Enjoyable stay at Sandy Hook

We very much enjoyed staying at Sandy Hook. The house was very clean and the towels and sheets nice and plush. The kitchen was well stocked. We enjoyed riding the bikes around the island. The weather was pretty cool while we were there so didn't get to use the nice porch very often but it is very inviting. Robert was attentive and replaced the DVD player when we reported to him that there was no remote for the DVD. I did detect a mold smell in the living room only which sort of bothered me. My husband didn't smell it but I'm more sensitive. I reported this to Robert so he can look into it. I would certainly stay at Sandy Hook if ever on the Island again.

This is a delightful house with everything you could possibly want on a weeks vacation or a month. The screen porch is great for a morning cup of coffee or a glass of wine at night. The bathroom with two sinks was very helpful and the towels so nice and thick! No skimpy towels! I loved that. I found the beds to be very comfortable. There is plenty of room for 4 people. I would not really want more people than that with me but for some maybe 6.
This would be a nice house for a family of 4 or a girls weekend. There was no problem getting into the house. The steps are few. I have stayed at both this house and the one next door. I like them both. The owners are very nice and accommodating.
Ask ahead and use their bikes. Take a walk to the bakery. The BBQ is only a block away as well. Do try their egg-rolls, they are so good I brought 10 home with me! I would recommend this property to people young and old.
Thanks again Robert and Teecie
Owner's Response: Donna,

Thank you for your nice review. We were really glad to have you back. We have to try those egg rolls!

We had a wonderful stay at Sandy Hook Cottage on Dauphin Island. We are a blended family so we also rented the Whale House. It worked out great. Our two families shared the bikes to ride around the island and rented a bike with a carriage to ride our granddaughter around in. Sandy Hook is a very clean, well kept house with a wonderful screened-in porch with a swing and two chairs. A lot of time was spent having fun on the proch. The two bedrooms were spacious and had good closet space and drawer space. The dining room was perfect for our blended family and the den was great to nap in for my granddaughter. The two houses were great for our blended family since they are located next to each other. We biked to the beach, Fort Morgan, Pelican Pub, The Cove(for souveniers) The Mounds and to the Bird Sanctuary. It is a great place to stay and a Great Family Island.Robert(the landlord) was helpful from the booking till the last day. It was a pleasure to stay there and that is where we will stay when we go back. Thanks Robert

I recommend this lovely cottage to anyone wanting to stay on Dauphin Island that doesn't want to be right on the beach.( It's a small island so the beach is just around the corner any where you may turn)
We had 3 families stay next to each other since the Whale House is just next door. Perfect for blended families such as we had. Sandy Hook was perfect with our 2 bedroom and den accomadations. We shared the bicycles from the Whale house, we rented a bike with a toddler carriage and rode to the public beach area, Fort Morgan, Pelican Pub, and the store. The Bakery behind us had wonderful pastries and food. We ate a fine dinner at the Islander restaurant and bought our souveniers at The Cove on Bienville Blvd. Ship and Shore was a great store to purchase our food and it had everything. Excellent Seafood at Pelican Reef before you get to the Island.
Now back to our cottage. Excellent!!! clean, spacious, screened front porch with a swing, dining room perfect for our family, bedrooms clean and good closet space and drawers, bathroom clean with good amount of linens, nice to have the laundry room too. My 4 yr old grandaughter took her naps in the den while watching TV away from the rest of the family. I totally recommend this cottage and the Whale House to everyone wanting a nice quiet area to stay. Robert, the owner was just so nice and helpful from booking, to greeting, to having to leave. Only unfortunate thing that happened was the Ferry broke down and we couldn't make it to the mainland to do our dolphin cruise. We'll do that next time when we go back to stay at the Sandy Hook cottage.

Dauphin Island is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Entry to the island is made by crossing a three mile long high rise bridge which was opened in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island. The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1 ¾ miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. It is estimated that 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations.

You're able to walk to most activities and bicycle riding gets you to the places that walking doesn't. Three of the islands 5 restaurants are walking distance. The beaches are accessible via bicycle, short car ride, or the town's public transportation (two minivans). The cottage is one block in one direction and 1/2 block in the other direction from the bicycle path. The path is a separately paved trail that runs nearly the entire length of the Island. There is a large bird sanctuary that provides excellent walking paths - you'll see beach, forest and swamp on the walk. We love to go there. There is also a small forested bird watching area that we like to walk through as well (an old Indian mound). The Estuarium is also great. They often have fun classes as well as a great tour through their fish/sea life exhibits.
