UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO RENT ISLAND'S OLDEST HOUSE!

Siasconset House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms sleep 8 total; 4 adults and up to 4 kids fit best

Historically significant house built in 1682, located in Siasconset (Sconset), a dreamlike hamlet of old rose-covered cottages dating back to Nantucket's early years, a full century before Nantucket became the whaling center of the world. This house has been a General Store, a Boarding House, a Tavern, a Brothel and a Post Office in it's rich and storied existence.

There's a Main House with a Master bedroom and a loft divided into two sleeping chambers, each with two twin beds. Guest Cottage is a studio design with a Queen Bed and full bath. Property is surrounded by hedges that give the yard a privacy unusual in 'Sconset. All amenities, including washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, cable TV, DVD and Internet. Bicycles and fishing gear available.

Shuttle service works great, goes everywhere you might want to go and drops off within 100 yards of the house. A car is nice, but you do not need one to enjoy this wonderful island.

Walk to beach, market, tennis, cafe, fishing, great restaurant. Three different golf courses within 2 miles.

Because of the historical significance and the age of this house, this house requires responsible tenants who understand and appreciate the significance of the property and the sensibilities necessary to live in this special community. While we fully expect you to thoroughly enjoy your stay and take as much as you possibly can away from your time here, we ask in return that you treat this special house as though it were your own. It is a house that simply can not be replaced at any cost.

No pets, no infant children and absolutely no smoking inside, outside, or within the confines of the property.

I'm a 59 year old father of 16 year old twin boys who love the island as much as I do. My wife always wanted a sprawling beachfront house with wicker furniture, but I finally convinced her those were a dime a dozen and this house re-defined the word unique. It took her about 30 seconds in the house to understand, and we've been proud parents of both the boys and the house ever since.

Michael Darling purchased this house in 1961

It exudes history and charm. On an island that revers history above all else, only one house can lay claim to the title oldest house. We're it, a fact that a commissioned study conducted 15 years ago by the island's preeminent historian, proved once and for all. It's history is rich and storied, and in it's day this house has been a General Store, a brothel, a Post Office, a Boarding House and a private residence. If you are lucky, you might get one chance in a lifetime to buy a house like this, and we weren't about to let it pass. After all, how many times can you say you've just slept in a house on American soil that is 137 years older than the United States of America itself?

It's comfortable, has all the modern conveniences except for central and A/C including internet, cable, DVD and WiFi. If you want to stay connected to the office, you can be, it's your choice. Also has, for Sconset, a generous lawn for entertaining and evening cocktails, and a hedge around the entire property, which give it a privacy rare in Sconset. Walk to beach, General Store, Post Office and restaurant. Shuttle service to anywhere on the island has drop off 50 yards from house.

Amazing historic home -- fabulous Sciasconset!

  • 5 of 5
Can't say enough about this wonderful architecturally significant historic home in the best village on the island! Another reviewer had it exactly right -- while you enjoy the unique experience of a whaler's cottage, there are modern amenities full kitchen, nice bathrooms, washer & dryer, wifi, TV, etc....very clean, very charming and stylish. Great little private yard with high hedge, in the heart of 'Sconset, directly on Pump Square. Steps to market, post office, restaurants. You can walk or bike every where; there are dining options nearby from sandwiches to fancy and the beach is right down the hill. If you want the real 'Sconset experience this is a wonderful place to have it.

Priceless home -- what a treat to stay here

  • 5 of 5
We had such a fabulous stay in this charming historic home. We felt so lucky to be staying in the house, an architectural gem from centuries ago, all restored an authentic. Though it's authentic there are modern amenities for the modern vacationer - full kitchen, nice bathrooms, washer & dryer, wifi, TV, etc....Everything was as comfortable and clean as can be. Neat books to look at. Great little yard that was very pleasant to sit in. Best of all it's in the heart of 'Sconset, smack where you want to be, on Broadway. Steps to beach, little market and post office. You can walk everywhere. Or bike. And you'll be surrounded by other charming old cottages. I can't recommend it highly enough. Great friendly owner too. If you want the 'old 'Sconset' experience stay here.

Charming home on Nantucket

  • 5 of 5
Spur of the moment road trip to Nantucket was superbly enhanced by our accommodations. Owner was gracious to a fault. House is well supplied, very tidy and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay (perfect weather certainly helped). Very nice guest house for two, master bedroom for the master/s and upstairs room for four (kids would work best). No hesitations to recommend-you will enjoy . Tim Everett
