About Barbara

While originally from Maine, we currently live in Florida. We bought this home nearly 10 years ago to be able to spend more time near our family. When not there ourselves, we love sharing the home. It's a great location, a warm environment, and the kayaks are just such a treat. The nearby islands are fantastic to explore. We've worked very hard to make the home enjoyable for our guests, and it is fully supplied with everything you should need. We also try to have laundry, dish and dishwasher detergent, tin foil, baggies,etc....all those sort of things you don't want to have to buy for a short stay. We also put in comfortable and quality bedding. It's a great house!!

Barbara purchased this house in 1998

Why Barbara chose Deer Isle - Stonington

Having grown up in Maine, but now living in Florida, I was homesick! So we bought a fixer upper and the whole family pitched in and helped us fully renovate this former 'lobsterman's family home'. With very few homes actually waterfront on Stonington Harbor, this home was ideal.

What makes this house unique

In actuality there aren't many homes directly on Stonington Harbor. This home is right on the harbor, and only a few minutes walk to downtown. And the dock is fantastic....we have 6 kayaks to use...plus we are purchasing more! This is the best location for kayaking out to the nearby islands. We have many return guests...so I guess they like it as much as we do!

Great views; Great location; Great Vacation Rental

If you want a true Down East experience, with access to the water, use of kayaks, and views of a working harbor that are exceptional, then this Victorian property is for you and your family. It is an easy walk to the town of Stonington, the lobster pound, and the boat to Isle au Haut. The house is unusually well stocked, and having a full sized washer and dryer was a plus for our party. We would come again.

The spectacular views from this quaint and comfortable home make every moment memorable. And when you decide you want to do more than watch the harbor activity - you can get in a kayak and become a part of it all! Stonington is a magical place and this well equipped home is right in the heart of the magic! Easy access to isle au haut ferry is a plus when you want to spend a day hiking Acadia.

Best view in town!!! And direct waterfront access and kayaks!

Such an amazing house - layout, location, amenities - all of it contributed to our relaxing and fun-filled family vacation. We visited with our 2 kids (3 and 5 years old) and their grandparents.

Kids loved running around the back deck/porch that wraps around half the house. Sunset dinners on the deck. Lobster feast with fresh lobsters from the lobster co-op - 2 lobster pots and as many shell crackers and pick you could need. Kayaking among the sleeping lobster boats at sunset with the gorgeous "Stonington light." Just sitting in the living room, facing the harbor, and watching the graceful action on the harbor - meditative.
Master suite is spacious and set apart from the other bedrooms which are located on the 2nd floor. Plenty of places in the house for sharing a family meal - in the dining room, the breakfast area, table on the back deck, picnic table on the dock.
And, plenty of places to kick back and relax around the house - reclining chairs on the back deck, daybed in the front of the house, comfy living room sofa, additional living room chairs.
All times of day are beautiful times of day at this house - don't miss the amazing stars in the night sky!

Walk to everything on Main Street including the excellent restaurant Aragosta. Two doors down from the Factory Tavern restaurant which makes it convenient to try to secure a last minute reservation. A few steps up the hill from the Isle Au Haut mailboat ferry to secure your 'first come, first served" ferry tickets in the morning. A short drive to Sand Beach (so much more than your typical beach - be sure to check it out), Barred Island (magical hike through moss carpeted woods to the island - go around low tide (+/- 3 hours), and take the kids to Nervous Nellie's - in addition to making and selling jam, there's entertaining and eccentric art on a life-sized scale. Also, a short drive to sailboat rentals (and other vessels) at Old Quarry Adventures. A short drive to Burnt Cove Market for groceries.

We spent 2 weeks in Stonington, the 2nd week in this house - could not have been better.
Make sure to take advantage of the kayaks - sunset is the best time of day - no traffic in the harbor, beautiful setting, seal spotting. Plenty of lifejackets provided for adults and kids.

We've stayed in many vacation rental houses over the years in different areas of the country for family vacations and this was definitely one of the best!

Week Long Vacation in Maine

  • 5 of 5
We used to live in New England and always loved Maine so my mom and dad, brother and his wife, and my family decided to make the 15 hour trip to this rental in Stonington. The pictures don't really do the rental justice. It has so much character and everything about it makes you feel like you are at home. My kids loved walking on the sea shell covered beach at low tide and finding new treasures every tide cycle. We tried kayaking for the first time and found a new sense of adventure. The little cove is perfect for getting your sea legs and the bay is perfect for when you get enough confidence to explore one of the many uninhabited islands within easy reach of the houses dock. Everyone in Stonington was great, the town is gorgeous and the farmers markets are great. We sampled many of the local goods including lots and lots of lobstah. Lobster is cheaper than a cheeseburger this year. I can't say enough good about the property. We hope to make it back in a couple of years.
Some basic questions you may have:
Q. Do we need to bring groceries with us?
A. No, food and other supplies were very reasonably priced and they had a very good selection at the Burnt Cove Market, plus you have several large chains only an hour away in Ellsworth. In fact we arrived at 6PM on a Sunday and were able to find and procure most of what we needed that evening.

Q. Linens?
A. All were provided and were very clean.

Q. Is there enough to do on Deer Isle for a week?
A. Yes, I could have easily stayed on the island for a week between biking, boating, walking, eating, drinking and fishing. However, if you do need a slightly faster pace for a day or two Bar Harbor is only a little over an hour away as is Ellsworth.

Authentic New England Vacation

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I celebrated our 21st anniversary with several members of our family at this lovely cottage. The views of the bay were stunning and our 4-year-old godson watched boats for hours. The house was well stocked with everything needed to do a live lobster boil and and a large dining room table accommodated all 7 of us for home cooked meals. There were several restaurants within walking distance and a secluded sand beach just minutes from the cottage. The Friday morning farmer's market was great fun and Acadia National Park was just 90 minutes drive. We hope to return again soon.

You may not want to leave this charming Victorian!

  • 5 of 5
This Stonington cottage provided a real get away! My mother, three sisters, and I spent a week here this summer and we rarely left Stonington. The cottage was cozy with a great view of the harbor. We didn't want for anything! The bedrooms were fine (though the twin mattresses could use replacing). We used the kayaks and life jackets...what a blast! The Four Seasons was superb and we had a good lunch at Harbor Cafe. The Whale's Rib Tavern in Deer Isle was also devine. We enjoyed cruising the islands and an educational lobster boat tour. We walked everywhere. The Opera House featured a great comedian, and tickets were only $5.00. The people were so friendly. Highly recommend and we want to return someday...
