Scuba/Snorkel!: Islamorada, long recognized as the 'Sport Fishing Capital of the World,' is now an icon among sport divers for a similar reason: a massive population of tropical marine life. High profile coral heads and broad ledges shelter huge congregates of French grunt and goat fish, while regal queen angelfish casually graze amid the reef recesses. Friendly green moray eels swim freely along the spur-and-groove channels, and reclusive nurse sharks lurk beneath the overhangs. Islamorada offers a wide variety of shallow coral reefs, mini walls, shipwrecks, and even an underwater habitat for scientific research, the Aquarius. To learn more about Islamorada or any other manner of local lore, stop by the Chamber of Commerce at MM 82.5. --- *The Eagle - This 287 ft. ship was intentionally sunk in 110 ft. of water as a dive attraction, cloaked in sponge & coral, populated by grunt, harpoon & jack. *Davis Reef - Reef revered for its incredible concentration of grunts & schoolmaster snapper...
Coming from the cold Norway, we spent a warm week here. We have been visiting Key West, the Everglades National Park (and the alligator farm) and also a boat trip to the coral reef. Nearby we have been on the beach in the Founder's Park. Thanks for a lovely week here.
Casa Linda proved to be the perfect choice for our Keys vacation. The booking process from start to finish was very easy and Ena was quick to respond to all questions. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly. The house was immaculate and almost exactly as pictured. The only difference from the pictures was that one of the downstairs bedrooms had a very comfortable queen size bed instead of twins. The house is well furnished will more room than we needed and the king size bed in the master was very comfortable. Linens were of good quality and plentiful. We really enjoyed the open space and spiral staircase but it obviously wouldn’t work well for someone with mobility issues. The outdoor areas also hosted a variety of seating areas so you could be in or out of the sun or breeze, you could even sit outside in the rain. As the pictures showed, there is no barrier between the patio area and canal which was great for us but parents with small children would need to be vigilant.
There is only one restaurant within a mile - Boardwalk Pizza which was good and also provided quick delivery service. There are many a short drive away, our favorite was Made to Order which has a great breakfast and lunch menu. Winn-Dixie was also a short drive and was very well stocked.
What really made our stay special was the canal access. We rented kayaks from Paddle the Florida Keys who provided exceptional service and a very reasonable price. It took a little effort to get the kayaks in and out of the water and us in and out of them but it was well worth it. We are not experienced but we could easily paddle through the canals and out to the bay and explore the surrounding mangroves. We also had the thrill of having the curious manatees visit with us several times on our excursions. We had as many as six of them surrounding us and coming up apparently to have their heads scratched. While it is intimidating to have them swim under your kayak they seemed very gentle, occasionally pushing the kayak a little but never aggressively. They also visited our dock area several times. We also saw a variety of fish, birds and resident iguanas on our trips.
We also visited several parks also the Keys; Windley Key which is and abandoned quarry, Bahia Honda with nice beaches for the keys and Crane Point Nature preserve. The diving museum was interesting as well. We went fishing and our son went diving with Scuba-Do who provided excellent customer service and guides in the water.
This was the perfect rental for our 2 families who were there to boat and fish. The house is absolutely beautiful, clean, and spacious. Is stocked with MORE than you need for a vacation! Canal is peaceful and just a few minute boat ride to the Gulf. Very happy with my first time renting a "house".
