About Bernie Carver

Although we both have lived in other parts of the world for extended periods, we have deep roots in Springfield. We recently left for Massachusetts to be close to children and grandchildren. We hope others will enjoy being at Purple Awning House as much as we do.

Bernie Carver purchased this house in 1988

Why Bernie Carver chose Springfield

Sally purchased the house as a single mom thinking that it would be a good place to raise her two children. Her strategy worked because they both became wonderful, successful adults. We have our many fond memories of our old house and love the neighborhood.

What makes this house unique

Purple Awning House combines the advantages of being in a city and open space. Lincoln Park is a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors, yet you can get grocery stores and restaurants with a short walk.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you both for sharing your home with us. We had a wonderful stay, and most definitely would want to stay there again when we return to Springfield. The Lincoln museum was spectacular and I need to return to catch all of what I did not have time to see. Doug was great at getting us in and seeing us off. I think our dog will miss the place most of all. She was spoiled by numerous walks at the beautiful park across the street. All in all, we had a great time, just too short. hopefully a longer stay next time. Thank You again for your hospitality!!

Great location, Great price!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time and throughly enjoyed our stay at the Purple Awning house. The home was perfect for the 5 of us and conveniently located to Lincoln park & all the Lincoln exhibits. It was also really nice to have a kitchen and extra rooms verses staying in a hotel. Bernie (owner) & Doug (property manager) were so helpful and kind to work with....they responded promptly with any questions we had. Thank you so much for opening up your home. We certainly hope to get that way again!!

Comfortable, character-filled home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Lovely location, gorgeous artwork, very clean, all amenities provided, excellent and welcoming manager: all the conveniences of home. We are US ex-pats that rented this home in our "home-town." It served as a lovely home base and all of our visitors were impressed with the house itself and the lovely setting across from gorgeous Lincoln Park. Thanks for the lovely hospitality! We will see you again!

Charming, Comfortable, Homey

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Purple Awning house while attending a Ship reunion for my dad who served in WWII. We were able to have several of us, and our dogs, all stay in this comfy house where we were able to entertain and socialize with others from the reunion in the comfy little yard. The beautiful park was a great place for walking and sites like the Lincoln Memorial were just up the road. We will definitely keep this home in mind any time we are passing through Springfield. Thank you!

Cozy home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

My young children and I stayed at the Purple Awning while visiting friends in Springfield. It was great to have a place I could put my kids to bed and down for naps while my friends were visiting. Also, to work out some of that 3 year old energy we just ran (look both ways) across the street to the park and kept running! My daughter had so much fun running through the park, rolling down the hills and playing on the play ground. Not to mention how great and convenient it was to have a kitchen to store our food and make my family some meals. I had another friend staying in town and suggested next time she stay here. The price is the same as a hotel and there is much more room to spread out! Looking forward to our next visit! Is the 10th time free? Thanks again!

Fabulous Stay- Highly recommend for singles, couples, or families.

We stayed at the Purple Awning for 4 days during an ecological agriculture conference. The place offered an affordable, quiet, and warm place for us to come home to and rest. As ecological farmers we are very conscious about what we put in our body and what food industries to support (if we have too). The kitchen allowed us to avoid eating out all week and provided us with an opportunity to feed others healthy food while attending the conference. Having a space away from the meetings had numerous other incentives like bringing like-minded groups together for exciting discussion. Not to mention the view of beautiful old oak trees right out the living room window to gaze into, was priceless. It was especially spectacular after receiving a 4" snowfall.

The owner and local manager were friendly and very accommodating. They kindly answered all questions and tended to any concerns we had (like possibly staying another night to avoid driving in the snow). The house was full of cleaning supplies, towels, toilet paper and blankets which was also a pleasure, since we did not have to run out to grab any essentials we may not have thought to bring.

If I lived closer to Springfield and needed a get away, I would certainly take weekends to just enjoy the quiet and welcoming space! If I'm ever passing through I'll book it!

Thanks again. Blessings and Health to the Purple Awning crew!

Anyone who cares about American history should visit the The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. It is a national treasure that has consistently been the most visited presidential museum since it opened in 2005. Our area has much more to offer Civil War and history buffs - Lincoln's Home, Lincoln's Tomb, New Salem State Park, two historic State Capitol buildings, just to name a few. Frank Loyd Wright's Dana Thomas House and the National Museum of Surveying are other gems that visitors should not miss. As you may surmise, visiting all these great places takes some time. Visitors should plan on spending at least two or three days to experience our town.

Purple Awning House is across the street from 88 acres of open space at Lincoln Park, one of Springfield’s oldest and most popular parks. Sports oriented facilities at the park include: trails for walking, running, or cycling, a soccer field, 2 disc golf courses, 3 tennis courts, 3 shuffleboard courts, 6 ball diamonds, and 21 horseshoe courts. The Nelson Recreation Center contains an outdoor swimming pool , 2 indoor ice rinks and Junior Blues Hockey games.

Make this “party headquarters” for your next family celebration or business meeting. Reasonably priced venues for weddings, showers or business meetings are within walking distance at Lincoln Park Pavilion or Edwards Place. The bridge at Lincoln Park Lagoon is a very popular location for outdoor weddings and wedding pictures. Benedictine University, the Brinkerhoff Home and public transportation are less than a block away from Purple Awning House.
