Lutsen Lakehouse - The ideal choice for a premier, private North Shore haven of rest. (Available year-round.)
NOTE: BEFORE MAKING AN INQUIRY, PLEASE READ THE FIRST 5 NUMBERED PARAGRAPHS BELOW.
'The heavens declare the glory of God and the earth shows His handiwork.' Reserve your stay at Lutsen Lakehouse and you will experience this verse from the Book of Psalms as Lake Superior's thundering waves crash against the ledgerock shoreline, northern lights dance across the sky, the call of a loon ricochets over the water, and a full moon rises over the big lake they call Gitchigummi. And that's just the view outside.
Inside you will appreciate the comforts of a beautiful, professionally cleaned home: sleep soundly in a first-floor master suite with jetted bath, unwind by a soothing fire in the massive wood-burning fieldstone fireplace, relax in the cedar sauna, and savor a meal in the fully equipped kitchen complete with Sub-Zero fridge and Weber grill.
Enjoy all this and be just a few minutes from Lutsen Ski Resort, Superior Hiking Trail, Superior National Golf Course, and North Shore cross-country ski trails.
Lutsen Lakehouse -- The creation of God without; the comfort of home within.
1. OCCUPANCY: Maximum home occupancy is six persons. Two members of your group must be over 35 years old, and children should be 12 years old or above. When emailing us an inquiry, please share a little about your group (who you are, where you are from, etc.), including the ages of any children.
2. AVAILABILITY: The availability calendar is updated regularly. Minimum stay is three nights. We speak with all potential renters on the phone to make sure the house will be a good fit for you and us.
3. RATES: The rate is the same for three to six guests. Our Just for Two rate (i.e. two guests only) is $50/night off the current rate. We offer a 5% discount for rentals of 6 - 9 nights and a 10% discount for rentals of 10 or more nights (weekly rate represents a 7-night rental). There are no additional charges besides tax.
4. PAYMENT: We will email you a first invoice for half the total rent after you reserve your dates and a second invoice for the balance a couple weeks before your rental date. Payments are made with personal check. We will also send you a basic rental agreement to sign. A credit card number is held in case of damage or breach of rental agreement.
5. PETS: Unfortunately we do not allow pets due to guests with pet allergies.
HISTORY: The home was built in 1994, has been owned by our family since 1999, and is available for respectful renters seeking a quiet, North Shore retreat. You will find pictures, poems, and other items around the house that represent our family and Christian faith.
LOCATION: Lutsen Lakehouse is conveniently located about one mile east of 'downtown' Lutsen and about 2 miles east of Lutsen Ski Resort. Grand Marais is located 17 miles east of the house and Tofte 10 miles west. Duluth, MN is 90 miles down the shore to the west.
PRIVACY: The home has lots of privacy on 200' of Lake Superior coastline. There is no home on the neighboring property to the west and plenty of distance and trees from a home on the neighboring property to the east. There is also ample buffer (~500') between the home and North Shore 61 with a short service road (Pedersen Lane) and long driveway.
LAKESHORE: The home sits very close to Lake Superior (about 75 feet away) with easy access to water's edge. The ledgerock shoreline is perfect for walking, campfires, or just sitting and enjoying the view.
VIEW: The home is designed around the dramatic southerly view of Lake Superior. All bedrooms (master bedroom downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs) have wonderful views of the lake. Watch the waves crash on shore or iron ore boats sliding along the horizon.
BEDROOMS and BATHROOMS: The house has three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms and a good-sized loft with digital keyboard. The master bedroom downstairs has a queen-sized bed. The attached master bath has a large shower and separate bath tub with jets. The two upstairs bedrooms each have two twin beds. There is a half bathroom upstairs and a full bathroom with large cedar sauna downstairs.
LIVING ROOM, DINING ROOM, KITCHEN: All three rooms are open and inter-connected. The LIVING ROOM extends out from the center of the home with views out and up the shore in both directions. A massive wood-burning fieldstone fireplace sits opposite the windows (complimentary split firewood is available for guests). The DINING ROOM has a large, round wood table perfect for family times together. The KITCHEN is fully equipped with Sub-Zero fridge, gas and electric stove, two ovens, toaster, coffee maker, griddle, waffle iron, popcorn popper, microwave, full cookware (stainless steel), dishware, and silverware, dishwasher, and a large island with two stools. A complete list of kitchen items is available upon request.
DECKS: A large deck extends off the upstairs west bedroom and a large covered deck with a Weber grill sits off the kitchen and dining room area. There is also a deck that runs along the entire lakeside (south side) and west side of the house with a large table and chairs.
AUDIO/VISUAL: There is a 32' flat screen television (with 2 HDMI inputs) in the living room with satellite TV (Direct TV) and DVD and VHS players. The sound system plays CD's, cassettes, FM/AM radio, and has a port to plug in your portable audio device (you'll need to bring your own 1/8' male-to-male cable).
INTERNET: Free WiFi is available in the home.
WASHER/DRIER: We store our personal items in the laundry room, so while the home does have a washer/drier, it is not available to guests. A laundromat is available one mile west in Lutsen. For extended stays, clean linens and towels can be arranged with our cleaning staff.
SUN/MOON: The home faces almost due south so lots of sunlight pours in during the day. Watching the moon rise over the lake is always a memorable moment.
WILDLIFE: Be ready to see white-tailed deer walk through the yard, bald eagles soar overhead, and loons call on Lake Superior. If you're a little more fortunate, you may even see a timber wolf.
NON-OVERNIGHT GUESTS: Only members of your group are allowed in the home. Parties and excessive alcohol consumption are prohibited.
