FABULOUS RIVERSIDE BOATHOUSE ON THE RIVER THAMES IN LONDON

Richmond & Kew Chalet Rental Photos and Description

Boathouse/Chalet, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Ripple is a newly built, architect designed house brought all the way from the forests of Transylvania! Set on the tidal reach of the River Thames on Eel Pie Island at Twickenham, Ripple combines comfort with style. Roof lights make it light and bright with its high open eaved ceiling, glass gables and spacious living and kitchen area - open the glass doors on to the decking, watch the boats go by and enjoy the pretty landscaped garden. The interior is entirely wood-lined with wooden floors, all beautifully painted and after a busy day sightseeing in London, this is just the place to return to rest and relax.

Ripple has a child safe garden with railings at the waters edge, a BBQ and garden gazebo. Lots of DVDs, toys and books for children and a wonderful playground about 10 minutes walk away. The master bedroom has an en suite shower, wash basin and W.C.; the twin bedroom has 'zip and link' beds so the two single beds can be converted into a queen sized bed if required. Bunk beds (one on top of the other) in the 3rd bedroom are full sized for adults or children. All the beds are ready and made up for your arrival including towels. There is a washer/dryer in the family bathroom (washing powder supplied), walk-in-shower, wash basin and W.C.: soaps and toilet rolls for your arrival. The dining table in the living area seats 8 and the kitchen is well equipped for your cooking requirements with all new appliances: dishwasher (powder supplied)hob, oven, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer, blender...all brand new! We make sure the cupboards are stocked with basic foods - instant coffee, tea, sugar, oil, salt and pepper - and some fresh food for your arrival. 2 dark grey sofas allow you to relax and watch the flat screen TV in comfort or view the river and birdlife. Free high speed internet access is available, along with a spare laptop and printer.

Eel Pie Island is situated in the middle of the Thames at Twickenham, West London. It was given its name in the 16th century for supplying King Henry VIII with eel pies! It became famous again in the 1960's when various British rock bands, including the Rolling Stones and The Who, performed at a dance hall which has since been demolished. This small, car-free island with its friendly village atmosphere, has approximately 35 dwellings, 3 working boatyards, a rowing club, yacht club, a variety of artists studios and a number of houseboats. Access is via a footbridge from Twickenham and Ripple is 30 yards from the bridge.

Twickenham High Street, with its full range of shops, is 200 yards from the island's footbridge. Explore the narrow, old English lanes along by the river, past the medieval St Mary's Church and the Mary Wallace Theatre owned and run by the Richmond Shakespeare Society. Book yourself a table at the 17th century White Swan Pub where the food and beer are excellent. Within easy walking distance you can reach the famous Twickenham Rugby Stadium, the historic houses of Marble Hill and Ham House and a scenic towpath walk takes you to Richmond-upon -Thames where the Theatre often presents plays before they are shown in London's West End.

Twickenham British Rail Station is an 8 minute walk away and a frequent train service takes you to London Waterloo in 20 minutes. Heathrow Airport is a 25 minute taxi ride and can be reached by public transport. Gatwick Airport can also be easily reached by train. We would be happy to advise you on the details of these journeys. You do not need to hire a car to enjoy this part of west London because travel links are excellent but if you do choose to hire a car there is public carparking along Twickenham riverside opposite Ripple (altogether a 3 minute walk from car to Ripple). There are no designated parking places but there's not a problem with parking and permits are available from us if you need them. Within a 15 minute drive are Hampton Court (Henry VIII's Palace), Richmond Park (Henry's hunting ground), The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, and Sandown Race Course at Esher.

We have had a holiday rental home on the site of Ripple for 17 years- we live a 20 minute drive away- and 3 years ago (2010) completed the building of a brand new Ripple to our design. Our children have grown up with the river and the eccentricities of island life and we love the peace and quiet of this beautiful part of London. We have found that our visitors have enjoyed the added adventure of staying on an island whilst visiting London. And for all those honeymooners... we have now been written about in 'London for Lovers' by Sam Hodges and Sophie Vickers so let Ripple be a special place for you too!

'He who is tired of London is tired of life' Samuel Johnson 1777. Come and stay at Ripple and discover the delights of London.

About The Owner

We have two sons aged 22 and 17 and we have spent many happy weekends and holidays on Eel Pie Island while the children were growing up. It was here that they learnt to row and sail and we as a family became part of the island community enjoying raft races, island BBQs and many a pirate party for our children's birthdays. We are both self employed and Ripple has been a peaceful haven for us where we have shared so many happy memories with friends, neighbors and family. Come and be part of the 'Ripple' experience!

The Owner purchased this chalet in 1996

Why The Owner chose Richmond & Kew

For 28 years we have lived in west London with a view of the River Thames, and our love of boats and the water led us 17 years ago, to buy 'Ripple', our holiday home on Eel Pie Island, just 20 minutes drive away from where we live. We discovered the island on one of our boating adventures, saw a house for sale, and were captivated by the idea of holidaying in a wooden chalet off shore, in London! We found that crossing the bridge helped transport us to a place of rest and refreshment that was distinctive from our 'mainland' home. Over the years we have kept a variety of boats on our pontoon - sailing, motor, rowing - and have many great memories of boating adventures. Ask our boys how one of our engines came to be on the river bed!!

