We are located 20 minutes south of Hilo, halfway between Kea'au & Pahoa, in the desirable Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Swimming, snorkeling & golfing 20-25 minutes away. 40 minutes to Kilauea Volcano. Restaurants and shopping are as close as 10-15 minutes from house.
It's the 4th time I visited Big Island and each time I stay at 2 different rentals. Casa Tortuga is by far my favorite one. Tasteful interior design along with beautiful ocean view. Even on a raining day the view is breathtaking! Very comfortable house to stay in for relaxation, not mentioned the Japanese hot tub. Nice and quiet location yet close to everything! Lynn the owner has been very helpful with all the questions I have and accommodating. Can't say enough good things about this whole place!
We stayed here a week on our honeymoon, and it was wonderful. We were greeted by a sky full of stars, could see the Milky Way and hear ocean sounds. A wonderful view surrounded by tropical plantings. Good location for visiting the Volcanic National Park. Do a helicopter ride if you can. Definitely rent a 4WD and get out onto some of the less travelled roads to see jungle-like growth and lava fields. This is a very special vacation home. Comfortable. A bit hard to find in the dark and a fair drive to restaurants and groceries but well worth it. Romantic.
It has actually been almost a year ago now since my husband and I rented this house. A friend of mine just asked for the VRBO number since we have been raving about our stay all year, and I realized I never rated it. The pictures do not do the house justice, it's is a beautiful house, that is obviously well loved. If you pay attention to details, this place offers it all, and will capture you the minute you walk in the front door. Our favorite part of our stay was enjoying cocktails on the deck before sunset and feeling the mist of the ocean sprays. And I absolutely loved the way the shower could open up for an ocean view. We wish we had reserved a day just to stay in the house to enjoy it.
Unlike another viewer, we found the location perfect for what we wanted to see and do. The Big Island, is a big island and just about everything is a drive no matter where you stay. There are so many beautiful places to see near the house, you just have to get out and explore, however if Volcano's National Park, the Green Sand Beach or stargazing on Mauna Kea is part of your agenda, this is a perfect location, and by the way, I highly recommend all three!
My wife and I stayed here in December 2012 for 8 nights and will never forget the experience.
To start we flew in to Kona and drove the saddle road across the island, arriving at night and found the property well lit with charming garden lighting with fresh flowers under the lights on the walkway to the front door. Upon entering, my wife's first words were "Wow, baby you did good!" We brought in our luggage and being tired from our travels we fell asleep to the sound of the ocean.
The next morning we awoke to the sounds of the ocean and our breaths were taken away by literally how close we were to the beautiful Pacific and the crashing of the waves against the cliffs. The house has an open floor plan so the living room, dining area, kitchen and tv spot (we never used the tv, the ocean being right there was entertainment enough!), are all within view of the Pacific. The bedroom is sheltered from the full sound of the sea which is nice at night since the sound gently puts you to sleep. Don't take that to mean the sound of the ocean is deafening, it is not at all.
The bathroom is amazing and the shower has a door which opens to the sea (it's offset from where you shower so you aren't exposed) so you can enjoy the breeze from outside while showering. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, plates utensils, a blender, rice cooker, you name it, it's there.
There is a stereo system in the living room that we connected our iPhones to via a audio cable we brought with us so we could listen to Internet radio (the house has good wifi) while lounging around.
There was no noise at all from neighbors while we were there. I can't Tortuga enough and the Hilo side of the island is not as rainy as you hear, it is lush, peaceful, beautiful and way more charming than most anything on the Kona side. If you like having your own space to cook and relax and not having to hear your neighbors in 302 upstairs then this is the vacation spot for you! We will never forget our time at Tortuga!
Hello, we are an italian couple leaving in USA since 2005.
We spent in Casa Tortuga our 12 anniversary. I can tell you that the pictures don't bring to justice what this house is.
It is better that that!
It is not actually a place with walls, furnitures and stuff, this is a living thing that tells you a story. The story of two people, Lynn & Don, falling in love and designing the house of their dreams. They actually got married in this house.
I am not into design, I am a computer programmer, but I can tell you that Casa Tortuga will became part of your vacation.
I cannot even start telling how much we loved this place.... everything is so perfect, super-clean, handy and in the right spot. Don and Lynn are super nice and a step away if you need any help. You will only regret the little time (no matter how long) you decided to spend there. We found ourself cutting our trip short to come back sooner.
The house is close to Hilo airport. I would recommended to rent a 4x4, you will need it in many sport. Go to the volcano ride during the night is expensive but totally worth it, the black beach, for sure you will find some turtles, green beach, the warm pool. I also enjoyed the botanic garden, really a lot. You will find in the house many book and guide with the best place to see/to go. Follow them! Everybody added some notes that helps.
I totally would recommended this to a friend... as a matter of fact, as many other we want to go back as soon as we can to spend more time.... if you want to see our picture of this house click or cut and paste this link in your browser:

My wife and I wanted a special vacation to celebrate our 30th anniversary and chose Hawaii as our getaway. We spent one week in Oahu and then discovered Casa de Tortuga on the island of Hawaii for our second week. This discovery was the best. The house was well maintained, clean and provided us with the most romantic and beautiful views during our time at the house. From the time we entered the house, we could not stop smiling. Sliders opened to a great deck with 2 loungers. In the mornings we heard the sounds of the waves crashing on the cliffs below as the sun rose in front of us feeling the trade winds. At night, we laid on the loungers counting the endless number of stars. It made our return to reality very difficult. Don and Lynn had many necessities at the house, including binoculars, one rain cover, a ladies sun hat. They also had some Hawaiian CD's which we enjoyed tremendously. The house was about 30 mins from Hilo & airport. The grocery stores, KTA, Safeway and Walmart were about 15-20 minutes towards Hilo. We found driving to many of the activities & attractions convenient. Restaurants: Pesto's for dinner (good), lunch at Ruebens Mexican Restaurant (very good, original Mexican food), & Cronies (hamburger place). Akaka falls (few miles from Hilo) & Rainbow falls in Hilo. Our scenic ride on Rte 19 to Kona took about 2 1/2 hr but we made several short stops along the way. One stop was at Hapuna Beach for a few hours, which was beautiful, then to Kona. The summit at Mauna Kea was about 1 hr up from Hilo. Driving up Saddle Rd was challenging. Volcano Natl Pk was 30 mins from house & Punaluu black sand beach was 30 mins from Natl Pk. We would very much recommend the house. They have a binder with things to do. We got to meet Lynn and Don and gave them a big hug for designing such a wonderful house inside and out.
Although viewing the lava entering the sea is a mere 25 minute drive, thanks to our location and prevailing tradewinds, our air and skies are clean and blue. Also, we are in the 'sunbelt' of the Puna coast, and receive much less rain than Hilo.
The area offers many opportunities for exploring, hiking, ocean activities, waterfalls & botanical gardens, historic sites and museums, art galleries, shops restaurants- many within a 30 minute drive or less. The Big Island is big, and provides limitless activities, including visiting the observatories on Mauna Kea. Or just relax - it is up you!
