Photos and Description of the Richmond & Kew vacation chalet rental
Chalet, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Ripple is a newly built, architect designed chalet brought all the way from the forests of Transylvania! Set on the tidal reach of the River Thames on Eel Pie Island at Twickenham, Ripple combines comfort with style. Roof lights make it light and bright with its high open eaved ceiling, glass gables and spacious living and kitchen area - open the glass doors on to the decking, watch the boats go by and enjoy the pretty landscaped garden. The interior is entirely wood-lined with wooden floors, all beautifully painted and after a busy day sightseeing in London, this is just the place to return to rest and relax.

Ripple has a child safe garden with railings at the waters edge, a BBQ and garden gazebo. Lots of DVDs, toys and books for children and a wonderful playground about 10 minutes walk away. The master bedroom has an en suite shower, wash basin and W.C.; the twin bedroom has 'zip and link' beds so the two single beds can be converted into a queen sized bed if required. Bunk beds (one on top of the other) in the 3rd bedroom are full sized for adults or children. All the beds are ready and made up for your arrival including towels. There is a washer/dryer in the family bathroom (washing powder supplied), walk-in-shower, wash basin and W.C.: soaps and toilet rolls for your arrival. The dining table in the living area seats 8 and the kitchen is well equipped for your cooking requirements with all new appliances: dishwasher (powder supplied)hob, oven, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer, blender...all brand new! We make sure the cupboards are stocked with basic foods - instant coffee, tea, sugar, oil, salt and pepper - and some fresh food for your arrival. 2 dark grey sofas allow you to relax and watch the flat screen TV in comfort or view the river and birdlife. Free high speed internet access is available.

Eel Pie Island is situated in the middle of the Thames at Twickenham, West London. It was given its name in the 16th century for supplying King Henry VIII with eel pies! It became famous again in the 1960's when various British rock bands, including the Rolling Stones and The Who, performed at a dance hall which has since been demolished. This small, car-free island with its friendly village atmosphere, has approximately 35 dwellings, 3 working boatyards, a rowing club, yacht club, a variety of artists studios and a number of houseboats. Access is via a footbridge from Twickenham and Ripple is 30 yards from the bridge.

Twickenham High Street, with its full range of shops, is 200 yards from the island's footbridge. Explore the narrow, old English lanes along by the river, past the medieval St Mary's Church and the Mary Wallace Theatre owned and run by the Richmond Shakespeare Society. Book yourself a table at the 17th century White Swan Pub where the food and beer are excellent. Within easy walking distance you can reach the famous Twickenham Rugby Stadium, the historic houses of Marble Hill and Ham House and a scenic towpath walk takes you to Richmond-upon -Thames where the Theatre often presents plays before they are shown in London's West End.

Twickenham British Rail Station is an 8 minute walk away and a frequent train service takes you to London Waterloo in 20 minutes. Heathrow Airport is a 25 minute taxi ride and can be reached by public transport. Gatwick Airport can also be easily reached by train. We would be happy to advise you on the details of these journeys. You do not need to hire a car to enjoy this part of west London because travel links are excellent but if you do choose to hire a car there is public carparking along Twickenham riverside opposite Ripple (altogether a 3 minute walk from car to Ripple). There are no designated parking places but there's not a problem with parking and permits are available from us if you need them. Within a 15 minute drive are Hampton Court (Henry VIII's Palace), Richmond Park (Henry's hunting ground), The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, and Sandown Race Course at Esher.

We have had a holiday rental home on the site of Ripple for 17 years- we live a 20 minute drive away- and 3 years ago (2010) completed the building of a brand new Ripple to our design. Our children have grown up with the river and the eccentricities of island life and we love the peace and quiet of this beautiful part of London. We have found that our visitors have enjoyed the added adventure of staying on an island whilst visiting London.

'He who is tired of London is tired of life' Samuel Johnson 1777. Come and stay at Ripple and discover the delights of London!

About The Owner

We have two sons aged 22 and 17 and we have spent many happy weekends and holidays on Eel Pie Island while the children were growing up. It was here that they learnt to row and sail and we as a family became part of the island community enjoying raft races, island BBQs and many a pirate party for our children's birthdays. We are both self employed and Ripple has been a peaceful haven for us where we have shared so many happy memories with friends, neighbors and family. Come and be part of the 'Ripple' experience!

The Owner purchased this chalet in 1996
Why The Owner chose Richmond & Kew

For 28 years we have lived in west London with a view of the River Thames, and our love of boats and the water led us 17 years ago, to buy 'Ripple', our holiday home on Eel Pie Island, just 20 minutes drive away from where we live. We discovered the island on one of our boating adventures, saw a house for sale, and were captivated by the idea of holidaying in a wooden chalet off shore, in London! We found that crossing the bridge helped transport us to a place of rest and refreshment that was distinctive from our 'mainland' home. Over the years we have kept a variety of boats on our pontoon - sailing, motor, rowing - and have many great memories of boating adventures. Ask our boys how one of our engines came to be on the river bed!!

