I am a 4th generation West Virginian that wanted to build a remote Lodge near the National Forest.
We love the 'cool' temperatures of the mountains. We wanted property with no neighbors. We found it. Nearest neighbor 2 miles away. We began building in 1990, 4 years later we opened. Over the years we have made several improvements; more solar panels, hydro electric , trout pond, etc.. Love the WV mountains and you will too.
Entirely Off the Grid; Solar, Hydro and Wind Power the Lodge. Adjacent to a vast National Forest & Trail System. Amazing stars at night. No bugs. Really. Sit on the deck without getting 'eaten alive' as visitors to other vacation destinations will tell you. Very unique lodging experience.
When I first found this property on VRBO, I was intrigued with the seclusion and access to the National Forest right from the back of the property. We love to hike and being able to access hiking trails from the property was very important to us. The Lodge is definitely secluded but you can still drive less than 20 minutes and be in Hillsboro (a small town). The Lodge itself is stocked with all that you need to have a great stay. It seems that prior guests have left behind certain kitchen items for the next guests which resulted in a fully stocked kitchen. 2 refrigerators made it convenient for larger groups like ourselves. The house has a great pot belly stove that keeps the Lodge at a comfortable temp. The Lodge has plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. The owner, John, was very attentive without being intrusive. Since the Lodge generates its own power, he was very helpful in explaining how the house power is managed and we had no issues at all. A couple of phone conversations was all that we needed to figure everything out. He was always available if we needed him.
We had all kinds of weather while we there. Sunny, rain, cold, warm and snow. Each climate offered something. We had 6 inches of snow one day and that made for a great day of snowball fights, igloo making and sledding.
The views were spectacular and the sunrises incredible. We cannot wait to go back.
Every 4 years as a staff we try to get away and spend some time together thinking and talking about our future as an organization. This was our 3rd retreat and by far the best place we ever retreated to. We loved being completely secluded. No distractions other than 4 people getting lost in the woods for 4 hours. The home owner is wonderful to work with. Only possible draw back is it could use a new hot tub but trust me when I say even that did not distract from the experience. My problem now is getting the staff to wait 4 years for the next retreat. They keep suggesting we need an annual retreat. BTW, I have never given any place a 5 star rating before.
We just spent an entire week at Cranberry Lodge with our children and grandchildren and had a wonderful time. There were enough things to do in the area to keep everyone busy and happy. All ages enjoyed swimming in the Greenbrier river, hiking to the waterfalls and picking blueberries. The ranger at Droop Mt.Park was great with the teenagers. We loved Cranberry Lodge - it had plenty of space to gather as a family for meals and games and a nice fire pit area. There were a lot of earwigs around, and the gnats were bad during the day, but there were no mosquitoes or ticks that we found. The two bedrooms in the basement were musty and humid which made them uncomfortable. The other bedrooms and bathrooms were good sized and nice. The loft was perfect for the teenagers. Everything was well maintained and clean. We appreciated having two large refrigerators and plenty of freezer space. The kitchen was well stocked. We felt like the owner went out of his way to provide us with the things we needed to make our stay comfortable, from being available to answer questions, to providing inflatable boats for the pond and plenty of towels and linen. By the way, the pond was a great source of entertainment. The kids spent hours catching frogs and salamanders, We would have liked to avoid the trip down the mountain every time we went somewhere, but if you want to stay at the top of the mountain where it is cooler and there is a beautiful view, I guess that is the price. Make sure you have detailed directions to get to the Lodge before you go. THERE is NO VERIZON CELL PHONE coverage in Hillsboro or surrounding area. The Pretty Penny Restaurant in Hillsboro let us use their phone, and by the way, has great food.
We had a family reunion at CL, all of us really enjoyed the time spent at CL. It is truly off the grid! The views and the quiet are priceless! john is only a phone call away (house phone) and takes all the time you need to explain the workings of CL or to answer any questions you have. John supplied us with a list of attractions in the area which was very helpful. I would recommend this property as long as you are willing to be with out electronics!
I went up with 10 of my friends and we had a blast. The pictures online don't do the view justice and the owner was very accomodating. The elevation was high enough that it never got hotter than 75 and there are no biting insects, which are both huge and I had to actually experience it to believe it. I highly recommend.
Everything was as described and even better. The view was magnificent, the kitchen fully equipped, bedrooms comfortable, everything clean & attractive. Our group particularly enjoyed Bear Town & the waterfall. I would definitely recommend this lodge.
