The Town of Taos is well known as an art center and Taos Ski Valley for it's world class skiing. Casita Truchas is ideally located between the two! The Casita is in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which is the southernmost part of the Rocky Mountains, in a rural location covered in trees. Being in the foothills as they rise up to the peaks means we have fabulous views of the mountain ranges surrounding the vast valley centered by the Rio Grange Gorge, in which Taos and Taos Pueblo are located. All four seasons are beautiful and unique at Casita Truchas. Taos has both Spring and Fall Arts Festivals and are the quieter seasons, but offer many natural beauties. Winter comes with wonderful skiing only 20 minutes away and Summer is perfect for activities or relaxation. Both are readily available at Casita Truchas. The golf course is about a half hour drive away on the south side of Taos and one of it's major attractions are the views back to Casita Truchas!

Further details for this vacation house rental in Taos, New Mexico

Wonderful, dramatic sunsets and 60 mile views from the Casita encompass the Truchas (Trout Peaks), Picuris and Jemez Mountain ranges. To the south, the twinkling lights of Taos shine in the night. Our 850 sq. ft. Guest House is near, yet very separate from, our private home. The Casita contains living room with gas fireplace, dining area with table for 4, modern fully equipped kitchen (with dishwasher, microwave and lots of small appliances) and one bath with extra-large shower. The Casita sleeps 2-4 with a private bedroom with romantic queen canopy bed and a day bed and trundle in the sitting area off the living room. There is a deck with private Hot Tub with views of the mountains and of course, the Casita is equipped with washer & dryer, Satellite TV/VCR, Stereo/CD and telephone with answering machine. This is a non-smoking property. Smoking outside only please.

Since the ½ mile private gravel road on which we are located, can be snowy in winter (we hope it will be anyway!), 4 wheel drive vehicles are preferred during ski season, although front wheel drive is usually just fine. In Summer any vehicle is just fine. Activities: Downhill and cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, golf. Gallery browsing, shopping, museums, arts & crafts festivals, Native American Dances & ceremonials. Art workshops, Music Festivals, Wine Tastings and best of all: just relaxing! Area: Casita Truchas is located in a very quiet neighborhood as there are only a few neighbors. All the houses around are on 3+ acres and the land is covered in pinon and juniper trees. We are on the slope of the mountains as they rise up, which is why you look out over the trees to the views.

The views are of the Jemez Mountains about 60 miles away (highlighted by the sparkling lights of Los Alamos), of the Truchas Peaks about 45 miles away and of the sweep of the Taos Valley (including the Town of Taos) and the Rio Grande Gorge where the Rio Grande River cuts through this broad expanse. Casita Truchas is at 8,000 feet and the town of Taos (10 miles away) is at 6,900 feet. The base of Taos Ski Valley is at 9,200 feet, about 10 miles away in the other direction. The Casita is about 20-25 yards from the main house, and it's very separate with it's own parking area and entry. Because of the slope of the land you drive into the Casita's parking area at the front door level and it's a one story building. On the other side of the building however, the long view side, it's 2 story and our garage is on the lower level, which is grade level at that point. The mountain views to the other side, to the North and East, are closer mountain views and they are wonderful too.

Other Activities: hiking

A Fantastic Vacation House

Taos Lover St. Paul, MN
Review Submitted: August 22, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We rented this Casita Truchas for our summer vacation 2009. During our 10 days stay, I couldn't describe how happy we are. Every night, we sat in the hot tub, watching the moon rise from behind the mountains. One night, we watched Milky Way and shooting stars. I don't remember when was last time I have had such experience. My son, who is thirteen years old, rated this is one of our best vacations. There are so many friendly humming birds outside the house. On our first day, a few humming birds came into the house. Everyday we explored the surroundings. There are so much to do. We did rock-climbing at the Taos Ski Valley, White water rafting, hiking at the Tao's SKi Valley, swimming in the Rio Grande and the hot springs. The best part for me was the Taos Chamber Music festival. I would go back just for that and for many other things. The overall experience was great.
Owner's Response: Thanks guys. Hope to see you again.

Great spot

michael_in_ithaca Ithaca NY
Review Submitted: June 14, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We had a great time at Casita Truchas. It's very quiet and private, but it's a short drive to Arroyo Seco where you can get meals or shop. It's within easy reach of spectacular mountains and gorges. The cabin is well away from the bustle of Taos, but when you want to do something in town (and can't do it in Arroyo Seco) it's an easy and pleasant drive.

The cabin itself is very spacious and comfortable, and the hot tub is great after a long hike. Everything was well-maintained -- there were none of the little annoyances I usually run into at hotels.

Highly recommended.

Wonderful Casita with Fantastic Views!

Tsvete New York City, NY, USA
Review Submitted: May 28, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We stayed in Casita Truchas in the middle of May. We really wanted to escape the stress of New York City, we love nature, we love New Mexico, we wanted to find a nice and quiet place and we were very lucky to find Casita Truchas. The Casita is very cozy and well appointed and only a short drive from Taos. We were so comfortable there - it is amazing how much detail was put into it, and we really felt like we were at home, only Casita Truchas was a much more peaceful home.
The outdoor deck is great for taking the views in and observing the birds, and especially the hummingbirds!
Steve is a fantastic host and so friendly! Steve, if you come to NYC, come and hang out with us!
I would highly recommend Casita Truchas to anyone, but especially to nature enthusiasts!

I'd LOVE to keep this my own little secret, but...

mellow gulf coast, TX
Review Submitted: March 22, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
the casita is truly everything as described AND then some. I don't know how this little place could possibly be improved on, Peter, Susan, and Steve seem to have thought of everything.
my family always enjoys our time in Arroyo Seco, up at the ski valley and hiking. the casita actually added to our experience, we even spent a day just hanging out there, to enjoy its 'experience'. This trip was myself (mom) my son and one friend of his, the casita was perfect for three.
It is set up as a great place for a romantic getaway, or for 4 people who travel well together.
