The massive 30 foot high interior fireplace is fashioned after a Lew French design and the spiral staircase to the loft has to be seen to be appreciated. I sit for hours listening to the river outside as it is only 30 feet from the house. Some days we put on our snow shoes and explore the island. We have just completed an around the island trail system that shows off its beauty. My girls love looking for animal tracks. We have deer and beaver on the island. I have seen lynx tracks but have never seen one.

This is not really a rental property - this is my dream house. It is 10 miles from Stratton Mountain (about a 15-20 minute ride to the mountain) which is a great ski and snowboard area in the winter and golfing community in the summer. Stratton Mountain is one of the best run mountains I have ever been to. Their customer service is unmatched in Vermont - They give out tissues at the chair lifts on really cold days. The people that work at the mountain truly want you to have a good skiing experience. They are not just punching a clock. The ski school is first rate and my 6 year old daughter can already ski from the top of the mountain and guides me through some of the easier forest trails. Manchester is about 30 miles away and is home to every outlet store you would want to shop in.......... I could go on forever. Take a look at the pictures and contact me if you want to see more.

Lovely house in fabulous setting

  • 5 of 5
Two families stayed in this house for MLK weekend. There were 8 of us but the house could have easily accommodated more. The house is absolutely incredible. New built, charming, clean, tons of windows letting in sunlight. It is very upbeat and bright, yet cozy at the same time. Although it is spacious, it was still easy to keep an eye on the children as they loved hanging out in the loft complete with a hammock. The house is very clean, with spacious bedrooms and spotless bathrooms.
The location of the house is also worth noting. It is on a private island that is close to everything yet "away from it all" as there are only three homes on the island. The rushing river by the house is soothing and the perfect "white noise" for sleeping at night.

Rob is very easy to work with and was very considerate. Our only issue is that he doesn't rent it out often enough =( My kids are already asking about when they can return.

We went to Stratton which was a quick drive. Highly recommend the house for the location, house itself, and the lovely setting!

Celebrating Mom's 75th birthday and the New Year

Celebrating Mom's 75th birthday and the New Year
  • 5 of 5
This home is one of a kind! We arrived right after Christmas for 5 days of skiing, relaxing, and celebrating my mom's 75th birthday (yes, she still skis!) with our family. Everyone loved the house -and the location is also spectacular with complete privacy and beautiful views of the river from almost every window. It met, and exceeded the owners description, and it is easy to see why he is attached to this property. The kitchen is very well equipped (we cooked dinner in most nights), the bathroom floors have radiant heating, plenty on towels, extra blankets, games, and special details throughout. A real gem! The owner was responsive and easy to work with. He was there when we arrived, which I appreciated since he was able to quickly walk us through the house and point out a few details, then he was on his way.

Owner's Response: As always I am glad that everyone enjoyed my dream home, but a little jealous that I left and they arrived the day that 20+ inches of powder dumped on Stratton. The island looks magical with snow on the river and animal tracks dotting the forest. I am just sorry they did not see the moose that visited our house the week before they arrived.

Extended family reunion

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at the Kagan River Ranch exceeded my family's vacation expectations! The house and property were as described in the owner's write-up. What was NOT included in the description, however, was the feeling of peace and serenity you get from being right on the river. Inside or outside the house, the gurgling sound of the river soothes your soul. We loved the beds, beautiful woodwork throughout the house, the huge dining table, the kitchen with everything you could need, the firepit, and the feeling of being in a remote area while actually being not too far from anywhere. While you're there, definitively check out the Jamaica State Park, Hamilton Falls, and the Dam Diner.

Owner's Response: Wow - you should write ad copy for our house. I am always glad that people enjoy our house as much as we do. My wife is especially happy that you appreciated and took advantage of our well stocked kitchen as she is a big time cook. I wish we could be up there all the time, but since we can not it is comforting that others can take advantage of the beauty of our dream house and our beautiful island in the middle of the West River.

