Being a NYC resident for many years, I have been going up to the Catskills for many years for some R&R, and fun, of course! The area has only improved in more restaurants and services popping up every where. But still preserving that lack of pressure and natural beauty of the area. I now have a mini-farm with chickens, ducks, geese, bees and turkeys...my extensive garden gives fresh delicious fruits and veggies most of the year...aaahhh sanity!
Claire purchased this cottage in 2003
The area offers a lot "for the money"...the traffic issue of the Hamptons, etc is not an issue. the people are easy going, and just plain nice. you can enjoy local veggies, fruits, eggs, honey, etc...swimming and fishing are fantastic, and there's beautiful golf 10 minutes and a half hour away that is awesome. Villa Roma also offers racquetball, and tennis. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts offers a bit of musical culture in a gorgeous new complex which includes a museum and a great calendar of well known acts, such as Sting, Santana, and the NY Philharmonic.
I bike, hike, fish, , swim, kayak at the lake or down the Delaware River, farm & garden, take scenic drives, play tennis, two beautiful golf courses, one 10 minutes away (French woods) the other a hlf hour away (Villa Roma)horseback ride, ski, read, stare at views that never disappoint, cook, and eat at great restaurants...and taste the local wine.
The cottage is a perfect blend of old and new. I spent a week, where until my daughter arrived midweek I was alone on the lake with my two dogs and nature. Perfect for someone wanting peace. Having rented other place where the linens were not what I would have liked I had packed a suitcase full. It stayed in the car. Claire provides lovely linens. There is plenty of hot water and water pressure for those for whom that is important.
The scenery is enchanting. You can see every rock in the bottom of the lake and every trout that swims by. I was amazed to see herons that far north but herons there were to my delight. If you are driving in to or from the cabin in the evening the herds of deer in the meadows just pick their heads up and watch you go by or stop and look as you take their photos. Granted you are only going 10 miles an hour or you will lose your transmission on the bumpy road to paradise.
Trips out to Calicoon, the Sunday flea market is wionderful, The Cafe Devine, devine and their lattes even better, trips to Roscoe, Horton, and Andes well worth the ride but really I did not want to leave the lake.
I can't wait to get back to the cabin, hopefully this summer, granted I will not have the lake to myself but it will only add to the charm i am sure.
My family had such a great time at this cottage. It's right on the lake, and just waking up and having coffee on a deck overlooking the water was amazing. If you're looking to simply get away for a few days, this would be the perfect place for a retreat.
An escape like no other... on our initial trip up the mountain, we were apprehensive thinking we'd made a bad choice, as it is secluded. However, one trip down the mountain, fishing the Delaware River, eating and walking in the small towns (Hancock and Callicoon) we realized it was perfect! Attended a concert at Bethel Woods (Woodstock) and a day trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown - centrally located. The cottage itself is clean, warm and inviting and the owner is wonderful ... a very gracious and attentive hostess. All in all, I would recommend this for couples or small families with children over eight years old or so.
We are very lucky to have been able to spend a week on the lake in July. My 4 yo daughter still talks about it! I'm sure if my dog spoke, she'd be talking about it too. The cottage was super cute, comfy & had a great kitchen to cook in & a brilliant porch to have our meals on. I wish we could have stayed longer. We will be back for sure.
My wife and I stayed here june 2010, It was as wonderful as all the descriptions and pictures.
Clean, cozy, and quiet, a great getaway.... We can't wait to go again, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet romantic week or weekend.
