We really enjoyed our stay at this property during a long weekend family getaway. We were surprised at how spacious this cottage actually was. Plenty of room for two adults and two teenagers to move around in and not feel cramped. Large family room with a big flat screen TV on the wall and plenty of comfy seating. I'm sure the big, wood-burning fireplace in this room is fantastic in the winter. Sunroom area right in the center of the house was really nice, especially in the morning, bringing in lots of natural light. Big kitchen with everything needed to prepare and enjoy meals. An additional light above the stove area would be nice though, as it seemed a bit dark there. The cottage was mostly clean, though my wife noticed cobwebs in several places, and all of the windows in the house are probably ready for replacement. A few were very hard to open. Since the weather was perfect, we spent a lot of time out on the massive wooden deck, as well as around the large fire pit at night. LOTS of firewood stacked around the property so no need to buy any locally. This cottage is very peaceful and secluded in the woods, though it does sit above a road that can get be quite busy at times, considering it is down the road from one of the three Shanty Creek Resort lodges. Being in the woods, we had a few deer walk right near the fire pit a few times, which the kids loved. This was our first time to the Northern Michigan/Traverse City region, so we did not realize how much of a drive it is over to Traverse City itself, and even further to the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. They are definitely all-day trips. The town of Bellaire, which the Shanty Creek Resort sits in, has few dining options so be prepared to wait, especially during the dinner hours. I do highly recommend dining at The Pelican's Nest restaurant at The Chief golf course down the road. Probably our best meals during our stay. Use of the private Beach Club nearby was VERY nice. Right on Lake Bellaire with a beach, sand volleyball court, shuffleboard, etc. If you are looking for a quiet, secluded, comfy cabin in the Northern Michigan woods, this should be perfect.
Charming, comfortable, conveniently located cottage in the pines at Shanty Creek.
Stayed here with a friend and recommend it highly for family / friend gatherings, ski / golf outings and girlfriend getaways.
Owner was accommodating and easy to deal with.
Perfect spot for exploring beautiful northern Michigan.
Would go back in a heartbeat.
He has let the maintenance slip. There were many bugs. We dubbed them the great northern cockroach. There was rat poisen under the head of the bed. I was quite surprised to look there and see it 3 feet from my head when I sleep. I had to move lightbulbs around to get enough that worked where we needed them. Cable tv is not up-to-date. Could not get basic programs. Deck, bar-b-q, skylight all need sweeping off and cleaning. Fridge was gross. Overall the place just felt dirty. Othewise everything was fine.
What an incredible place for the price and the owner is great to work with, helped me out with last minute reservation on Thursday for the open weekend Friday and Saturday, only wish I could have enjoyed the cottage more but got there late Friday night and was in Traverse City all day Sat (only about 30 min away) but location is so close to downtown Bellaire ,Torch Lake, and many golf courses which I think for my next guys golf trip of 8 we're going to stay and play here.
Place was nice and clean. Although only 3 of us, plenty of room. If you don't mind sharing the second bedroom, would have been room for more. Back patio is big, many shade trees, very quiet. Sitting room with all sky lights helps brighten the place.
We had four adults and four children in the cottage for a long weekend. It was within walking distance of skiiing and the pool. The house was great - the porch was great to watch the kids play in the yard. There was lots of firewood stacked up and we used the fireplace all weekend. The kitchen was great for our large family and there was plenty of room for everyone. It was very clean and had extra towels and toiletries in the closet. The pictures don't do this place justice - very nice. We will be back again next winter.
