About Bernie Byrne

Sandy and Bernie Byrne are Iowa born via Coral Gables/Miami FL. Bernie grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa and Sandy in Iowa City, the home of the University of Iowa (Hawkeyes). Sandy has authored several books and has traveled the world lecturing & teaching Ultrasound of the Eye. She feels so fortunate to have helped so many people with unique eye problems. We are overjoyed to be in the Asheville area for 18 years now and have worked diligently to develop a true Green, Organic, and Sustainable community just 25 minutes north of Asheville called Mountain Meadows on Crooked Creek. Just recently we converted our Biltmore Loft in Downtown Asheville to a vacation rental. We want to use it often too so we loaded it up with the most comfortable and convenient furnishings and electronics to go along with all of the exciting energies in Downtown Asheville. Excellent health in all physical, mental, and spiritual ways has been our positive passion for a long time and we feel so privileged to enjoy our kids, Cherie, Nicole & Donnie along with our grand daughters Amanda, Maddie, & Tabitha. Please give us a call at 828 230-0755 so that we may answer any other questions you have.

Bernie Byrne purchased this condo in 1999
Why Bernie Byrne chose Asheville

Downtown was not yet hip when we decided to buy a building in Asheville in the year 1999. We thought, hey, wouldn't it be a creative, FUN time and investment to renovate an old building and be able to have a small apartment where we could stay sometimes? Though our farm was only 23minutes north, we felt this downtown option would really be the lap of luxury (it is)! We were fortunate to find an old, 2 story corner building with an art studio and gallery on the main floor, an apartment above, and a dilapidated basement. There were dozens of coats of paint on both the brick walls and the old Heartwood Pine floors; the frontage was a 1940's aluminum; and the owners were relectant to sell. After friendly negotiations, and paying much more than we really thought it was worth (does that sound familiar?), we went to work redesigning and putting together a construction crew. This 18 inch brick walled, ugly and decrepit dinosaur circa 1885 building is transformed and now on the National Historic Register on a gem of a corner surrounded by thriving restaurants, shops, galleries, coffee houses, a parking garage, and the new A-loft Hotel (part of the international Starwood Hotel system). We feel so fortunate to be part of a bustling downtown that still retains its historic character and charm!

What makes this condo unique

We've said it all before and we'll say it again - you'll just LOVE being Downtown right in the middle of it all with kind and caring folks all around and exciting things all about! The character and simplicity of Heartwood Pine floors, high ceilings and brick walls, all enconsced in a 1000 SF Loft with tall windows and skylights.... is awesome. Next door you'll visit the Double Decker Coffee & Dessert BUS; view the Fine Arts Theatre across the street where you will see artsy new independent movies; just a block away enjoy The Orange Peel, considered by Rolling Stone Magazine to be one of the best music venues in the nation; organic minded bodies will resonate with the French Broad Co-op 1 block south and the Farmer's Market down the street on Wednesday afternoon plus the City Market a few blocks away on Saturday mornings, in season; take a slow walk in the delightfully designed Pack Square Park up the street with its grassy areas and trees, water features, and its leisurely promenade - great for sitting, musing, and people watching; how about Broadway quality shows at Pack Square in the Diana Wortham Theatre just 1 block up the way?; a plethora of natural 'farm to table' restaurants are tantalizing; the original craft brewery in Asheville, Highland Brewery, was born in the basement environs of Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria right across the street; the Drum Circle, our primal beat, is our go-to on Friday nights - could we be so lucky?

Loved 39 Biltmore Loft

5 of 5
Submitted: May 13, 2013 Stayed: May 2013
We spent 4 nights at 39 Biltmore in early May (though the weather outside felt more like early March). We really felt right at home in this very comfortable condo. It was just as decribed, very clean, beautifully decorated, and had all the amenities one could ask for. The location was ideal. We will recommend this condo to anyone we know who is planning a visit to the area.

Bernie was great to deal with, very responsive, and left many great restaurant suggestions. For breakfast we twice went to Green Sage Cafe, but later discovered the food was even better at the City Bakery (almost across the street). We had excellent dinners at Limones, The Market Place, and Zambra. And one night we ventured out of the downtown area, and had a nice meal at Isis.

We loved the fact that Asheville is made up of independent shops and restaurants. The focus on "farm to table", and the use of local ingredients was very refreshing. Everyone we encountered was very friendly.

