Hi; Bobby here. I'm a Northern Virginia transplant to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia! Sixteen years ago we purchased a weekend cabin near Harpers Ferry in the mountains (Shannondale) with a 50 mile view of the Shenandoah Valley below. We fell in love with this beautiful area and wonderful local people, and it didn't take long to switch from weekenders to permanent residents! I quickly developed a fascination with the historic old cedar cabins nestled all over this mountain - Sears kits from the 40s and 50s. 'Terrapin' is the 3rd cottage I've refurbished and transformed from trash to treasure - an artist's delight! You will enjoy seeing the photo album on site of 'before' and 'after' pictures. Please take a look at my other two cottages, also listed on vrbo - 'Moonridge' and 'The Inn at Long Last'. For a number of years, the cottage was a standard rental, and I recently decided to convert it to a vacation rental because of the huge pleasure derived from the incredible guests from all over the world who visit my other two cabins. Thus, 'Terrapin' was created! Come, relax, and enjoy, and let me pamper you a bit!
Bobby Ericsson purchased this cabin in 2004
I love the natural beauty of this area, the wildlife, the cultural heritage, the history, the quaint little towns, plus we're only an hour from Fairfax, Va., so even though we feel really remote, there is easy access to the big city. It's really the best of all worlds!
I think you will enjoy - as I do - making the half hour trek up to the Appalachian Trail, whether just for an hour or two or a day hike into historic Harpers Ferry. I highly recommend the 'Maryland Heights' hike to the top of the mountain where you will have an incredible view of the town of Harpers Ferry and the two rivers - Shenandoah and Potomac - merging. This is a half day round trip hike atop the mountain that the Amtrak train tunnels through, on its way to DC and beyond. See my photos at this listing for the view from the top!
For the less hearty, a short hike to 'Jefferson Rock' right in the midst of historic Harpers Ferry will allow you to share the view that Thomas Jefferson said was 'worth a trip across the ocean' to see! Or ~ spend a day at the Charles Town races and slots and be sure to visit the incredible 'Terrace Restaurant' where you will have the perfect terraced view of the horse races, including a monitor at your table for closer observation and a buffet that you will long remember!
This is a highly charming cottage in the woods. It is full of pretty wooden detail and nice furnishings/ decor inside, including a central wood fireplace set on brick tiles. There are little lamps and candles all around for a really cozy feel. Large windows reveal the woods, adding to the mountain charm. The pictures do not quite capture how cute it is. It is also fully stocked in the kitchen and bathrooms. Bobby was a very good host.
We had a wonderful time at the cabin and in the surrounding area! It was nice to come "home" to the cozy cabin after all day excursions! We were thrilled with the location, close enough for a day in DC or Anteitum..restaurants, shopping all the things you look for on vacation! Thank you to Bobby for helping with last minute reservations and advise! We look forward to our next visit whenever it may be!
Great place to stay. Quite. I have sever allergies, all products used we safe for me!
This rustic home offers a spacious living room and kitchen. The deck is very inviting for that special Family barbecue. The Charles Town races are close & my Family and I were able to attend the Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival that week-end. Bobby is an excellent hostess; leaving us homemade bread and a Kristian Regale Pear Sparkling Juice Beverage and dropping by to say hello as she lives in the area & is very friendly & helpful with information of the area. The owners' photos are as the property appears. I had three Family members meeting me there. All had travelled many miles and we all found the property. Pay attention to Bobby's written e-mail instructions as the smart phones and gps' have some work to do unless you are familiar with the area. We viewed a Mama Deer eating on the front lawn daily. Each time we would go on an outing & return we felt like we were back home. The Master Bedroom and bath offer privacy and the other bedroom plus den have comfortable beds with a lovely restroom across the hall. The laundry was very convenient. It was a very enjoyable Family reunion. I would highly recommend this to folks looking to get away from the motel/hotel scene. Groceries can be picked up locally. It was a pleasure doing business with Bobby. We did take in Harper's Ferry with the wonderful views. That is a beautiful park and town. It offers dog friendly venues for those that hike with their best friends . Happy Trails! :-)All those miles were worth it, what a wonderful stay! A Couple of paintings hanging on the walls were done by the proprietor herself. Beautiful artistry.........................
Privacy and spectacular views at the Harper's Ferry Park and convenience of being close to the many happenings was a breath of fresh air and relaxation. The cabin was clean and very creatively decorated. The large yard would welcome pet owners.
We enjoyed our stay here and even with a dog and toddler there was plenty of room for all of us. We appreciated the stash of toys and kids books for our son to play with and found that we didn't have too much trouble babyproofing the place either. The cabin was charmingly decorated and the kitchen was set up nicely for any cooking we did. Bobby was very responsive and could be reached by phone or email. Even though we arrived during a rainy time the cabin was cozy and bright. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice mountain getaway.
The cabin was great...clean and everything a cabin should be with a great view of wildlife on a daily basis...the owner is great and very helpful to make your stay the best it can be...the cottage had plenty of room for the four of us....this vacation was overall a great experience and would come here again anytime....
We're the naturalists paradise - located below the Appalachian Trail, near Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers (the 2 merge at Harpers Ferry), some of the best white water rafting in the US, zip lines down the mountain!
