Kehena Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, Studio Unit, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3-4) or Complete Main House (Sleeps 2-8)

Why not make your trip unforgettable by staying somewhere so remarkable that it made the front page of The New York Times?

On June 30, 2005, POHAKUNANI (Hawaiian for 'The Beautiful Rocks'), appeared on both the front page and inside the home section of The NEW YORK TIMES, having also been featured in the June issue of CALIFORNIA HOME & DESIGN magazine. With architecture by Craig Steely and interior & landscape design by Robert Trickey, Pohakunani also appears in two design & architecture books: ISLAND LIVING, by Linda Leigh Paul, (pub: Rizzoli), and MINIMALIST HOUSES by Simone Schleifer (pub: Taschen).

Why all this publicity?

When you see the sleek simplicity of the design setting off the jagged lava field, framing stunning views that sweep from the ridge of the rift zone down to the glimmering ocean, you’ll know why.

Please note that this listing is for the Studio Unit Guest House (sleeps 1 to 4) but you can also rent the stunning Main House (sleeps up to 8).

The automated calendar below tracks ONLY the availability of the Guest House unit, so if you're interested in the Main House, please contact us directly at 808 965-7710 or by e-mail here.

At 850 square feet, the private Guest House Studio Unit is spacious enough to feel like a real home, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors (opening onto the unit’s own lanai) seem to extend the space, capturing the lovely garden like a gorgeous painting.

At Pohakunani, you'll find a more stylish, tasteful and private experience than any of the other rentals in the area, at comparable prices. Here, you can enjoy all the wild beauty of this place from a comfortable and sophisticated vantage point.

Many of our guests find themselves just hanging around the deep-blue pool for hours on end, relaxing in the quiet, other-worldly beauty of the place (and most express the wish that they didn’t have to leave!)

With regard to Puna, if you haven’t stayed in this area before, you’ll be amazed to find such a truly heavenly and unspoiled part of “Old Hawaii” as these parts— Lush and green, yet drier and better for outdoor activities than other parts of Puna— You’ll see why residents think of it as “our little secret”.

GUEST HOUSE AMENITIES:

Use of the beautiful in-ground swimming pool; Handsome designer furnishings; Fully equipped kitchen & dining areas; Good quality Cal King & Twin beds; High thread-count sheets & fluffy towels; Satellite TV (200+ channels of programs & music); DVD player & VCR; Local calls on phone & internet access; Ceiling fan & dimmers on all switches; Large selection of books; Charcoal barbecue.

Arrangements can also be made for: Rental bikes & other sporting equipment; Tours & activities; Massage & bodywork (all at discount rates through our local connections.)

Paradise in Puna!

  • 5 of 5
My partner and I arrived on the 30th of August for a 10 day stay in the main house with other friends arriving later. We were a total of five guests and we were all gathering for the marriage of two dear friends taking place nearby in Puna.
Our stay could not have been more incredible if it had been written in a fairy tale! Our hosts were amazing and the house was beyond what any of us could have imagined. Everything we required was there and if it wasn't it was taken care of immediately and with good cheer by Robert, the owner. I cannot be more emphatic about the beauty of this property.
The house itself is an architectural gem. The gardens are mature and glorious in the diversity of textures and colours of the local and indigenous flora. The decoration of the house is superb and comfortable. In all, this property is a complete exercise in the great art of the integration of architecture, landscape and decoration all combining to create one magic whole!
To say that the house was comfortable is an understatement. So many places to rest, relax and play. The Lanai and adjoining swimming pool became the epicenter of the "indoor/outdoor" life we were privileged to be enjoying. The peacefulness of this property nestled in the lava flow cannot be expressed in words. From our bedroom we woke every morning to the rising sun over the old lava field - from the 1950's lava flow - and the ocean in the near distance. What better way to start any day?!
In addition to the glory of the house itself is the fact that it sits in one of the most idyllic locations on the planet. The beauty of the natural landscape and the ocean as the two melt into each other is breathtaking. The house is also close enough to excellent shopping with a natural foods market - Island Naturals - that rivals Whole Foods in its offering of excellent local fruits, vegetables and meats in addition to all the other foodstuffs that one would require or want. There are also many other local offerings such as the nearby yoga retreat, the natural hot water pools and the snorkeling and especially the amazing black sand beaches set amidst the drama of the rocky cliffs that edge the Big Island here as the Pacific Ocean crashes into it. It is also not too far from Volcano National Park which is a must see for anyone who visits the area.
We have traveled extensively around the world and definitely consider this one of our top finds. We are looking forward to the day we return!