What makes this chalet unique

London - capital city of England and a great base for seeing the rest of Britain and Europe. Ripple, a unique holiday home in a beautiful part of London right on the River Thames. Staying on Eel Pie Island gives you peace and quiet, you'll be woken by birdsong and not airplanes, and you can easily access central London with the excellent travel links. Twickenham is on the British Rail network (fast train to Waterloo), Richmond (2 miles away) is on the District Line on the Tube, and Heathrow and Gatwick Airports are within easy reach by train or taxi. This part of London is steeped in history with many of its own amazing tourist attractions on the doorstep (Royal Palaces, Botanical Gardens, historic houses..) which enables you to combine visiting all the usual sights of central London while living in a vibrant, local community. What our visitors have said: S.Africa: 'We had an excellent visit to London. this is a lovely setting in contrast to busy London. A good place to come back to at the end of a hectic day of sight-seeing' New Hampshire, USA : 'Wonderful, perfect, lovely, walk across the bridge and you're in a different world! Feels like a home away from home' Seattle: 'We feel so fortunate to have based our first trip to London at Ripple. The sights in the City were fabulous. The trains, tube and buses worked well. But maybe best of all was returning home to Eel Pie Island each evening...' Ontario:'Very much enjoyed the history, heat and heavenly breezes of this hospitable neighborhood' Australia:'We can't wait to come again and will tell all our friends that you can have a relaxing family holiday with 3 children in London!'

A Peaceful Oasis

  • 5 of 5
Ripple was a marvelous place to stay for my family’s 10-day British holiday. It quickly became our calm oasis after a day of sightseeing and exploring. Eel Pie Island is a unique and peaceful place, while Twickenham has much to offer.

After our long flight from Philadelphia, we were greeted at Ripple with a bottle of wine and pastries from our host Sarah who had been very helpful before the trip. She suggested travel from Heathrow by Twickenham Green Car and some tasty dinner options.

Church Street in Twickenham is lined with many wonderful restaurants and we also had great food at both the Barmy Arms and The White Swan with its lovely seating along the Thames. When my daughters needed to fill their pizza desires, we had a nice meal at Pizza Express. On days we just wanted to relax at Ripple and eat on the porch, we bought some very good frozen meals from ‘Cook’ & heated them up in the kitchen. Cook is located right on London Road on the way to or from the train station. If I was planning this trip again, I would probably try to arrange to get back to Twickenham for dinner each night at one of the great spots.

The train station is an easy walk and we found the folks working there to be very helpful and keen to get our group of six the best price for wherever we wanted to go. Also, we never felt concerned about safety on our walks to/from the station regardless of the time of day.

Overall, it was a time of great memories and if the opportunity presents itself I would love to go back! We would absolutely stay at Ripple again!

Ducks, beer and trains.

  • 5 of 5
If you like watching ducks and geese swim by, great pubs with riverside beer gardens and fast trains to town then Ripple is the place to be.
Ripple is by far the most comfortable and best equipped vacation rental we have stayed at. The island location makes for a quiet relaxing spot but the shops, restaurants and pubs of Twickenham are just the other side of the pedestrian bridge. We particularly enjoyed the real ale in the garden of the family friendly Barmy Arms but there are plenty of options within a very short walk. The pubs can get very busy on rugby days but its a friendly boisterous crowd rather than rowdy.
There is a good selection of shops in Twickenham from small supermarkets like Waitrose to bookstores.
Twickenham railway station is only a five minute walk with 4 to 5 trains an hour into London, the fastest journey being just about 20 minutes. The ability to swiftly go from the heart of the city to Ripple's quiet garden watching kayakers make this an excellent location for seeing everything London has to offer whilst having a relaxing place to stay. We were able to make quick and easy connections for day trips out of London on the train to Bath, Oxford and Kent and getting to Kew Gardens and Hampton Court (both just a few miles from Ripple) in just minutes on public transportation was a bonus.
A delightful place to stay.

Exceptional!

  • 5 of 5
We just spent ten blissful days at Ripple with our three year old daughter and my 75 year old mother. It was perfect for all three generations. My sister got married at Richmond Park and she and her bridesmaid got ready at this lovely, comfortable and homey house. The photos are sure to be exceptional and it's proximity to the park meant it was a quick taxi ride to and from the wedding.

What sets Ripple apart from other self catering accommodation is that Sarah has thought of everything to ensure a comfortable stay. From plug adapters to cling film - everything is neatly in its place. The loan of a mobile phone, a handy binder of useful information, sugar, olive oil, salt, pepper, tea bags and coffee - all the basics are there. And that's just the pantry! Sarah has toys for the little ones and a selection of DVDs that are sure to suit just about everyone's tastes.

The house is wonderful. The photos really don't do it justice. The living room/dining room/kitchen is open plan, with plenty of room. The house is bright and the deck is great for watching river traffic with a glass of wine. The beds are very comfortable. The water pressure was great in the showers and there was plenty of hot water. The kitchen has plenty of dishes, pots, glasses etc.

