Our recently renovated home gets rave reviews. Guests enjoy the space, light, Douglas fir floors and windows, interesting art, comfortable furniture and modern amenities. French windows open from the living room to a large, two stage deck partially shaded by wistaria and clematis, where you can sit with a coffee or a glass of wine to enjoy the ever-changing colours of the ocean. Or the whole party can eat out there, table and chairs provided, with the Italian spiral staircase providing a short cut down to the lower deck, the hot tub and the enclosed garden.
The state-of the-art ventilation system provides fresh air and comfort to the whole house year-round. There are two comfy Queen size beds, one up, one down, with two single beds also upstairs which can be placed together, if desired. The other single (bunk) beds are particularly popular with children. Wheelchair access to the house is through the side door, with wooden ramps continuing around the house leading to the lower floor, garden and hot tub. There are also aides for the toilet and the bath tub. (For six years we have welcomed disabled people and their helpers for their annual holiday). Many others come regularly, from frisbee golf tournament players to nature-loving bureaucrats winding down. We had four generations in one family gathering. Dogs are welcome.
We love to come to Pender Island ourselves every year, to check on our summer-resident killer whales (3 new babies this year, we hear), and to restore our souls and bodies. After an ocean kayak or a steep hike, or getting mildly lost on curvy roads and trails, there is nothing like the hot tub last thing at night....and when the house lights are dimmed, the stars are brighter than anywhere else on earth!

We, John and Pam Waddington, have lived in the same house in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, for 37 years. We have 3 sons and 4 grandchildren who live in the area. Pam trained as a social worker, John is an engineer, still consulting part-time. It was a big project to buy and re-design Arbutus House, and we love to get back to it and beautiful, welcoming Pender Island regularly. We treasure our Visitors Book and its comments, and urge all our guests to contribute their own thoughts and comments. Some guest dialogue exists on our intriguing art work!
Pam Waddington purchased this house in 2001
We bought Arbutus House in 2001 and completely re-built it in the West Coast Arts and Crafts style, as a retirement project. Many friends and relatives contributed ideas and features - the hot tub unanimous! But we are not quite ready yet to make the big move out West. Meanwhile, it is very satisfying to have other people enjoy the fruits of our labours, and we are very grateful for the good care and appreciation our house and belongings receive. We have a unique combination of all modern conveniences on our island (mains water, sewer and electric power), privacy at home amidst towering trees, and unspoilt nature with woodland trails, many public beaches and those fabulous Arbutus trees to admire.
A mother deer leading its baby up the driveway to our porch - hoping for an apple? Bald eagles soaring overhead; so many wonderful walks with fabulous views; wild flowers in the lower garden, colourful flowers, bulbs, trees and shrubs; yummy blackberries in late summer. We sleep particularly well here, with so much time spent outdoors. Two tennis courts and Frisbee Golf in walking distance. We also enjoy the variety of Island restaurants, and try out the latest (new in 2010 are Birdie's Bistro, open to all at the golf course, offering all-day breakfast and great variety, highly recommended; and yummy Fish and Chips at Driftwood or take-out).
My whole family, my mother, husband, child and myself, really loved Pender Island, and appreciated very much what Arbutus House provided, especially the hot tub!
Disc golf (also called Frisbee golf) is enjoyed by all from 7 to 70+, be they first-timers at the woodland Course in walking distance of our house, or Americans visiting for an International-level tournament (yes, really!) If you can throw a frisbee, you will ENJOY an hour in woodland.