What makes this chalet unique

London - capital city of England and a great base for seeing the rest of Britain and Europe. Ripple, a unique holiday home in a beautiful part of London right on the River Thames. Staying on Eel Pie Island gives you peace and quiet, you'll be woken by birdsong and not airplanes, and you can easily access central London with the excellent travel links. Twickenham is on the British Rail network (fast train to Waterloo), Richmond (2 miles away) is on the District Line on the Tube, and Heathrow and Gatwick Airports are within easy reach by train or taxi. This part of London is steeped in history with many of its own amazing tourist attractions on the doorstep (Royal Palaces, Botanical Gardens, historic houses..) which enables you to combine visiting all the usual sights of central London while living in a vibrant, local community. What our visitors have said: S.Africa: 'We had an excellent visit to London. this is a lovely setting in contrast to busy London. A good place to come back to at the end of a hectic day of sight-seeing' New Hampshire, USA : 'Wonderful, perfect, lovely, walk across the bridge and you're in a different world! Feels like a home away from home' Seattle: 'We feel so fortunate to have based our first trip to London at Ripple. The sights in the City were fabulous. The trains, tube and buses worked well. But maybe best of all was returning home to Eel Pie Island each evening...' Ontario:'Very much enjoyed the history, heat and heavenly breezes of this hospitable neighborhood' Australia:'We can't wait to come again and will tell all our friends that you can have a relaxing family holiday with 3 children in London!'

A not-to-be-missed experience

I grew up in England and have visited frequently since emigrating fifty years ago. Usually we stay with relatives, but this time we came for a wedding in SW London and needed accommodation not far away. Ripple was perfect. Not only is it charming, comfortable, well-equipped and convenient to transportation, but the novel experience of living on an island in the river Thames is simply not to be missed. Eel Pie is quiet, quirky and cute, with a pleasant community (Twickenham) close at hand and the attractions of London not far away. Sarah, the owner, is a delight to deal with, and has thought of everything to make visitors feel welcome and at home in her family's lovely cottage.

Excellent home and first trip to London with children!

For our family, Ripple was a home away from home. We spent two weeks there while touring London, Bath and Brighton, and wished for a third week! The children (7, 10, 12), and my husband and I were really comfortable overall. We shopped at the local grocery, Waitrose, also at the butcher and farmer's market, which saved a load of money. We really enjoyed relaxing in the evenings with some good food and wine after a long day of sightseeing. One of our favorite things was living on the river! We absolutely loved watching the tide, bird life and boaters - so did the kids. Crossing the footbridge was a treat every time. Ripple is only a few stops by train to central London, though you wouldn't know it by the peaceful surroundings. We bought daily travel cards to Waterloo and the Friends and Family card recommended by a previous reviewer. If you stay here, don't overlook the Thames riverwalk - we walked to Richmond one day, to Ham House via ferry another day and to the park multiple times. It's really a beautiful area with lots of history very close by. I was sad to leave, but feel blessed to have experienced Ripple firsthand and the Twickenham/Richmond area. We really hope to return!

Amazing Place To Stay

We brought a family of six ages 16 to 67 to London for 14 days.
Our stay at Ripple was such a blessing! We arrived tired a bit early on the check in day, but Sarah was so wonderfully accomodating! She let us leave our luggage and take off while she finished preparing the house. When we returned from our long first day, we were greeted with scones, tea, wine and a warm, relaxing environment. The beds were very comfortable and the house was peaceful. With such a huge age range in our party, Ripple offered omething for everyone!
The area is perfect for getting to all the major sights. Hampton Palace, Kew Gardens and Windsor Palace were just a short train ride away! The footbridge offers lovely views, plenty of geese and swans and the occasional rowing team! Quite fun! It was chilly but the heat and insulation in the house is amazing. We turned it on upon arriving in the evenings and off before bed nd tyed toasty warm all night! We appreciated the automatic garden lights at night.
The local people are friendly and helpful, what a joy! The back garden is tranquil and the perfect place to unwind with a cup of tea. Sarah's warmth and friendliness made this trip easy and enjoyable. She was lovely to deal with when our bank couldn't get a wire transfer correct and patient with all of our questions.
We highly recommend getting a London Pass with Travel Card. We saved quite a bit of money and literally used the travel cards to the point of wearing them out. So much to see and do around London. We did not get it all in, but we know where we will be stying when we return! There is simply no better place than Ripple!
Sarah's informative notebook was very helpful when my son-in-law felt ill. He easily found a doctor and was very impressed with the courtesy and care he was given.
I feel like I am rambling on, but this house andthis island is so beautiful and amazing! Thank you Sarah and family for sharing it! You made our dream trip the perfect reality!

