We stayed in Estrella, house of the Stars for a month. We did not have a car and had no trouble getting to wherever we wanted to go for whatever we wanted to procure. Los Cedros is midway between Montezuma and Cabuya, about 2 miles in each direction. The bus runs hourly throughout the day. You are close enough, and yet far enough away. Perfect!!
To paint a bit of a picture for you: The sun sets, scents of ylang-ylang wafts, the howler monkeys roar, the coatis and agoutis wander through the exotic garden. You can dine by candlelight on the exquisite veranda and not hear anything but the sounds of the creatures and the breezes through the tall trees surrounding the lush garden...The darkness envelopes (if you wish) uninterrupted; constellations shine huge and brilliant in the sky overhead.
And we haven't even gotten to the house yet, which is a perfection of artistic flourishes. We have been here a month and continue to discover and delight in them. Patricia and Simone have gathered shells, driftwood, stones... and arranged them all about as handles, towel racks, etc. Wooden bowls for the fruit and vegetables to display them to advantage.
You will be greeted by a huge floral bouquet of tropical blooms. The queen bed is very comfortable, flanked by bed tables of artistic wood chunks. The bathroom is a marvel on all levels. The lighting can be high or low, depending on your needs. The kitchen has everything necessary to prepare gourmet meals. We would walk to Vim's, the local renowned fisherman, and they would be coming in with the day's catch just off the boat: lobster, shrimp, mahi-mahi, red snapper. Estrella has an oven! A rarity in this area, so use it to advantage if you are cooking.
If not, you can go to Marvin's a local eatery for the casada; the Bakery in Cabuya is just beyond for an incredible smoothie and fish sandwich. Everything is great.
Waterfalls and lagoons abound in easy walking distance. I want to tell you that you will be so pleased that you selected to stay in Estrella.
If you are wondering if Estrella is the place for you to stay...this...is...it! The moment you are greeted from the most accommodating owners ever, Patricia and Simon, you will find this place to be everything you hoped it would be and more! We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and any worries we might have had were unnecessary. We found Estrella and the lovely area of Montezuma to be absolutely perfect. The accommodations were superior, totally private, safe, spotlessly clean, comfortable, and full of amazing detail and beauty. Patricia and Simon have created a dream-like peaceful place where you can come to just relax. Features like elegant teak ceilings, thick mahogany countertops, tile floors, fully equipped kitchen, accent lighting, artful lighting fixtures, WiFi, and a ceiling fan over a comfortable bed made our stay that much more enjoyable. The front porch with the hammock and the perfect spot for morning coffee added to the delight. Having the choice of a fun, private outdoor shower in your own banana grove become a daily pleasure.
The landscaping, flowers, trees and plants were delightful and we enjoyed the butterflies and hummingbirds that were attracted to them. The sandy beaches (Los Cedros) nearby were beautiful, virtually private (since there were very few other people) and we were mesmerized by the blue waves of the Pacific Ocean. Special thanks goes to Patricia and Simon for kindly sharing helpful information, supplying us with a hand-drawn personalized map, providing a list (with photos) of local wildlife, coaching us about the taxis and local bus schedule, making sure our stay was enjoyable, and providing us with great opportunities to see (and photograph) the monkeys, iguanas, coatis, agoutis, and more! It was a unique experience getting to see and hear the howler monkeys from our own private paradise. We felt right at home and appreciated Patricia and Simon’s extra help in obtaining a taxi for us the day of our departure. We would definitely go back and would have stayed longer if given the opportunity. We truly enjoyed this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you Patricia and Simon!

We arrived after dark, and Simon was waiting to welcome us. The house exceeded our expectations. The grounds are lovely, and you will see agoutis and coatis roaming the garden at all times of the day. At night, we were visited by a trio of raccoons. We heard howler monkeys every day, and spotted them in the trees surrounding the house. There are lots of wildlife around without having to go anywhere. The house is well located midway between Montezuma and Cabuya. It was clean and well maintained. Patricia and Simon are very warm, thoughtful, and gracious hosts. They gave us lots of tips and suggestions and were a key component in making our stay a memorable one. We highly recommend this home and would come back in a heartbeat!
We are frequent travelers to the Montezuma area (5 trips in the past 3 years). We have stayed at a number of vacation rentals during those trips and I have to say, nothing has compared to this home! From the moment you drive through the beautiful gates, you are captivated by the sounds of the jungle and beauty of the meticulously landscaped grounds. Then you walk a short distance to the path to the house and you instantly know that you are about to embark on a wonderful, peaceful, relaxing vacation.
The house is decorated with stunning, artistic touches throughout. The attention to detail is phenomenal and makes one feel right at home. The house was the perfect size for my partner and myself. The front deck is amazing and a great place to have your coffee or tea in the morning, as nature unfolds in front of your eyes. We loved the back area of the house as well and we found it to be the perfect place to sip wine as the sun set.
You can count on hearing and seeing howler monkeys, delight over the visiting agoutis in the mornings, and gaze at the abundance of butterflies and hummingbirds that visit the flowering vines close to the house. All in all, you will NOT be disappointed. You can also walk to a great beach nearby and swim in the waves or watch the handful of surfers doing their thing.
As far as comfort, the bed is ultra comfy (I think it was a pillow top), and there is a fan above the bed which keeps you very comfortable at night. The kitchen is awesome and well equipped. There is a desk for your computer and the wifi works great! The closet behind the bed was perfect and well lit with natural light. If we could live in this house, we would in a heartbeat!
There aren't enough superlatives to describe Estrella.
Physically the cottage is right out of Architectural Digest but with no pretense whatsoever. Plaster walls, teak ceilings, mahogany countertops, and the ever-important ceiling fan over the very comfortable bed. The kitchen is simple and very functional, with nice plates, cookware, etc. The place is elegantly appointed and really designed with the traveler in mind, from the Wi-Fi to the small safe to keep your passports in. Not that we ever felt remotely unsafe--on the contrary, we felt sequestered in our own little world.
One little story: My wife and I (this was our honeymoon) went on the two-hour hike through the nearby Cabo Blanco nature reserve to the beautiful beach there (a worthwhile trip if you don't mind exercise). We saw some monkeys, coatimundis and lots of birds. Also beautiful trees and awesome gnarly vines. But at the end of the day we both agreed that every day there was as much or more wildlife surrounding our home--howler and capuchin monkeys, parrots, etc.--as there was for us to see at Cabo Blanco. Plus all the cool iguanas and other lizards wandering around.
The beach at Los Cedros is great. Simon and Patricia were perfect hosts. If you are looking for an experience of ease, relaxation, and elegance at an affordable price, this is your place.
My husband and I were so lucky to have stayed at House Estrella during our first time in Costa Rica. We researched more remote areas for our stay, as we wanted to escape the daily pressures of life in L.A. and indulge in nature. The house location was great, off the beaten path..literally..tucked into it's own little jungle. We had all types of visitors: howler monkeys, raccoons, spider monkeys, etc etc. If you are looking to indulge in beach activities there are plenty in the area. The local beach, Los Cedros, was our favorite as the waters were calm and not crowded at all. The house itself is stunningly clean and very comfortable. After our long days hiking around or out exploring it was nice to come "home" too.
The owners Patricia and Simon were a major plus for us, as we love local recommendations. They provided us with a very useful hand drawn map of the area including bus times, restaurant recommendations, markets, sites to see and beaches. Since we didn't have a specific plan it was perfect for us to plan out our days according to what was local.
We are very thankful for our decision to travel to this area, as we heard other airport travelers complaining about their destinations being too "touristy" or "americanized". House Estrella is a true peaceful and quiet gem in the jungle!
