Harborside at Atlantis - Christmas 08

My husband and I, l along with our 17 and 22 year old sons, spent a week at Harborside in Christmas of 2008. Overall, the property was what we expected, and it was a great trip. Excellent value for a family - you get room to spread out plus all the amenities of Atlantis. The villa had a living room with pullout sofa, breakfast area, patio overlooking the channel and Royal Towers, full kitchen, laundry are, master bedroom suite, and full bath.
The bedding, linens, and furniture were of lower quality than we were used to, but the space and amenities made up for it. The kitchen has a refrigerator, two burner stovetop, blender, microwave, sink, dishwasher, dishes, glasses, utensils, and a variety of pots and microwave ware. You could cook meals with do problem, although we didn't do much actual "cooking," just microwaving.
I was surprised at how few people on the property had rental cars. Parking was free and literally next to the building. If you book ahead of time, you can get a weekly car rental for under $300 for the entire week. We brought a suitcase of dry goods from home (cereal, granola bars, peanut butter, crackers, Kool-aid mix, popcorn, cookies, etc.) and went to a local grocery for perishable and heavy items (milk, juice, fruit, soft drinks, bread, etc.) and ate breakfast, lunch, and snacks in the room each day. We also brought some collapsable six pack coolers from home and used them to take drinks to the pool with us.
Expedia and other travel agencies advertise bookings at Harborside that are far more expensive that what you can negotiate with individual owners, particularly in this economy. Tourism is down drastically in the Bahamas - Cable Beach was practically deserted, and the Atlantis was only at 1/3 occupancy when we arrived (it doubled to 2/3 at the end of the holiday, as people arrived for New Years). There are some great deals to be had, and the islanders certainly do appreciate the business.
