Old Admiralty House (The Garden Flat) provides deluxe self catering accommodation in a stunning location in St Andrews, the ‘home of golf’. Situated on a cliff top vista overlooking the sea with the Harbour to the East and the Old Castle to the West, the situation could not be more dramatic.
We have recently acquired the Garden Flat and it has undergone a major refurbishment. It now provides provide top quality accommodation in an ideal location.
The garden flat has three bedrooms, two of which are en-suite and in addition there is a bathroom with shower over. The bedrooms can be double or twin or a mix of both to suit the party that you are bringing. The lounge with views to the garden is fitted with comfy furniture, television and hi-fi and the Master Bedroom has direct access to the South facing conservatory/sun room which can also be accessed from the garden.
Catering for up to six people, the garden flat is the downstairs half of one big house and will therefore cater for up to 12 people using both apartments. It is an ideal well-being holiday destination for those seeking to explore the East Neuk of Fife or laze on the award winning beaches. St Andrews is the Home of Golf and Old Admiralty House is a ten minute walk from the 1st tee of the Old Course, arguably the most famous and sought after golfing venue in the world.

My father was the Caterpiller Dealer in Calcutta India and so I was born in that far off country. The bulk of my career has been as a Dealer Principal within the Motor Trade in Scotland from which I retired in 2010. We purchased the Upper flat in 2007 and the Garden flat in 2010 which gave us the whole of the property. With my background in customer service we try hard to satisfy the requirements of our guests and pay particular attention to the detail that will make their stay something special to remember.
The Owner purchased this apartment in 2010
My home town was Dundee and with an Aunt who lived in St Andrews I was introduced to the game of golf at an early age. I used to come over the water on a regular basis to play the great Links and have always regarded it as a unique venue with its own special character. When the opportunity arose then what better place to acquire a piece of history in this very historic town?!
Old Admiralty House is one of the relatively few privately owned properties that has uninterupted views of the sea. It is a short walk to both the golf courses and the centre of the town. However although close to the bustling centre with all the pubs, shops and restaurants it is a quiet haven being situated at the end of a cull-de-sac with no through traffic. You wake up to the sound of the sea and the call of the seabirds and couldn't be furthar away from all the pressure of modern life. It truly is a place you can recharge the batteries!
The flat is very well equipped and in a great location. It was perfect for three couples as each couple had their own modern bathroom. We loved having drinks in the garden and also in the garden room when it got chilly. The fireplace was great on cooler evenings. We walked to shops, attractions and golf. Drew and Susan are excellent hosts with attention to every detail. They were quick to answer any questions. We loved the fresh flowers and wine too.
An excellent vacation rental. We would love to go back.
Not a single negative thing to say about the house - not one!
(Some of the taxi drivers are a little confused about the address, so make sure to tell them to take a right at the end of North Castle Street; they tend to naturally take a left. The taxi drivers are punctual and friendly!)
We were met at the door by Drew, which I will admit was a first in my VRBO experiences; the keys are usually left with a doorman or in a lockbox. Receiving such a personal touch from the very beginning set the tone for the rest of our stay. Drew showed us around the house, where specific items were located, how to set the temperature, and talked with us about places to go. Plenty of local "what to do" brochures are on the entry table for guests. And fresh cut roses in the kitchen! Such a simple gesture, yet one that said a huge "Welcome".
Old Admiralty House is warm and inviting, with plenty of room for everyone. Truly, it was a home away from home for us. This ground floor flat has one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever seen. It was nice to sit in the sunroom in the mornings with a cup of coffee and just look at all the colours, after a restful night's sleep on the most comfortable beds. The sunrises / sunsets looking out from the kitchen window were simply serene. If it is a rainy day, and you want to curl up with a good book, there are plenty of selections at your fingertips.
The location is perfect!! You truly do not need to rent a car, unless you are embarking on a lot of day trips. A 10 minute stroll to the end of The Scores will put you at the heart of Golf Mecca - The Old Course. On your way, you will pass the ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral and St. Andrews College. Nobody is in a hurry and everyone you pass says good morning or hello. Two blocks up from the house is Market Street, where you will find pubs, restaurants, Starbucks, Costa, Tesco...everything you could possibly need to set up your pantry/refrigerator.
While we did not need to contact Drew about anything during our one week stay, I certainly felt that, should the need arise, everything would be handled promptly and completely. Corresponding with Drew between making the deposit and the actual arrival date was quick, easy, and questions always answered fully.
By far, one of the most positive VRBO experiences we've ever had. I would highly recommend, without hesitation, Old Admiralty House to anyone planning on visiting St. Andrews!!
We stayed in the Old Admiralty - Garden Flat - during the week our son graduated from St. Andrews. Drew met us when we arrived and made sure all was well. The garden is beautiful and the view of the sea and the castle is awesome. You are convenient to all shops and the University. Graduation was just around the corner at Younger Hall. The kitchen is very large and well equiped. We were able to entertain our son's friends and their parents just like we were at home. The sun porch off of the back bedroom is warm and inviting. It was very popular with everyone. We loved every minute we were in St. Andrews and definitely plan to come back.
This has got to be the absolutely best rental in St. Andrews. It's spacious, incredibly well appointed, the views are unbelievable. Kitchen has everything you need. The garden is delightful (only available with the lower flat). Walking distance to everywhere. Across the street are the ruins of the castle and less than a minutes' walk from the old cathedral. Views of the ocean are breath taking. St. Andrews University main campus is just a few minutes away as is shopping, grocery stores, pubs and the entrance to the Old Course. The shoppers can take the car and the golfers can easily walk to the courses. Drew is the perfect host. All e-mails are answered promptly, PayPal transactions smooth as silk. You need not look further.
