Virgin Gorda Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Affordable 1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom Cottage with Ocean View

Mrs. Holder's Yellowbird Cottage is a charming West Indian style cottage located in a vibrant local neighborhood. Chickens, dogs, and the occasional goat roam throughout our sleepy neighborhood, and children playing ball in the street are a common sight. Nestled amongst a half acre garden, you can lounge on the large wrap around porch and look out at bougainvilleas, periwinkle flowers, and neem trees framing a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Trimmed in blue, our small one bedroom, one bath cottage is reminiscent of the traditional open and airy Caribbean homes, albeit with modern amenities. The cottage is decorated with local art, includes a full kitchen, a bath with a shower, and a king size bed (or two full size beds). The property is secluded and perfect for a single person or a couple who want to get away from the modern world, as there is no phone, TV, or internet (don't worry though- there is internet, TV, and phone access right down the road at the Yacht Harbor). So besides a weekly house cleaner who will come by to wash your sheets and towels and take out your trash this is a great place to get away from it all!

Virgin Gorda is a perfect place for the eco-tourist with scenic beaches, beautiful reefs, a national park full of local flora and fauna. Our property is a wonderful example of how a tourist destination can be self-sustaining and have a positive impact on the surrounding area.

Because all of the water on our property is supplied by the yearly rains, so we ask that no more than two adults stay at one time to help us conserve water.

The cottage is located in a local neighborhood in The Valley on the Atlantic side of Virgin Gorda. It is situated on top of a hill that overlooks Handsome Bay and has a great view of the ocean. Swimming in Handsome Bay is not recommended, but there are plenty of beaches nearby that you can get to on foot or by taxi. Right over the hill to the north is Savannah Bay, a stunning white sand beach with a large coral reef that is close to shore and easily accessible for snorkeling. Down the road is Spanish Town and the Yacht Harbor, where there is a grocery store, deli, snorkel and scuba shop, art gallery, and a few bars and restaurants. You can also rent a car or get a taxi and go to the south side of the island to visit Spring Bay, Devil's Bay, and the famous Baths. To get to the North Sound we recommend you rent a car and spend the day touring the beaches and restaurants.

If you are an independent traveler who is enticed by the flavor of staying in a local neighborhood; excited about the prospect of meeting locals; ok with getting lost and asking for directions; and want the seclusion our property brings then the Yellowbird cottage is exactly what you are looking for! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, as we would love to talk to you via email or over the phone!

A note about getting to Virgin Gorda: One of the most spectacular aspects of staying on Virgin Gorda is that it offers visitors a secluded vacation on an island with a small and vibrant community. The most daunting obstacle for people traveling to the BVI for the first time can be getting to Virgin Gorda, but it is not as hard as it might seem at first. There are multiple islands you can fly into (Puerto Rico, Tortola, St Thomas) that all offer charter planes and ferries to VG. Before you book your flights, contact us and we will give you a list of recommended companies to use, all based off 30 years of traveling to and from the island. We want your vacation to be as enjoyable as possible, and that includes getting onto and off the island, so however we can help we will!

All of our guests also receive our 'Holder's guide to the Valley on Virgin Gorda,' which has tons of useful information on the island and recommendations on local beaches, restaurants, bars, stores, and services.

I have been renting the cottage for over 20 years, relying mostly on return guests and word of mouth. In 1978 after my two children grew up my husband and I bought a plot of land overlooking Handsome Bay. Before we moved to Virgin Gorda we had run a small, private primary school in Colorado. Upon moving to Virgin Gorda our plan was to retire, but, instead we were approached by a philanthropist who wanted us to start a one room school for local children called the Valley Day School, which is still running to this day. At that point Virgin Gorda had no paved roads, grocery stores, or schools and over the past three decades I have watched the island grow into a vibrant, thriving community with a strong local culture.

Martha Holder purchased this cottage in 1986

My late husband and I fell in love with Handsome Bay and the surrounding community the moment we arrived in Virgin Gorda. The neighborhood was perfect for us because it was close to our school and in a local neighborhood. We built the main, two story house across the street first and that is where I have lived since 1978. For the cottage we decided to build something similar to the local houses, an open airy cottage with a large garden and a good view. You can still see a few of these houses around the island but most of them have been replaced by larger more modern homes.

