A great place to stay
The unit is a spacious (about 1500 sq ft) 2 bedroom unit right on the ground floor (3 story complex) with a large screened-in lanai, a large master bedroom with a king bed, a large walk-in shower and all the appliances you need. Looks like you get free internet and long distance phone calls. Not too many people walk by the lanai so it is quite private. It's close to Ali'i Drive, but it is still quiet. The unit is not air conditioned, but we did not ever need it (every day it was 80F high, and 70F low). The unit has beach towels, boogie boards, tennis racquets (old), tatamis, and a couple of folding beach chairs. There is a beautiful 3 court cushioned tennis court and a swim pool, both with professional instructors for lessons/exercise classes. Just a few steps away from the complex, there is a small beach where one can sit and read or sunbathe or watch the sunset on a tropic isle to the sound of waves crashing on the lava rocks. Very private because there is no easy public access. Swimming there is only for the experienced because of all the lava rocks. The complex is very close to Kahalu'u Beach with is a very popular (read crowded) park for snorkelling and more gentle surfboarding (lessons = $100). A mile further to Lu'u Aloa Beach where riding the surf close to shore on a boogie board is quite popular.
Caveats. The unit is not new, so it shows some sign of wear and tear. The unit is clean, but only superficially. I think much of that depends on the previous tenant. The rugs had spots on it what were easily cleaned with a damp rag, two of the frying pans still had oil on it, the handle-less cupboards had sticky-to-the-touch door openers (probably from the cooking oil) that no amount of scrubbing would get off, the dining room chairs had stains on cushioned seats, and the tub had a rusty overflow thing. If the tenants above have heavy feet, it can be a bit annoying.
Conclusion. This unit is not for super neatniks. If everything has to be spotless, I would recommend looking elsewhere, but if you're willing to live with the little things this is a great place to stay.
If you are sensitve to cool temperatures, bring a few warmer things to wear, especially if you want to go to the volcanoes. You'll need a car unless you're going to stay just around the complex. Oh, the days, especially in the afternoons can be hazy. Most mornings were sunny and most afternoons were either cloudy or hazy. Perfect, because it didn't get too hot.
