If You Are Into Water Activities: the beaches provide endless opportunities for enjoyment. Kilkee, a blue flag beach, is perfect for swimming and is one of Ireland’s safest. The best surfing is at Lahinch and a number of schools there provide lessons or coaching for all ages and abilities. Beneath the Cliffs of Moher is probably the world’s biggest surfing wave named ‘Aileens’. It can reach heights of up to 50 feet but does not break unless the elements of wind, tide and swell combine for perfect conditions (it’s not for amateurs or the faint hearted!). Kilkee is great for diving and the late Jacques Cousteau rated it the finest diving spot in Europe. Kilkee also offers kayaking, canoeing, sailing and other water-sports – and you can take beginner lessons or advanced coaching with all equipment provided. Sea, game and coarse fishing can all be enjoyed in West Clare. Knockalough Lake is 5 minutes from the house and holds a good stock of brown trout. Ennis, the capital of the County, is just over 20 minutes away and is well worth a visit. It’s a bustling town which dates back to 1240 and is famous for its quaint narrow streets, shopping and for its music.

We had a wonderful nine days at the Doonbeg River House in September and we would have loved to stay longer. You can believe everything that is on the website and the reviews below give great accurate details too.
The house is top notch and very comfortable. Our party started with 3, increased to 5, then to 7 (plus 6 mth old twins in travel cots) and then added another 2. Everyone was comfortable with plenty of space and plenty of bed linen, towels and pillows.
The gardens are beautifully maintained and secure so the 3 year olds enjoyed great freedom.
The welcome from Marian was super and she made us feel right at home straight away. Nothing was too much bother.
We had a great holiday and have lovely memories. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending the house to anyone and look forward to our next holiday there.
I travelled with my husband, brother, and cousins (7 people in our party) to West Clare, Ireland in Aug. 2014. We had the great pleasure of staying at Doonbeg River House in Kilmihil for a week and it was the perfect base for exploring County Clare. The house is removed from the town centre, which makes for peaceful, beautiful, pastoral surroundings, but close enough to make trips into Kilmihil and nearby towns easy. The house is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, with plenty of towels and bedding. It is bright, airy and spacious and is decorated in a lovely way. There are 2 full bathrooms (one with soaker tub and separate shower, and a 2nd one with shower) in the main house and another full bathroom (with shower) in the Poet's Lodge accommodation just a step across the driveway. The Poet's Lodge was a great place for one of my cousins who liked to retire early and rise very early and was able to do so without disturbing others in our party. The house is thoroughly modern, with excellent water pressure and includes all dishes, pots, cutlery, televisions, free Wi-Fi, printer, etc. There is even a selection of books and movies for those evenings when you may choose to stay in. The main living area (kitchen, dining room, and living room) is open concept and very bright. The kitchen is well-equipped with coffee makers, kettle, dishwasher, stove/oven, and fridge. Bedrooms are roomy and very comfortable. The views from the back of the house (and the kitchen window) are lovely. The gardens are beautiful and well-kept and are a relaxing place to sit in the morning with coffee or in the evening with a glass of wine. Marian, the local property manager, is a wonderful person to deal with and was extremely helpful in every way. She even went out of her way to assist when one of our bags was delayed by the airline and had to be delivered by courier to the house. There was a vase of fresh flowers waiting when we first arrived--a lovely welcome! I would highly recommend Doonbeg River House to anyone looking for accommodation in the West Clare area. It is particularly well suited to larger parties. All in our party look forward to a return visit to this beautiful house.
We picked the Doonbeg River House for our ever expanding family reunions.
The pictures are spot on, it is a beautiful home. As previously stated, very clean, no shortage of linens or towels. Wine and flowers, greatly appreciated. We can't thank Marian enough for her help with the lost luggage and the emergency meds ! Claire was brilliant to work with.
Definitely in our plans to make a return visit.
We arrived at the beginning of July to beautiful sunshine. The house was far better than we expected. As a family of 8 the large house and Poet's Lodge were ideal. Marian met us and gave us tour of the house - a great lady, very helpful and only a phone call away if we needed her. Our grandchildren were able to play safely in the beautiful gardens whilst we all relaxed in the quiet atmosphere and stunning surroundings. We would recommend this house and are planning a return trip.
Three friends together with their families spent a fantastic long weekend in this gorgeous house. The welcome pack in the house which included wine, scones and ice creams for the kids was a lovely touch. The country setting and the fabulous gardens are perfect for relaxing in and the house itself is stunning and so well equipped for large groups. The teenagers enjoyed the independence the studio gave them and there were plenty of chill out spaces in the main house for everyone to enjoy some quiet! Day trips to Kilkee and Doonbeg kept everyone happy too. Don't leave without having some of the local brown soda bread in the village. . .
The house is a hidden gem. The traditional exterior hides a modern well appointed dormer bungalow with great facilities. Up to 10 people can be comfortably accommodated with 4 bedrooms in the main house and a separate apartment on site. My kids loved the mezzanine office and tv room. The house was well equipped and the care taker made sure we had everything we needed when we arrived.
The house is well located within easy driving distance of all the main attractions in County Clare including the Ailwee Caves, the Cliffs of Moher, and the Burren.
The house is set in a peaceful rural countryside with the Doonbeg River flowing by it (salmon fishing!). Open your window and hear the water flow! 20 min in any direction takes you to somewhere special - the Wild Atlantic Ocean, The Shannon Estuary (the Dolphins love it!) or the start of the Loop Head Peninsula - a designated European Destination of Excellence for Aquatic Tourism. From the house you can go salmon fishing on private lands; stroll to Knockalough Lake; take a beach walk (choice of beaches) or enjoy a spectacular cliff walk. Go dolphin watching, bird watching, swimming, surfing, diving, angling, sailing, horse riding, Golf (famous Doonbeg Golf Links is nearby). Great pubs and restaurants. Or, drive into Ennis, the Capital of Clare (less than 30 min away) for shopping, more restaurants, pubs, theater, entertainment and more.