The cottage gives visitors a unique opportunity to experience Virgin Gorda like a local. In Virgin Gorda we take care of each other and that is something you can feel the moment you walk out of the house and get a 'hello' from a passing neighbor or a honk of the horn from a friend. Virgin Gorda is a small island, but it is still possible to be completely cut off from the local flavor in one of the large resorts. Not everyone wants that, I know because we didn't when we moved down here 34 years ago. The cottage is a special place, a place where we have had return guests for over 20 years, a place where people feel at home and want to come back time and again.

The cottage is really charming. Marta came to pick my wife and I at the dock Friday evening. We had a quick dinner with her. She gave us a lot of information concerning this beautiful island. Being on this island for more than 30 years, she knows everybody ! The cottage is perfect for two. Everything you need is here. The only annoying point I will mention are the noisy dogs and roosters (not at the cottage) but to be fair it is quite difficult not to cross those dogs or chickens on the island. After 1 day you get used to it and this will not prevent us to come back one day hopefully ! So if you are looking for a nice and affordable place to stay on one of the most beautiful island in the Carribean sea, this is the perfect place. And you will also be able to feel truly the local atmosphere which will not be the case if you and stay in one of the fency and highly expensive resort.

A Husband's Review
  • 5 of 5
First, let me ask, how can a person visit Virgin Gorda and not fall in love? With the people, with the funky little bars and restaurants, with the beaches, sea and sun?

Second, how can a person stay in the Yellowbird and not fall in love? It's a laid-back gem of a place, nestled in a garden that alone is almost worth the cost of staying there. Seriously, I'd pitch a tent and still have an award-winning vacation.

For my wife and I, it was the perfect balance of seclusion and immersion...the kind of place that harks back to a Panamanian bungalow where you can imagine Hemingway swilling Caribbean rum and clattering away at a typewriter stationed on the dining table....meanwhile Gellhorn would be lounging porch-side, feet up on the little blue table, making edits in the margins of a soon to be submitted New York Times story.

What can I say? In some ways I'm a sucker for tradition, and since the first anniversary calls for a gift of paper, the idea of a plane ticket to a tropical destination was just too much to pass up. And as two people who met in an English class as starry eyed writers-to-be, the Yellowbird conjured EXACTLY the kind of real-life romance that a husband like myself was more than happy to take credit for.

In short, I would highly recommend the Yellowbird and Virgin Gorda as the optimal vacation spot. I write this review primarily for other husbands, like myself, who are looking for a getaway where relaxation will ACTUALLY occur, and where your wife will ACTUALLY stop being stressed and have the opportunity to see you for the charming chap that you ACTUALLY are all the time (if only dishes, kids and shoe-eating puppies weren't always making you look so sloppy and off your game).

Yellowbird looks like something that fell right out of your wife’s Pinterest board, but won’t break the bank. And lets face it gents, that will make you seem both sensitive and smart, a recipe that will ensure a great vacation for both parties.

This is not an unbiased review as we've stayed with our friends the Holders many times and keep returning. For us, this is the ideal spot. Immaculate and comfortable with a large yard offering total privacy. Well equipped kitchen helps make for a more economical stay. Located among homes of local Virgin Gordians,
the daylight hours are most peaceful for those afternoon naps in Caribbean breeze and reading after lunch in between beach trips. Some nights the dogs and roosters will start up so ear plugs are recommended for light sleepers.
This is a small island and while there are several restaurants you shouldn't go with the idea of going for fine dining at a different spot each night. Most smaller Caribbean islands are destinations for simple relaxing and sun and not so much for gourmet food. The small local markets offer a fairly wide selection compared with just a few years ago. Shop the local wholesale markets (open to everyone) for deals on wine and liquor.
Some folks make the mistake of booking mid winter trips to the Bahamas only to find the weather too cool for the beach. Go SOUTH!!! Virgin Gorda has the warm weather you're looking for. In our experience, the best places are often a bit harder to get to but the most rewarding.
I'm looking at those rotating idyllic screen saver pics that came on my iMac. Two of the photos are Virgin Gorda beaches. Need I say more?

Yellowbird cottage was a fantastic experience. The cottage itself was breezy and comfortable, and it was never too hot even in mid August. Sitting on the porch and enjoying the view of the garden and hearing the sounds of the neighborhood was a perfect backdrop for reading or relaxing after a long swim. I didn't rent a car but had no problem exploring the island. Taxis were cheap. At the first beach I went to, I was able to follow a sea turtle, at a distance, through the reefs. Absolute magic.
