Bird-watcher´s paradise. Enjoy the million-dollar view of the Gulf of Nicoya and the mountains from this two-story new cabin in a secluded 5-acre preserve with lots of fruit trees (tangerines, oranges, water apples, grapefruits, bananas, avocado, rose apples, lemons), over 30 medicinal plants, free-range chickens, and more- This cabin and its sister cabins fund all the animal welfare, environmental and social welfare programs their owners run at the Sustainability Demonstration Center (sustainablecostarica.blogspot.com) located along the main route to Monteverde.
Casa Cielo is only 15 minutes from Monteverde, 7 mins from Santa Elena
Situated right off the main road to San Jose (route 606), but nestled in the mountains, it is a 5 minute drive to grocery stores, banks, restaurants, etc.
Enjoy the Cloud Forest attractions during the day, but at night, retreat to the low-land drier and warmer climate and its diverse wildlife.
Wake up to the sound of parrots flying overhead and blue magpies knocking at your window, then warm up with a cup of herbal tea straight from our garden or organic coffee from the San Luis Valley.
Later on, take a walk on the trails and see beauty and biodiversity all around... you could even feed the chickens and fish.
In the evening, watch the amazing sunset from the balcony and curl up in a tub for two.
Less than 2 hours to the beach, 3.5 hours to Volcan Arenal, 30 mins to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and zip-lines, 20 mins to Children´s Eternal Rain Forest, 7 minutes to ranarium, herpetarium, horse-back rides, orchid and butterfly gardens.
The cabin is fully equipped. The first floor features the kitchen with large picture windows overlooking the mountains and ocean. There is a living area, a desk, a washer and a full bathroom. The second floor has a comfortable double bed, a balcony also overlooking the ocean, a romantic bathtub for two, a sofa and coffee table and some storage space. A ladder takes you to an additional sleeping area for a teenager or adult (too dangerous for a small child).
There is wi-fi/internet free of charge. You also have your own phone line with free calls within Costa Rica.

Alexander was born in the San Luis Valley in the Monteverde region and has lived all his life here. He started working when he was 11 years old helping his father herd oxen to take milk to the local cheese factory. At the age of 15, he began working for the Children´s Eternal Rain Forest, then he worked for InBio (Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad) researching snails all over Costa Rica, he then worked for ProNativas, an non-profit organization that promotes the use of native ornamental plants as a conservation effort. He believes in changing the world one person at a time, starting with ourselves.
Veronica was born in Mexico and spent 25 years in the States. She worked as a biologist, then as a licensed clinical social worker in various settings including private practice with people suffering from chronic physical illnesses and hospice care. She arrived in Monteverde a few years ago with her 5 year old son, Stuart. She founded PAWS costarica (Promotion of Animal Wellbeing Society), a non-profit organization to help educate people regarding the responsible and compassionate treatment of animals. She believes, like Alex, in changing the world from the inside (OUR inside) out. Everything we do, our choices and lifestyles sum up to our current state of affairs… we have the power to choose again so we can heal ourselves, our planet and all living beings.
Their work with their ecotourism business, their Sustainability Demonstration Center, and rural communities helps visitors understand the intimate connection that we have to the land. The entire community gets to benefit from the tourism that comes to this very rural area and get to share their own wisdom. Everyone wins.
Stuart is 12 years old and attends the public school in Guacimal. He shares our family dream of enjoying the simple things and having lots of fun playing soccer and bird-watching.
Our dream is to achieve sustainability in harmony with nature
veronica sheehan purchased this cabin in 2005
22 years ago, Alexander bought this land. It had been used for cattle and was pretty devoid of tress. He wanted to reforest it and turn it into a safe haven for birds and animals. He built the cabin 5 years ago. It is now a 5 acre paradise!
We love the peace and quiet, the sounds of the parrots flying overhead, and of the birds on the trees. We like having lots of space to roam and to plant things. Our animals are happy here too and we enjoy seeing them free and happy. We enjoy eating what we grow. We feel in harmony with nature. We are close to everything, but when we are home we have our privacy and space. There is enough peace that you can relax, renew and reconnect. Being here reminds one of who we truly are and why we are here.
