About Ridlon & Carin Kiphart

We are 10 year veterans of the luxury hotel industry and wanted to create a mountain lodge retreat with the look and feel of the 5-Star western lodges we worked with over the years. In the summer, we spend time on our outdoor living decks, love watching the abundant wildlife on the property, go hiking and enjoy a glass of wine in the hot tub. In the winter, we love the skiing (downhill and x country) and chilling out by the fireplace. Every year, we travel and guide people to the most exotic places in the world but always look forward to coming back to this mountain lodge home.

The Bitterroot Valley grabbed us with its stunning grandeur, access to millions of acres of National Forests, friendly people and absolute wealth of outdoor activities. We drove the Rocky Mountains from New Mexico to Canada looking for our mountain home and this is what we chose. We love it dearly.

Ridlon & Carin Kiphart purchased this house in 2003

National Forest on three sides of the home. And at the heart of all of it, a beautifully finished, custom log home.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for letting us stay at your beautiful home! From all the pictures and art work it looks like you both live a pretty amazing life! While we were there we were able to celebrate my husbands 30th birthday as well as the life of his grandmother who died on Thursday evening. Staying there with our good friends really helped take our minds off things. We enjoyed snowmobiling, shopping, playing games, and putting together your 750 piece jungle puzzle! It was nice to relax since we all have very busy schedules. Thank you again for everything!

Sitting on the deck feels like your flying over the valley!

  • 5 of 5
Sitting on the deck, watching the large fluffy clouds, the sun slowly rolled over from hill to hill, highlighting different peaks and valleys - a real treat to watch! You feel on top of the world. The jacuzzi was GREAT! Beautiful home with all amenities, and accommodating owners. We do recommend arriving for the first time in the daylight.

Very Nice! (Would give 4.5 stars if I could)

  • 4 of 5
My family of 6, including 4 teens/youths, just completed a 7-day stay and had a very nice time just relaxing and getting away from it all. The home is very nice inside and out, well equipped, and in a pretty location. The price is reasonable and could easily sleep 10 people if you include the comfy couches! Very interesting decor including many owner's personal items and nice library of books in travel, geography, history, or US civil war. The DVD library of movies was very good too for nightly down time.
No real complaints at all, but a few observations that may help future travelers:

To get to the house, you must travel 6.2 miles of gravel/dirt roads after leaving Hwy 93. Keep this in mind if you are very particular about your vehicle -- we had a rental, so no big deal for us. The 1/2 mile driveway is a bit steep with several switchbacks. Winter must be exciting!

The wildlife was a bit scarce during our visit. We did see a family of 3 mule deer ranging around the area on most days. Also, heard coyotes a couple of times at night, but that was about it. The area has suffered from forest fires which has cleared out a lot of the trees, so this may have caused the animals to leave too. The Meadowlarks and Magpies were very active, if not noisy at times! The views and peacefulness of the area was still very nice. And almost NO BUGS! That was great.

During our stay, we had the longest days of the year. The sun didn't set until after 9:30pm, and not sure whether it's the altitude or latitude, but twilight seemed to linger until about 10:30pm or later! This has two effects:
1) Star-gazing. As great as it was, you really had to wait until about 11:30pm or later to get really dark. Fortunately, we had a waning (almost new) moon. Got to see the Milky Way for the first time ever; 3 satellites and 3 shooting stars in the first 30 minutes, and could see stars all the way down to the horizon!
2)Movie-watching. A very nice home theater setup on the 2nd floor could have been even better with curtains/blinds on the windows -- especially on the west wall where the setting sun shines directly onto the nice big TV.

The open architecture of the log home is very pretty. However, every sound travels far with the hard interior. You can easily hold a conversation between the 2nd floor and the basement.

3 bathrooms are nice, but 2 don't have the greatest privacy. No locking doors, and like I said, sounds travel easily! :-)

"The Great Escape"

Its a bit of a drive from the Missoula Airport and from the highway in Darby but so worth the effort. The cabin is beautiful and the scenery is spectacular. I saw deer every single day on the property and have never been in a more quiet place on earth. I just wish the weather was better so I could have enjoyed the porches more. Thank you Ridlon and Carin for sharing your home with me. I enjoyed every minute of my month long stay.

Awesome

The house is a breath of fresh air. We saw deer all 5 days there as well as bull elk bugle one morning. My only adventure to others is not to bring kids under 5. They have any nice artifacts everywhere that are in grabbing range as well as the the stairs are not gated so they could fall..

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your kind review! You are totally right, our log home is decorated with many beautiful artifacts from around the world and that is one of the things that makes it so special. The home and area are absolutely fantastic places for families including children, but we wanted it to have the feel of a fine western lodge, not a children's playroom. Special attention is definitely required with children because of the decor and furniture but this gives adults a place where they want to be.

This house is beautiful yet practical and comfortable. You know the owners love and take pride in their 5-star home and we enjoyed every bit of it. If you want a place to spend the entire day relaxing and enjoying magnificant views--this is it. If you want a place to come to in the evenings, enjoy the hot tub under the stars and relaxing, after spending the day on the trails or fishing--this is it. The price is very reasonable and the owners worked with us so that we had an enjoyable visit with our firefighter son working out of West Fork. Don't miss an opportunity to stay!