DIRECTIONS AND KEY: Given upon reservation along with detailed instructions for using everything in the home. Our cleaning and caretaking staff live very close to the home in case there are any problems during your stay.
Dad and Mom started our family's love affair with the North Shore when they took their honeymoon up to Lake Superior and the Gunflint Trail way back in 1954.
In the 1990's, we started taking regular trips up the North Shore, staying in various rental houses from Lutsen to Grand Marais. And then in 1999, we finally found a beautiful home to call our own right on Lake Superior just down the road from Lutsen. We call it 'Lutsen Lakehouse'. The house has been and continues to be a special home away from home for us.
Dad and Mom have four children and now six grandchildren ... fifteen in all in the family. All of us love to head up to 'the cabin' (usually not at the same time!) to hike and ski and take canoe trips into the Boundary Waters. Most of all though, we love sitting by a roaring fire and staring out at the many moods of Lake Superior.
We rent the home in a limited fashion and enjoy sharing Lutsen Lakehouse with others who appreciate the home and the North Shore as we do. I, David, the youngest, have been given the responsibility of coordinating rentals and would look forward to talking with you about staying at our home. We have many fond memories from our times there and hope you can visit and make some too!
The Wheaton Family
David purchased this house in 1999
We have been renting our home to respectful renters since 2007 but have just listed the home on VRBO.com and HomeAway.com in the summer of 2012. You can read renter reviews from our original listing site at the following link: http://www.vacationhomerentals.com/vacation-rentals/Lutsen-Minnesota-vacation-rental-home-proID-19410.html
Lutsen Lakehouse is for someone who wants more peace and quiet than the resort experience. The accommodations were wonderful and perfect for anyone wanting to ski or snowmobile. The place is meticulously cared for and well appointed. You feel comfortable and at-ease. Everything is there to make a meal, take a sauna, listen to the waves hit the ledge rock, or build a fire after a day on the slopes or trails. The owners and caretakers go out of their way to make sure your stay is as expected, including a couple of check-ins to make sure things were going well for us. The owners take great pride in this beautiful place, so it's for someone willing to treat it as if it were their own. Our stay was invigorating, enjoying the fellowship of friends and family.
We had an amazing week at Lutsen Lakehouse. We enjoyed the view (the full moon and the reflection on the water, the stars, the loons, the waves - beautiful) and were in awe of God's creation. The house is nicely furnished and well equipped. We cooked/grilled more of our meals than we planned to because it was so comfortable and the view from the table couldn't be beat!!
It was perfect place to spend weekend. Weather was plus. We like the scenery right from living room. Best part was to take cup of coffee in morning and sit beside lake on rocks.
This home is very well-cared for, very comfortable, and beautifully set on the shore of Lake Superior, close to hiking trails, restaurants, and North Shore tourist attractions. There were three couples in our group, and we enjoyed sweet fellowship together with space and time for solitude as well. We spent time in Grand Marais, hiking at Temperance River, viewing the end of ski season at Lutsen Mountain. Meals "out" at Lutsen Resort, The Angry Trout, and Cojo Cafe at Blue Fin were supplemented by breakfasts and meals "in" and a campfire with roasted marshmallows on the ledge rock in front of the home. Lots of games, relaxing with some good movies, singing and sharing about our lives. Couldn't have been better!
The house surpassed our expectations. We have been coming to the North shore for years and this was the best lodging experience we have had. Extreme privacy. Beautiful views. Steve, the caretaker, was excellent and prompt. Truely hated to leave. Would have liked a king bed in the master bedroom but a minor issue. We will be back.
Lutsen lakehouse – one word to describe it – “Amazing”! We are from the Toronto, Canada area and were visiting the Twin cities for our summer vacation – we have never visited Minnesota before. As a last minute anniversary surprise to my wife, I decided to search online for a cottage rental near our stay and discovered the Lutsen lakehouse.
Based on the description and pictures, immediately I knew this was the perfect place for a vacation for my family and luckily for us the dates available fitted our schedule perfectly. Mind you this was only 1 week before our departure from Toronto and I was not sure if I could put it all together in such short time. I contacted David, who was very accommodating and he worked with me. After one phone call and a few emails back and forth, we were booked.
As many others have already mentioned, the Lutsen lakehouse was even better than the description given in the online ad. It was extremely warm, spacious and inviting and best of all well maintained – you could tell from all the little touches around the house that it was a very special place for family gatherings. It had all the amenities (fireplace, full kitchen, 3 bathroom, sauna, entertainment system with satellite TV, WIFI and Weber grill) that one could ever want – all you had to do was bring your own food and drinks. My family with wife and 4 teens (2 girls, 2 boys) had plenty of space to chill on their own without ever feeling crowded. The views of Lake Superior could not have been better with windows in each and every room.
Although we were only there for 3 nights (4 days), we made it a point of doing a lot of things recommended by David. We all managed to hike up Oberg trail (2.5km) with amazing views, swim under the falls (at least the kids were brave enough) at Caribou Falls and visit Grand Marais, where we picked up these tasty and freshly made donuts at the “Best Donuts in the World” shop and had lunch at the Angry Trout restaurant. The town itself is a must see for anyone visiting the area. One evening, we had an opportunity to make a campfire on the ledger rocks in front of the house with the kids roasting marsh mellows, hotdogs and making smores – that was a magical evening.
I would highly recommend this place for anyone that is considering a visit to the North Shore of Superior. My family truly enjoyed our stay and look forward to our next visit.

There are several area guide books in the house to help you plan your days.
