You get what you pay for

Renting this property was a good reminder of the saying "you get what you pay for". Unfortunately, this was the first time my family and I rented a vacation home in the Poconos, so we didn't know what you have to pay for something decent. Overall, we found this property to be very poorly maintained and would not recommend it to anyone but college students on a very tight budget. The upper level was passable, but the lower level, which contains 3 bedrooms, reeked of mold and mildew when we first arrived, and the floor was littered with dead bugs. When we called the owner to complain he advised us to turn on the dehumidifier (which was already running) and open the windows. Neither of these things helped. The only thing that worked was turning on the heat and drying out the place; that took care of the awful smell but not the dead bugs! Also, many of the appliances didn't work or were temperamental. Only half of the grill outside lit up, and after about 15 minutes there was a fire going UNDER the grill so we had to turn it off and obtain disposable grills from the grocery store. There weren't enough working light bulbs so my mother had to take the light bulb from the living room for her bedroom lamp each night. When we ran the washing machine it routinely blew a fuse and we lost light in the lower level. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. These owners should be ashamed of renting this place out, for any price. They refunded us $100 but that doesn't even begin to make up for the problems and lack of cleanliness in this house. My advice: stay away!