Wonderful stay in Vermont

  • 5 of 5
My family and some close friends stayed in this beautiful home over the New Years Eve weekend. There were 12 of us in all and the house accommodated us perfectly. This group of families has been renting homes in VT for nearly 10 years and, I'd have to say, this home may well be our new favorite. It's essentially brand new with every amenity you could wish for. What truly sets it apart, however, is the setting. The sense of privacy and seclusion coupled with an unparallelled view of a shallow, rushing river just a few yards from the back deck make this home extremely unique.

While the weather and the snow didn't necessarily cooperate this time around, the house, it's setting and it's incredible river view made for a peaceful and serene holiday.

I highly recommend this home to anyone seeking a fresh, comfortable home in a beautiful setting. If you plan on skiing, the home is about 20 minutes from the Stratton base lodge. It's also close to the town of Jamaica which was quite convenient for quick, last minute needs.

The owner was also readily available to answer any questions during our stay.

Do yourselves a favor and put this home near the top of your list. You will not be disappointed.

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you had a great vacation. I want everyone to enjoy the house as much as I do. It really is a special spot. I never want to leave. The snow is really the only thing I have no control over but I am glad you were able to still have a fun and a memorable time.

Charming House in a Idyllic Setting

  • 5 of 5
Our family had a fantastic time staying in this charming house in the woods. The private location and the breathtaking view of the river from the house made our week one of the most relaxing family vacations ever. The kids had a great time exploring on the island before coming in to sit in front of the massive fireplace and the adults could not stop talking about the view from the back of the house (which is all glass)

The house is an easy drive to both Stratton and Magic Mt and we would recomend either to anyone who is looking to ski. Stratton is bigger, more commercial and definetly busier of the two but has great skiing. Magic is a throwback to old time NE skiing and has outstanding terrain as long there is natural snow. Be prepared to wait in lines at Stratton and be prepared to freeze on the long old lift at MAgic.

The description of the house is accurate but does not do it justice. The builder/owner seems to be a real quirky guy who put his heart and sole into the place and it shows in the interstesting wordwork...like the kids bunkbed room that is more like a tree fort. The place was clean, the appliances and everything else was new and almost looked unused. The house is easily big enough for two familys to share and the loft provides a place for the kids to have to themselves.

The town of Jamaica is a 2 minute car ride away where you can find a general store that has everything you will need including great baked goods. Not to far away is the Dam Diner which is the epitome of small town Vermont charm...great home cooked food...and not one fork, spoon chair, table etc. match any other. If you want to explore, Manchester is about 35 minutes away where you will find shopping and great places to eat.

I would recomend this house to anyone.

Owner's Response: I am always glad when a tenant enjoys our house as much as we do. And as the builder I love when people appreciate my work. Although, I would call myself artsy and not quirky. I did build most of the house but the credit for the beautiful stairway, railing system and bunk bed room has to go to a local carpenter named shane Lewis - someday he will be famous for his original and masterful use of raw lumber and branches. On another note, I have never been to magic mountain or the dam diner but now that I know about them I will check them out.

Thanksgiving to remember

  • 5 of 5
This is our family's second time renting this lovely house. Our Thanksgiving holiday was very memorable and all 12 of us and our feast of food fit around the beautiful hand made dining room table which was nice. We feel extremely fortunate to have found such a special place to which we could bring our family to celebrate Thanksgiving. The views of the river from the house are spectacular, the new trail the owner created on the property is a joy to walk on and the picturesque covered bridge you take to get on the private island looks like it just got a face lift. The only down sides to this vacation was that there was no snow due to the warm weather this Fall and now I want to redo some of my house to incorporate some of the details of this incredible house. Thanks Rob and thanks again for the bottle of wine - We love Pinot noir!!!!

Owner's Response: I am glad that you enjoyed our house enough to come back a second time and use it for such a special occasion as Thanksgiving. The dining room table is an incredible piece (of art) and where we spend a lot of our time gathered around in the great room. I am happy that you got a chance to take a walk on my new trail (it was a labor of love) and yes the covered bridge has been updated. I put sides and cut through openings on the bridge so that it looks nicer but travelers can still see the river as they pass over the bridge (kind of the opposite of the true purpose of a covered bridges which were constructed to keep the horses from seeing the river and getting spooked). I will pass on the thanks to my wife who suggested we leave a good bottle of wine to our repeat customers.