Perfect place for a 10 day family vacation to London! Quiet, very comfortable, great neighborhood

Our family of four (including two girls, ages 7 and 9) traveled to London for 10 days in April and stayed the entire time at Ripple. The house was amazing, with everything you could need or want for an extended stay. The beds and sofas were very comfortable, and the place was very quiet at night. It was great having a laundry machine, and the kitchen was very well outfitted. We used the wireless all the time, and the laptop and printer was very handy for printing out tickets. Sarah is an awesome host!

Transportation- We took:
• Twickenham Green Car (020 88941057) from and to Heathrow, £29 each way, cash only, extremely punctual
• Southwest Trains into Waterloo (6-8 leave every hour, 23-41 minute ride) almost every day. If you buy a Friends and Family Railcard £28, you get ? off all fares for a year. Each day we bought 4 travelcards totaling ~£16, which includes rail and Tube. Twickenham station is ~8 minute walk. Leave after 9:30 to avoid punitive pricing
• Buses to and from Kew Gardens and Hampton Court, £1.35 each adult each way, under-11 kids free. Buy Oyster card at news agents- £5 deposit and any unused amount is refunded when you turn it in at a tube station

Twickenham- Very close by are:
• Very good groceries at Waitrose (mainstream), Marks & Spencer (upscale), and Cousins (fruit/veggie guys)
• Very nice Saturday farmers market
• Great pubs (recommend The Bear and Eel Pie Pub) and restaurants (recommend Osteria Pulchinella, Shanghai Village, Patisserie Valerie, and Café Bellisimo)
• CarPhoneWarehouse to get a cheap GSM phone (£5) and £10 pre-paid SIM card

Sightseeing- Notable beyond the usual sights:
• Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew are really great but require a bus transfer
• Sir John Soane’s museum was really interesting to us, and our girls even got to take a class there (check their website and register ahead of time)
• Borough Market (London Bridge tube stop) for acres of good, interesting foods
• Greenwich visitor center is good for kids, and there is a foot tunnel all the way under the Thames the kids liked- access stairs are near the Cutty Sark but not obvious
• Kensington Palace got mixed reviews due avant garde presentation
• Buy a membership to Historic Royal Palaces online and get into Hampton Court, Kew Palace (but not the gardens), Kensington, and Tower of London free, with other benefits

Ripple is a Little Piece of Heaven. Best VRBO Rental We've Ever Stayed In!

My husband, three children(11, 9, and 4), and I stayed at Ripple for 5 nights at the beginning and end of our journey to Paris, and although Paris was of course spectacular, our fondest memory of this trip is without a doubt Ripple, Eel Pie Island, and Twickenham. We have rented many VRBO properties over the years and Ripple is by far the very BEST of them all. I was a bit concerned about planning a winter trip to London, but it turned out to be one of the loveliest times of the year to visit. During our first weekend there, we were able to enjoy the turning on of the Christmas lights on Church Street, a lovely little pedestrian street lined with precious shops and restaurants. The candy shop lined with glass jars from floor to ceiling full of all kinds of candy imaginable was the kids' favorite. The second weekend we were there, we were lucky enough to enjoy the Winter Open Studios on Eel Pie Island where artists open up their studios and sell their art to the visiting public. Not to be missed! The island and the studios are one of the most wonderful places I've ever visited. Dreamy and lush with foliage, paths leading to storybook cottages, and funky art studios that offer glimpses into the creative minds that work there. The island is full of history and music aficionados will really enjoy reading about the jazz and rock that was enjoyed here in the past. Check out the book Eel Pie Island by Dan Van Der Vat before you come to get a real sense of the wonder of this place. As wonderful as is the location, Ripple the house is just as fabulous! Warm and cozy(December and we didn't even need to turn on the heat it's so well insulated), light from floor to ceiling(great windows that swing open from the top or side, skylights galore, sliding glass doors to open up the entire living area to the deck, garden, and river), and the most well equipped rental we've ever stayed in. The master bed was more comfy than my own at home! Love that mattress! Renting directly from the owner is so much more satisfying than renting from a management company. Sarah's welcoming presentation of scones with a little British flag and tea, milk and butter in the fridge, spices, sugar, coffee, etc. made for a very warm greeting. It just doesn't get any better than this! Next time we head across the pond, it will be with Ripple as our main destination! I miss it already, can't wait to return, and am eagerly awaiting my own copy of Eel Pie Island to satisfy me until then.