The house is minutes from the Twickenham high street with all the shops, restaurants and pubs you will need. It's a five minute walk to the train station which gets you to Waterloo Station in about 20 minutes if you catch the fast train and 30 minutes if you don't. The location is ideal. Close enough to the hustle and bustle of downtown London and all the attractions, yet a reprieve from the high pace of the city.

Some helpful hints: get an Oyster card if you plan to travel in and out of London. It's basically a pass for the trains, underground and buses. We picked ours up when we arrived at Heathrow airport and put £20 on it and topped it up throughout our stay. Super handy.

Try eating at The White Swan for Sunday lunch. The roast beef was delicious! We also had a great dinner at The Fox. The selection of local pies and sausages were really good. Try having a pint or two at The Three Kings.

Get your groceries at the Waitross (I think that's what it was called) near the train station.

Check out the farmers market for fresh produce on Saturday (behind the Marks & Spencer's).

This is an exceptional holiday rental and the location can't be beat.

Best Kept Secret No More

  • 5 of 5
Choosing vacation accommodations, especially those that are thousands of miles away, usually involve a leap of faith. Thumbnail pictures and elaborate descriptions too often lure one in with the promise of a perfect match, which ultimately turns out to be the art of a creative photographer or would-be travel writer. I am delighted to report that Ripple was a welcome and wonderful departure; it absolutely delivered on every promise, and then some. Our family of 4 (16 y/o daughter and 11 y/o son) enjoyed 14 blissful days at Ripple and enjoyed every minute; the saddest moment of our trip being that when we closed the door to make our final walk across the bridge as we head to the airport. We actually adjusted our vacation dates to match Sarah's availability on the gut instinct that this unassuming, out-of-the-way house on the river was the ideal spot from which to base our combination family reunion (with extended family in Richmond and Twickenham) and London adventure; we are SO glad that we did. Every aspect of Ripple is as portrayed in every respect, with the focal point being its wonderful open plan living area and deck, which affords the vantage point from which to cradle a steaming cup of tea, whilst watching and listening to the river and surrounding area come alive in the morning, or gaze upon sun drenched clouds painting the river in color at the end of a busy day of exploring the city (which really is just a short stroll and train ride away). In addition to all of London's attractions, Ripple offers just as many delights within walking distance, all of which punctuated our time there: from the Twickenham Saturday farmer's market (get the pies and sausage rolls!), to Hampton Court Palace and the riverboat ride home, to the water front pubs, to the river walk to Richmond, to afternoon (and morning!) pastries from Patisserie Valerie, and, of course, many (sometimes too many) loaves of bread from the Pound Store to feed the ducks, geese and swans, Ripple provided an amazing canvas for so many fantastic memories that we still reflect on, many months later. Sarah, we are sorry it's taken us so long to pen this review, but we thank you and your family again so much for your hospitality and for giving us the chance to experience this very special place. We can't wait to get back to what is now clearly no longer (much to our dismay!) a best kept secret! Let us know if summer 2014 opens up! :)

Want to live there forever!

  • 5 of 5
We travel extensively and had come to Richmond for a friends wild 80th birthday extravaganza.
We decided to use vrbo instead of a hotel, and we are so happy we did. Nothing can equal the atmosphere of Eel pie Island, nor the comfort of The Boat House. Immaculate throughout, very comfy bed with best linens kept us in bed longer than we wanted to be many mornings. Totally outfitted kitchen, service for a large family.
However, we were just two and loved the well planned space and privacy, The diverse type of boats going by on River Thames, the many, many birds flying around made us feel as if we were alone on the island.
Lovely foot bridge to and from, gave view to all types of life on the river. Just at the end of the street from the island, 5 minute walk, was Church street with wonderful restaurants and a little further on, a food market.
We used the taxi Sarah suggested and it came promptly but it was a very easy walk to the Twickenham train station, or upriver to the Richmond Bridge.
We want to recommend a special place to have lunch and it is Petersham
Nursery on the other side of the river. Unique and excellent food.
Do not hesitate to wander around this petite island and see artists in their studios.
We will return.
Thank you so much Peter and Sarah for providing this very wonderful place!

Perfect locale for a multi-generational family vacation

  • 5 of 5
We were looking for a place to meet up and stay with family from overseas, and Ripple was exactly the right place for our family of 4 plus grandparents. We ended up not going into London quite as much as planned as there was so much to do in the area. Be sure to check out all the local parks, pubs, Great homes, lovely "secret" gardens, boat rentals, and sidewalk cafes that Twickenham and Richmond have to offer. We loved school shopping in Kingston, which is an easy double-decker bus ride away. Back at the house, we had our morning coffee in the garden, overlooking the Thames, watching the rowers & the flocks of birds -- maybe Ripple is too comfortable, because on a lovely August morning, it was hard to leave and head into Central London. When we did get moving and off to site seeing, we used our Oyster cards, and taking the train and underground was not a problem at all -- we were on the ground at Waterloo within 30 minutes. Thanks so much, Sarah! We would definitely stay at Ripple again.