We spent 3 days in Monterverde and stayed at Casa Cielo with our 3 kids. What an awesome cabin! The kids called it the "triangle house". The cabin is fully equipped, very confortable and a VIP spot for the most stunning sunsets! Special thanks to Veronica for that most delicious snack upon our arrival! So appreciated! Don't miss that horseback riding activity with a dip in private hot pools at Finca Lindora 2 minutes from the cabin. We will keep such great memories of our trip in Monteverde and casa cielo.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Casa Cielo for 3 days during our recent stay in Costa Rica, and agreed that this was the highlight of our trip. Veronica was wonderful in helping us plan for the trip (things to do, items to bring, driving directions). The property was clean, beds were comfortable, and the house had every little thing you may need during your getaway (from kitchen stuff and wine glasses to binoculars and board games). The best things about Casa Cielo were 1- gorgeous view (which also can be enjoyed from the bath tub), 2 - tropical wildlife (butterflies, jays, flycatchers, and even a couple of toucans came to visit us), and 3 - proximity to various activities in Monteverde/Santa Elena. We'd recommend this place over any of the hotels in the area. Truly a piece of paradise.
When I started planning my trip to Monteverde, I was very discouraged because, as a recent college grad, I was on a tight budget. Every hotel I looked at online wanted much more money than I could have possibly paid. I was getting very discouraged because I wanted the experience of being in a cloud forest and not in a hostel. Then I stumbled upon Casa Cielo and it turned out to be everything I could ever dream of.
We were greeted by Veronica and her friend who had lived there for 3 years. They were very welcoming and had snacks for us when we arrived (homemade tortillas, queso fresco, and plantains, yum!) and their families were out on the farm collecting fruit for us! After they left, my boyfriend and I were perfectly happy to just sit and enjoy the AMAZING view (and I can't stress that word enough, it truly was incredible). We enjoyed the organic, home grown coffee they provided us as we sat on the second floor balcony watching the sunset.
The town is very close and only took us about 5-10 minutes to reach. It has everything you could need or want! The people there are very friendly and have no problem helping you if you need it. We ate at Taco Taco for most of our meals, because it was just that good!
The cabin itself is adorable and cozy. We did have a few, large friends (of the 8 legged variety) greet us after the sun went down but we left them to do their job in keeping the rest of the buggies out! We also made friends with the neighborhood doggies and picked up a bag of food for them while we were in town. They loved it and would greet us every time we went out the door! Unfortunately, we were unable to see the toucans but we did see a variety of beautiful and interesting birds (and some even came to wake us up in the morning by knocking on our window!).
All in all, Casa Cielo is just spectacular. The views are gorgeous, whether sun up or down, and the cabin makes you feel right at home. I really wish we had planned to stay more than two nights. Thank you to Veronica and family for sharing your piece of paradise! It was everything we hoped for and more.
We spent a wonderful week at Casa Cielo in May. We arrived after dark, Veronica and Stuart met us with flashlights and snacks. We also received a guided tour around the farm. Stuart was an awesome guide! Veronica was lovely, and so helpful with making plans. I couldnt have asked for kinder hosts on my first trip to Costa Rica.
The casa itself is adorable, and with a knock out view. We had visitors of the furred and feathered kind on a daily basis. It was peaceful and felt remote, but we were only a short drive down the road from Santa Elena.
All in all it was a wonderful time, and I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
My wife and I, 24 yo., were traveling around Costa Rica for our honeymoon, from California, and had the pleasure of staying at Casa Cielo. This place was wonderful, the house is great, clean, comfortable, could easily fit 4-6 people. Its settled on the side of the mountain with some of the most spectacular view and sunsets I have seen. The house is on a piece of property set aside as a reserve, and a hike through the property itself is awesome. Its a bit of a ways from downtown, but the taxi ride is really easy, we walked it a few times.
Veronica was unbelievably hospitable and helped us out a lot, she is very knowledgeable and will have you doing some pretty amazing things if you choose to follow her suggestions. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this place to anyone.
We enjoyed 8 nights at this peaceful cabin away from the bustling touristy town of Santa Elena. We came to this area of CR to primarily hike in the cloud forests and that we did! Monteverde Reserve, Santa Elena, Selvatura Hanging Bridges, Curi Conchea for viewing of Quetzels are must do if you like to hike. Also enjoyed Serpentarium, Bat Jungle, Stellas Cafe, and Taco Taco. Casa Ceilo was a peaceful retreat after a full day of activities. The cabin has all the necessary amenities for cooking a lovely meal while enjoying a million dollar view. Balcony sitting area wonderful for enjoying a drink and watching gorgeous sunsets. Veronica and family were great hosts and there if you need them. Welcoming Tico treat was tasty and appreciated. And, don't pass up a traditional Tico dinner or breakfast made by friendly neighbour Giselle, a delightful experience in itself. I would certainly recommend Casa Ceilo for those looking for a lovely unique lodging.
Cloud forest preserves nearby, ziplines, birding tours, night hikes, world-famous Monteverde Cheese Factory, chocolate factory, butterfly, frog and orchid gardens. Horse back riding to hot springs 2 minutes away.
We conduct rural tourism tours.
A professional massage therapist will come onsite to do body work and facials.
