Beautiful, well loved and recently remodeled 101 year-old, 5-bedroom Craftsman brown shingle home in the Elmwood neighborhood of Berkeley. Our home was designed and built by Charles S. Jordan in 1909 and is known as the Landon House after the secretary of the Pacific Stock exchange for whom it was built.
Acknowledging the major renovation we recently completed, on May 27, 2010 our home was honored by the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association with their top award for a Historically Accurate Reconstruction.
This house is four short blocks to the historical Elmwood shopping and dining neighborhood, one of Berkeley's most prized neighborhoods, with fine dining, ethnic restaurants, bookstores, ice cream stores, cafes, and the local art movie theater. The Elmwood is so loved that it inspired a book some years ago which gives a great accounting of its colorful and vibrant history! The book is called: "A Tale of the Elmwood District in Berkeley," and here is what Charles Burress, Chronicle Staff Writer had to write about it in the Chronicle on Monday, January 1, 2001:
"Berkeley -- Just about every neighborhood has a story to tell, but few are remembered in time's long parade. But in Berkeley, a city passionate about protecting neighborhoods, there is one district so beloved by the citizens that it has inspired its own biography. Tales from the Elmwood serves as a small museum not only of a place that has preserved a classic small-town charm but also of the extraordinary lives who've found a haven there.”
We are 1.5 blocks to the east of College avenue which extends from the town of Rockridge at one end, and the California College of Art, to the University of California of Berkeley (CAL) at the other end.
We are just one mile (an easy walk) to the Rockridge BART station (Bay Area Rapid Transit) with easy access to San Francisco, which is just 8 miles away. Monterey and Carmel are approximately a 2 hour drive and the wine country, Napa Valley and Sonoma are only about an hour's drive. At your doorstep are some of the most beautiful parks and hiking trails in the east bay park district.
The home is artistically decorated and welcoming, has three outdoor decks above the ground floor, and a kitchen that opens onto a brick patio and private back garden area full of trees, gardens, and a swing set all enclosed by a fence. There is also a beautiful and tranquil garden in front.
There is no freeway noise and the house is on a quiet street with ample street parking. House set up with wireless internet & cable, and national phone service already running & included. Minimum rental: 1 Week. Security Deposit due upon booking. Easy highway access to all Downtown areas: Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco...there in minutes!
In addition to four traditional bedrooms on the second floor (each sleeping two), there is a room on the first floor with a daybed (sleeps one), and an expansive third floor that runs the length of the house and has two queen beds quite separated. The third floor has its own deck, with a spectacular view of the Berkeley hills, the Berkeley campus Campanile, and (when the trees have less foliage) the golden gate bridge. In addition to the two full bathrooms on the second floor, both the first and third floors have half bathrooms.