Owner's Response: It is such a pleasure to host guests like Micheal and his whole group; they were ecstatic whenever I spoke with them at the beauty of the house and the surroundings and really got the "deep-recharging" sort of vacation it seemed they all needed from their hectic city lives.

The place was immaculate when they left, and the communication we had was open and very thorough and I am so happy when people connect so well to what I've tried to create here for my guests. I would invite them back whenever they can arrange it, and I so appreciate the patronage of such sophisticated and friendly guests.

Second Stay as Great as the First

  • 5 of 5
If you've never been to an Hawaiian island before, know that this one, particularly this east side of the Big Island is about witnessing earth's dynamic of new land forming and finding fantastic enclaves, not only of tropical vegetation, but settlements on a frontier of sorts, like the very cool and modern architecture of Robert Trickey's house amidst a 1955 lava flow. This was our second visit to Robert's house and a stay in his guest house proved, once again, to be really wonderful. It was pleasant to see that not much has changed since our prior visit in 2005(?). That trip of two weeks gave us ample time to really explore and understand much about the Big Island. As a result, this trip returning to a familiar spot had its advantages - less time running about, more time to simply relax and do nothing. We did of course enjoy catching some morning rays and brave the waves on good swim days at nearby Kehena beach. It's a 15 min walk from the house. Swimming there is a challenge as the bold surf makes getting in and out of the water difficult, but once beyond the wave-breaks and having learned that timing is everything, the depth and clarity of the water is astonishing. If you time it right you might swim with dolphins, though for us they proved elusive on both our trips. Almost everyday we walked the neighborhood for exercise, mornings and evenings. If you loop back and forth covering every road in the development it's about a mile-and-a-half. Often we'd extend the routine with a trek across the main road and through some wooded land to watch the sea while doing some body stretching on the bluff under the Ironwoods . Returning back to the guesthouse a cool plunge in the pool was always welcome. Robert's sweet dogs, Epoe and Aka, were always happy to see us. We read books, reclined on the couch with lanai sliders wide open, stared out at the lunar-like landscape of the lava from the main lanai, and enjoyed everything about Hawaii's fantastic climate, no matter what was going on with the weather. We missed Robert this trip as he was on the mainland, but all the special arrangements he made for us were handled graciously by Jim, a super-nice guy and friend in charge. Mahalo, Jim, ...Mahalo, Robert! We cherish our wonderful memories of times spent with you and your place in Puna Palisades.

We've just returned from spending 4 wonderful nights/ 5 days at this hidden oasis of peace and quiet. Robert, our host, was spot on with his local information and his tips for making our stay more enjoyable.Comfortable and clean, with a beautiful setting, we couldn't have asked for much more.( Robert, we will tell all our friends). The only thing we have left is to decide when we'll go back next year to stay at this fine location!

Not only was the location perfect, the home was simply fantastic! Robert was incredible as a host and a fast friend! We really enjoyed doing Qigong each morning and the wonderful gifts of a beautiful and quiet location to simply, be. Not far from the house was Kalapani Farmers Market on Wednesday evening we enjoyed Kava and vegetarian and vegan eats and many artisan wares! It was complete perfection and we never wanted to leave! Thank you Robert!!! Thank you Epo and Aca too for sending great canine energy our way!

Beautiful secluded guest house

  • 5 of 5
Robert's spacious guest home was a great retreat in the more secluded Puna district of Hawaii. Robert was a warm and gracious host, and communication and logistics were easy to work out with him. The modern design is amazing, and I loved the big windows of the guest house allowing views of the beautiful garden. When we came, it was rained about everyday, which we were naively not so ready for, but the rains were brief. The home is located amongst the surreal lava fields, and coming from Waikiki, really has that rural island feel. The only thing that kind of detracted from the stay was the high humidity, but it's not something that you can do much about. Otherwise, a great stay and I'd definitely recommend for someone looking for a quiet relaxing getaway!

Above the norm

  • 5 of 5
Far exceeded our expectations in every way. For anyone interested in architecture, fine design, and landscaping this was a paradise. Very clean and well appointed. Everything one would need for a comfortable stay. Owner was helpful in every way, but not obtrusive. A great place to relax, read, and enjoy the pool and beautiful surroundings. Several good restaurants about fifteen minutes away in Pahoa; especially enjoyed Kaleo's, Ng's (Thai), and the new Vietnamese place. A real treat!

Owner's Response: Thanks, Bill and John, and we are a regular mutual admiration society, because you both were model guests-- It's so easy to be a good host when people are as well-mannered and appreciative of the details of the architecture and landscape, and the other features that make the house outstanding. I hope you come back very soon, and thanks for your kind & generous words. Aloha, Robert
