Bolinas Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Circa 1906 one-bedroom cottage was once part of the Briones Mexican Land Grant. The Briones' married into the Lauff Family and this was the home of Jack Lauff. The Cottage was a caretaker cottage. Tucked in an orchard garden., it features a sun porch, separate office/studio; sunny, peaceful, & private location. Or you may be inspired y to bake your favorite cookies and pies. The house just has that feeling. Wildlife abounds...quail, blue herons, deer, blue birds, soaring hawks, and hummingbirds as you bathe in the outdoor tub surrounded by honeysuckle, jasmine and roses.

Just a mile from Bolinas Beach and a couple miles from Agate Beach. Many hiking and bicycling options in State and National Parks. Beauty abounds. If you are not already, you will leave a photographer!

Note: I do live in the home with my cat when it is not rented. It gets thoroughly and professionally cleaned before your stay. The cat comes with me.

About Terry Donohue

When I moved to West Marin from Chicago I knew that I had landed someplace so special. This is paradise! But when I drove down Horseshoe Hill Road and saw this little red farmhouse, I stopped the car. It looked a bit like a Little House on the Prairie as it was set back in a pasture. The cottage was built in 1906 and was part of the Lauff Ranch. I live in the Barn that is also on the property. Flowers and fruit trees and beauty all around. Horseshoe Hill is protected, thus making it warmer than the rest of Bolinas. Most of the surrounding properties have multiple acres so there is privacy. It is about a mile away from downtown and the beach, yet the surf can be heard in the distance as the ocean is just to the west over the ridge. I can't imagine living anywhere else. I have seen coyotes and bobcats, blue herons and snowy egrets, the hummingbirds, honeybees, woodpeckers, several kinds of owls, and other night creatures call in the night. If there is a full moon and weather is clear, there is no need for flashlights to light your way.

Why Terry Donohue chose Bolinas

This property is out of the fray of the downtown Bolinas which can be filled with out of town surfers and visitors. While Bolinas Beach and Downtown can feel festive, it is great to be able to leave the beach or return from long hikes to relax on this quiet and light cottage. There is hammock for reading that novel and sip lemonade. In fact there are 4 Meyer Lemon Trees bearing fruit from which to make your fresh lemonade! When they are laying there are fresh, organic eggs from happy hens living on the property. On clear nights, away from streetlights, a zillion stars, meteor showers, planets, and moons have the celestial stage. On New Moon Nights you can go up to the Mt Theater the Mt Tam Lecture Nights and San Francisco Amateur Astronomers (Apr-Oct) where after the lecture, Astronomers will help you view then night sky through their high powered telescopes. See other galaxies, nebulae, constellations. Children love this property as they are safe, away from traffic.

A fantastic retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Terry's cottage in January and had the most peaceful retreat. Perfectly located just outside the main town of Bolinas on a secluded piece of gorgeous property. Each night we sat in the outdoor tub and listened to the frogs. Each morning we ran on the endless trails, visiting goats, cows, chickens and beautiful birds. You can walk into town, to the beach and hop on your bikes and ride up the road along the coast. Terry provided us with a bowl of colorful eggs from her organic chickens and delicious meyer lemons from the tree outside. There is nothing more we could have asked for at the Idyllic Pastoral Retreat. We will definitely be back!

Wonderful Summer Trip!

  • 5 of 5

We had a totally great time at Terry's cottage in Bolinas! My kids climbed trees, saw all manner of wild life, ran around in the field, chatted over the fence with the horses next door. Terry was a lovely landlord, very sweet to my kids, thoughtful and helpful with where to go on hikes, when the best low tides were etc. The cottage was so pleasant and nicely appointed, stocked with what we needed in terms of pots, pants, towels etc. We loved the proximity to Point Reyes and Stinson.

Owner's Response: It was a pretty special time for me as well! I look forward to your return. I hope to let them each choose a chicken to care for as there will be a portable coop in the yard of the cottage for them to use.

SF family's weekend getaway

We have stayed here many times and treat this as our home away from home in Bolinas. Perfect for two couples and can even squeeze in a couple youngsters (we have a 2 year old that sleeps in a pack n play in the laundry room). The soaking tub under the stars should not be missed.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Will! Yes, it is my goal to make this sweet little cottage a home away from home. It is humble, light, and comfy. In addition to the yard being fenced and private it is within a larger property of 2 acres. The neighbors have horses that the little ones can see from the fence (adult supervision, please). Often the chickens are free-ranging and a multitude of birds and flowers abound.

Prefect for a retreat/getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a working vacation/retreat here for three weeks. The cottage worked wonderfully for us - we were able to work in the peaceful setting while taking time to cook meals together and enjoy a glass of wine in the afternoons in the garden. My husband got a kick out of saving our veggie scraps for the chickens. Our only regret is that the apples on the tree right outside the sunporch/office did not ripen enough for us to pick.

We will certainly stay again. Hopefully, longer!

Along with our two adult children, we stayed in this simply charming country cottage Thanksgiving weekend 2011. Everything was exactly as stated in the property's description, very clean, open and airy. We felt right at home right away - the listing photos are quite accurate. Terry was very accommodating and brought over pot holders in case I was cooking for Thanksgiving - very thoughtful. Farm fresh eggs were waiting for us upon arrival along with lovely tree-ripened lemons. We also enjoyed munching the delicious apples Terry has growing on the property. We had reservations for Thanksgiving dinner at the Farmhouse in Olema - great service and the food hit the spot. The cottage location is private and we were treated to clear night skies for stargazing. I'd bring a telescope along next time. We are avid hikers and spent most of our time in the Five Brooks area. The McCurdy Trail in the Olema Valley offers up gorgeous views and there's a stand of redwoods growing along the upper portion of the trail. We even caught a pair of buzzards mating. Unexpected beauty everywhere you turn...cannot wait to return!