The heavy rains nixed some of our hiking plans, but we were able to hike Mt. Pigsah on our final day. It's not a difficult hike, and the views at the top are amazing. We also spent one day touring the Biltmore. The grounds are worth the admission price, and if you're a fan of Downton Abbey, the house tour is kind of interesting too.

We would go back to 39 Biltmore in a heartbeat.
Owner's Response: Donna......you sent a lot of warm words and descriptive notes about your visit to 39 Biltmore Loft and downtown Asheville - thank you! It is always refreshing to hear such positive experiences about our "foodie destination," as well as the various attractions and the relaxing walks around downtown. Sandy and I strive to create a warm and pristine environment for our guests in a friendly and exciting downtown. We look forward to your visit again soon and thanks for recommending our Loft to your friends! Bernie & Sandy......

An Excellent Choice!

5 of 5
Submitted: April 6, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
We spent a week at the Biltmore Loft. Definitely the place to stay on a visit to Asheville. The loft is immaculate, comfortable and well furnished and equipped for a lengthy stay. Within walking distance of numerous excellent restaurants and attractions. It met all of our expectations. We were fortunate to meet Bernie and get a tour of the recently completed second apartment on the premises. While smaller, it is also tastefully furnished and completely equipped. Certainly worth considering for two people with a restricted budget. Bernie and Sandy have done an excellent job in meeting the tourists' needs.

We had a great visit to Asheville and loved the Biltmore loft. The location is wonderful - just a few blocks to anything you'd want to see or do in downtown Asheville. The space is wonderful - beautifully set up and perfect for a romantic getaway. We loved our time there and will certainly return sometime soon. Much thanks to Bernie and Sandy for being perfect hosts.
Owner's Response: James.....we are pleased that you had a good time in the middle of downtown in the Biltmore Loft and happy that you were able to take time for a romantic getaway! As Sandy mentioned, you left the Loft in such excellent condition that we look forward to your next visit......soon! In just a few days the Biltmore Studio (same building) will be available as a walk-out vacation rental with virtually the same accoutrements as the Biltmore Loft save the high ceilings and exposed brick. It will be priced at $145/night, has a small sitting patio, and includes a parking space outside the gate. We feel fortunate to provide an alternative cozy little corner to rest and relax.......Bernie

This loft was such a fun experience. Sooo much more pleasant than a hotel. The pictures are very accurate in depicting a clean, well-lit, well-appointed second floor city loft. My experience was very much a home away from home type---without the upkeep!
It was terrific to find paper products in abundance in the kitchen and bathroom as well as a full array of appliances one might need. I did find the washing machine and dryer to be a major convenience as well.

Although I stayed by myself for a week and enjoyed walking about Asheville tremendously, I do look forward to returning with my husband and perhaps one or two of my children. Plenty of room.

Loved the in-town location. Asheville is a super town. I went to the movies just across the street--twice. And one day slept in, found the day to be a little gray and cold so ordered carry-out from Doc Chen's restaurant one door down and ended up spending the entire day sleeping and reading. Fantastic. A real treat to myself.

Owner's Response: Kate.....your "home away from home" description is the kind of testament we treasure hearing about the Biltmore Loft! And treating yourself to some relaxation.....now that's how it should be done! Yes, sooooo much more comfort and ambiance than the hotel rooms - and in the best location. Speaking of treasures, the Fine Arts Theatre you mentioned across the street is an Art Deco design. Asheville has the most Art Deco designed buildings in the U.S. next to South Beach. Sandy and I look forward to seeing you again soon, Kate, and appreciate the excellent condition you left the Biltmore Loft in....even after a week's stay....Bernie

I just wanted to start by saying Bernie, the owner, is an excellent person to work with. He is very honest and prompt on his responses. I had my deposit back right away without any hesitation! The Biltmore loft is very nice! Enjoyed the convenience of being right downtown! The kitchen is stocked with the latest in appliances, cookware, and utensils. Everything was very clean and in working order! Would definately recommend this place to anyone!!

Owner's Response: Lorraine......thank you and Bryan for choosing the Biltmore Loft as your spontaneous choice for celebration and congrats on your 7 year anniversary! Sandy and I also enjoy the Cuisinart cookware and small appliances along with the big stainless steel ones, when we are fortunate enough to stay in the Loft ourselves. Thank you too for your excellent communication and we look forward to your return visit soon. The next time you will also have the option of staying in our Biltmore Studio in the same building on the ground floor in the back. This cute 525 square foot Studio has a small patio and a parking space just outside the French Cut fence and will likely rent for $145/night + a $60 cleaning fee and 7% NC tax.....Bernie
