About John Brendler
My wife and I live in Swarthmore, Pa. We've been married for 43 years and have 3 children (39, 35, 30 all of whom are married and leading interesting lives. I am a family and couples therapist and own a holistic healing center and my wife is recently retired from her Speech Therapy position in a hospital. My wife grew up in Gary, Indiana and I grew up in Riverdale, NY and we met in graduate school at Middlebury College in 1969 where we received our Masters Degree in French literature and language at the Sorbonne. Our home is open all year and is an extension of us as a family.
John Brendler purchased this house in 2000
Why John Brendler chose West Tisbury
Our first trip to the Vineyard reminded us so much of the charm and warmth of Brittany in France that we were drawn to it instantly. Then in the late 90s we were faced with a medical crisis that prompted us to not wait any longer to look for a second home. We were clear that we would go to the Vineyard and find a home there that would be a good fit for us and our children. We set up a visit to see 10 houses one weekend and as we drove down the driveway from Great Plains Rd. to what is now our house we fell in love with the house. It was the charm of the house, its spaciousness, the country feeling, the wooded lot, the privacy, the closeness to a bike path cutting through a National Forest. Inside the four fireplaces, the wide panels on the kitchen floor, the back patio with a fireplace by the garden added to the beauty of it. We love it.
What makes this house unique
The four fireplaces are a big hit. We've designed it from antique shops and brought attractive and comfortable furniture that has been in the family for many years. Highlights: a new master bedroom with a full bathroom set off a deck on the 2nd floor, a patio that gives a sense of privacy amidst lots of trees and a large lawn, a large living room with lots of light and down sofa and wing chairs, and a family room with great books we've collected throughout our life together and from our families.
