Topside is a stunning seaside home located on Elbow Cay's exclusive North End -- just 10 minutes by golf cart, boat or bike to Hope Town's 18th century settlement and famous candy-striped lighthouse. A great place for relaxation and renewal, the house overlooks sparkling turquoise water and a pristine white sand beach, attracting returning guests year after year. Wrap-around decks and water views are accessible from every room. A rooftop sky deck is perfect for sunbathing and stargazing -- affording a 360 degree panoramic view of 20 islands, barrier reefs, and the historic 1864 lighthouse. House rental comes with wireless internet, central air conditioning, gourmet kitchen, automatic generator, satellite TV. Golf cart available for rent through Elbow Cay Cart Rentals or elsewhere. Convenient access to North End community dock for optional guest boat rental as well as to Atlantic Ocean beaches for beachcombing, swimming and snorkeling. Delightful year-round, Topside welcomes guests to a special island retreat amidst exceptional natural beauty. Sorry, house is simply not suitable for children.
Although we had stayed at Topside for many years, we had not been in the last four years. We were eager to get back to this special place and we were not disappointed. Topside is maintained at a very high level, not commonly encountered in many Bahamian rentals. Recently, the owners undertook complete refinishing of the wraparound wood deck, cleaning of the cisterns, and replanting the extensive gardens. All of this simply adds to the already magnificent scenery and surroundings. This house also is equipped with wireless internet, central air, and a generator that automatically comes on when the power goes out (not an uncommon event). While we were visiting, the local landlines were down, but a VHF radio and cell phones worked fine.
The top deck gives a 360-degree view, both to the Atlantic in the east and the Sea of Abaco to the west. As noted, the house has a fully stocked kitchen (including a wok and a blender), great books, puzzles, and multi-media center. The great room concept with master suites on either end make sharing this house enjoyable. There is another small bedroom upstairs with a half-bath that gives a great view of the lighthouse.
The new caretakers have settled in and the place was spotless and fresh cuts flowers from the garden awaited us. The caretakers were available by phone, but we also met them along the road into town. It's a small place, so everyone seems to know who's who.
Traveling in late summer, especially after mid-August, you will find that several restaurants and businesses close for a hiatus. The grocery stores and marina stay open, as does the Hopetown Harbor Lodge (in town). A boat, golf cart, or bikes are the only transportation. This is a place to unplug and unwind and Topside is the perfect place to do it.
Topside is a lovely home and the perfect place to stay on Elbow Cay. The house is well-maintained, comfortable and has all the amenities you need. Steps from the deck lead directly on to the beach and the warm outdoor shower is particularly nice after snorkeling. The location, on the North End of Elbow Cay, is charming and the views from the decks of Topside are stunning! The owner and the caretakers go out of their way to make your stay easy and enjoyable. It was a prefect stay!
Topside is a must for a dream vacation! This was our first trip to the Bahamas, and we loved it. Elboy Cay is beautiful, and Hope Town is charming and offers everything from fun shops to wonderful restaurants. There is even great reggae if you're a music lover. TopSide is a beautiful home complete with a fully-functioning kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, and an open-flow living and dining area that made all of us feel at home. In addition, every room has a stunning view of the Abaco Sea. Along with our two teenagers, there wasn't a dull moment for any of us. Coffee in the morning and wine under the stars at night were great ways to enjoy the decks and breathtaking views. There was snorkeling right outside our door or a short walk to the Atlantic. Bike riding, boating, and tooling around in the golf cart were highlights. TopSide is on the north side of the island, and very quiet and peaceful. However, if you want to experience the activity of Hope Town and the harbor, it's a short bike ride or golf cart ride to town. This truly was a magical vacation for us, and we hope to stay at Topside again on our next trip to the Bahamas.
You won't want to miss the chance to spend your vacation at Topside. After 2 weeks there in Spring, 2012, we're looking forward to a 3-week stay in March & April, 2013.
This was our 6th trip to Elbow Cay, so we were familiar with the location when we booked the house. The photos and descriptions online were so inviting, and our communication with the owner very satisfactory.
We were not to be disappointed. The house is lovely, so attractively and well furnished, and equally well-equipped. This was the third house on Elbow Cay we had rented, so we had a basis for comparison.
The owners had been doing a lot of recent maintenance and updating, even though the house is not old. Accomplishing these things on a small island in the Caribbean is no small challenge, but they were diligently tending to things they felt needed attention, all of which we appreciated.
When we were there, the owners had just contracted with a new couple as caretakers, so things were in a state of transition, and the cleanliness wasn't perfect. I'm sure that six months later things are probably shipshape. We settled in quickly and were very comfortable and content, loved the setting, the quiet and the privacy. The views are spectacular, the sunsets perfection, and the east and west decks perfect, with the beach just down the steps.
The main living space is really an open great room - kitchen, living & dining - bracketed by almost-identical queen bedrooms with their own baths on either end of the house, as well as the twin-bed room upstairs.
The golf cart as part of the rental is also a bonus, and needed for getting to town when you're going to be carrying food & drink.
We enjoy renting a boat from Island Marine that we can dock at the North End, walking the Sea of Abaco beach right in front of the house and wading to fish right there, walking to town and back each day for our daily exercise, the 5-minute walk to the Atlantic beach on the other side, poking around Hopetown on foot, and the rest of the island by bicycle. There are some nice little shops and fun restaurants, as well as regular and special community events to check out.
We appreciate having the internet for staying in touch with our family over several weeks, but we barely, if ever, turn on the TV and enjoy being generally 'unplugged'. Lots of wonderful books on the shelves - both about the area plus good fiction & non-fiction.
It's a great way to visit the Bahamas. You won't be disappointed.
Topside is the stuff of dreams come true. This beautifully maintained, equipped, and furnished home provides all one could ask for a truly memorable vacation. Watching the sunrise from the top deck with morning coffee in hand, sipping good wine on the deck and enjoying spectacular sunsets is a daily pleasure. This home is immaculate and tastefully furnished, the grounds are lovely, and the setting quiet and private.
We are counting the days until our return!
We have visited the Bahamas and stayed in the Hope Town area for years but I have to say that our visit to Topside was one of the best and most memorable of them all. The house is fabulous and has all the room and amenties that anyone could possible want. We found the house neat and clean and everything updated. The use of the golf cart makes visiting Hope Town for shopping, dinner, etc. very easy and vertually eliminates the need for a boat.
The way the house is situated its like having your own private beach and our walks on the beach in our PJs each morning were such a wonderful way to start each day. The owner was very accomodating and provided lots of information about the house and area. We will definitely be staying at Topside on our next visit to the Bahamas.
