I am the property manager for this property. Betsy is the property owner.
This home has been in Betsy's family for years. Recently renovated, this family home is now available for weekly rentals and welcome to vacationers coming to Maine.
When you arrive at the Homestead, you will see old family photos throughout the house. This offers a bit of interesting family history. If you are looking for a welcoming property owner, Betsy is ready to offer her family history. She and her family can offer a view of Maine from a family living on Orr's Island for generations.
Plenty of room and great natural lighting in The Homestead. Our two families [5 adults, 4 kids] had a great time here, and never felt cramped or like we had no space to do anything. The smaller room near the kitchen was great for the kids to play at the table, and the family room upstairs was a huge hit with the kids too. The kitchen is fantastic, from the counter tops and great space, to the stove and sink and every kind of dish and utensil you could need. Loved the kitchen. Dining room easily sat all of us, for the days we cooked out and had a big dinner at the house, and there was never a need for fighting over bathrooms or showers. Hot water lasted right through the fifth shower each morning - no complaints there!
The only things that keep me from rating this 5 stars is the matresses, which were really firm [perhaps that just a matter of my own taste], and the little 2-3" 'step' that connected most of the rooms on the first floor. We kept tripping over them, and the kids fell over them a few times, until we finally remembered to step up, or down, as needed to pass into the next room. But really - overall - such a great house, and the other 8 people that stayed there with me completely agree on this assessment. :)
Thanks Betsy & Laurie!
This is a great house. It was very clean and a perfect size for our two families. In a nice location out on Orr's Island. Takes a bit to drive into town but most houses on the islands do. We would stay there again.
This house is not only big in size but it is also BIG in charm. Built in the 1800's it holds onto the feel of the old Maine farm house but the interior has been completely updated and redone.
Head in the kitchen door and you'll find it is large and beautiful with modern appliances and conveniences. To the left is a large room with a cute table for breakfast/coffee. Off of that is the laundry room and the 1st floor bathroom, clean and sparkling but 70's blue. Beautiful!
Turning to the right when you enter brings you to the very large dining room and outdoor patio area. The dining table seats 8+ and would be perfect to host that very large family dinner. One of the downstairs bedrooms is located off the dining room as well.
Through the hall is the sitting room w/ adjacent bedroom. We enjoyed a glass of wine while sitting and listening to the old console stereo.
Up the stairs is the loft style living area complete w/ couch, tv and plenty of room. 2 more bedrooms and a gorgeous new bathroom w/ wainscoting are also up stairs. We slept in the most comfortable bed ever and although we sometimes have a hard time sleeping away from home we slept like babies here.
The home is decorated just like my Grammy kept her house and the old pictures throughout of the house and the former families make you feel like you 'belong'.
This was just the relaxing vacation that we needed and we will definitely head back to 'Grammys House' when we need time away again.
Thanks to Betsy and hubby for making it special for us.
