One of the finest views in America. At an elevation of 1,500 feet you are generally above the coastal fog. One mile from Highway One. Sunrise over your meadow, sunsets over the ocean. Wildlife, in addition to your own: deer, bobcats, coyotes, wild turkeys, fox and condors! Very private: Electronic locked steel gate, clothing optional 24/7. I Pod dock, XM satellite radio, three LED HDDVR's, two speakers in every room. WiFi and internet service. Best for one or two couples - you'll flip a coin to see who gets the upstairs bedroom, with views to Japan and pop-up LED HDDVR TV. Clear glass skylights over every bed, for the stars. Air bed on the deck. Very green: double paned, tinted Pella windows and doors, radiant in- floor heating, seven layers of insulation.
WE LOVE DOGS AND HORSES, so if you have either and want to bring them, they would love it here. (Extra charge for horses.) No cats, please.
Soporific deep cushion deck furniture: 12 chairs and 2 chaise's, plus a large coffee table, and a tile- topped dining seating six. Large lower deck and another deck in back that seats four and sleeps one. All cushions are 4' deep Sunbrella, web bottoms. Large bottom cushion for slouching and napping. In silence. Or with music.
We have a great sound system, but sometimes it is better to just sit on the deck and listen: the wind in the trees, the zoom of humming birds, the distant gobble of wild turkeys, the occasional screech of a hawk or falcom, the flutter of the wings of a startled owl ...
We meet most of Forbe's Standards for a 5 Star Resort. Sorry, no room service.
If creativity is your thing, if you thrive on originality and the unusual, this is your place. Finished building in April, 2010. We have lots of whimsy mixed in with fine art and sculpture; a kind of a whacky elegance. 'Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife....' (Thomas Gray)
We call it Moose Lodge as a play on words, for our lovable hound, Moose. But this is deinitely not a men's fraternal organization.
Please note that the words 'stunning', 'breathtaking' 'awesome' and 'spectacular' were never used in the narrative above. Those words have been co-opted by the realtors.
'On this majestic set of battlements - watched over by eagles, suspended so far above the ocean that even the barks of sea lions are muted- who wouldn't feel safe? At this height, almost the only sound is the wind in the redwoods and Big Sur looks rugged and unscalable. I have never seen another place in the world like it. Its ridges and promontories inspire mingled feelings of peace and power and health... simply to exist here is to feel purified.' Paul Theroux, Bon Appetit, March, 1994

About Bill and Anne Burleigh
My wife and I are in our seventies, going on fifties. Bill is a retired judge, and Anne still teaches people how to sing. We live here eight months a year, then rent it during the summer. We enjoy sharing this remarkable place. We have two dogs, two horses, and eight chickens - the latter at Anne's home in Carmel Valley. I guess we just like all living things, including people.
Bill and Anne Burleigh purchased this lodge in 1973
Why Bill and Anne Burleigh chose Big Sur
It seems unlikely that one could fall in love with an inanimate object, but 40 years ago I fell in love with one that is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide: Big Sur, California. Unlike most love affairs, this one has never dimmed or disappointed me. Big Sur is my passion. It might be yours.
(The original home here burned in 2008; rebuilt in 2010)
What makes this lodge unique
Sensuality. Music. Laughter. Reading. Privacy. Whimsy. Art and sculpture. Freedom to sing loud, dance 'til you drop. Bang the big gongs at the entrance. Get naked. Just plain let loose. Leave frantic world behind. Drop out. These are unique things in our normal, hectic busy lives. Life here is not normal.
We have something preciouis here, something you can't find in the finiest, most exclusive and expensive resorts: TOTAL PRIVACY. Think about it.
