Windwood Cottage is located directly on Lake Michigan on the northern tip of Beaver Island, 35 miles from Charlevoix on the mainland where most visitors embark by scheduled seasonal ferry serivce or year round air service. One of a half dozen lakefront homes located wtihin a mile radius, Windwood Cottage offers guests the ultimate in comfort and peaceful solitude. Oriental rugs, original works of art, a hand built stone fireplace, fully equipped gourmet kitchen, and a screened in dining and sleeping porch running the width of the lakefront side of the home are a few of the best features. An outdoor shower refreshes guests after a dip in the lake on the rocky shore. A beach side deck and fire pit is the perfect location to view the adjoining archipelegp of islands or for stargazing at night. Go swimming on the sandy mile long crescent of Donegal Bay just 1 mile from the cottage, or hike, bike or run on the primarily flat dirt roads and trails out the back door.

Originally inhabited by Native American Indians, Beaver Island became home to several Irish Immigrant families in the 1840's. A large sect of Mormons farmed and lived on the island in the 1850's and 1860's, while remnants of their agrarian life is seen in ruined log cabins and barns and is chronicled at the Mormon History Museum in town. Visitors and residents alike appreciate the remote and quiet lifestyle that the Island offers, with a variety of outdoor and sporting activities to suit every lifestyle and taste. A Community Center in a recently restored 100 year old storefront building on the harborfront has become a gathering place for visitors and residents to see live entertainment, cinema, lectures and a youth activity center with video gaming, computers with internet access and other leisure and entertainment activities.

The year round population of 600 people swells into the thousands as family, sportsmen, athletes, college students, boaters and campers are attracted to the island for it's many seasonal offerings. Daily car and passenger ferryboat service during the high summer season as well as scheduled air service daily in commuter prop planes keep folks connected with the mainland communities of Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, the Mackinac Straights and beyond. Beaver Island is a 4 hour drive north from Detroit and 3 hours from Grand Rapids.

Windwood Cottage is located on Beaver Island which sits 35 miles off shore in Northern Lake Michigan. Visitors and residents arrive by private powerboat or sailboat, or by regularly scheduled ferry boat service (seasonal) or commuter plane service (year round).

The biggest draw to Beaver Island is the peaceful solitude and variety of outdoor activities away from the crush of crowded beach resort communities. A sense of safety, relaxation and quiet make for a relaxing vacation. Hunting and fishing abound, as well as a variety of water sports activities including sailing, jetskiing, scuba diving to Great Lakes Shipwrecks, kayaking, swimming, cycling, hiking to name a few.
