We grew up on the SC coast in the summers and have always wanted a home here. We found this place through a friend, and it has been just perfect for get away weekends. Rentals are limited, as we use the house a lot.

WHAT A PEACEFUL PLACE!

  • 5 of 5
With it being college Spring Break week, I purposely chose a location as far as possible from late-night loudness and crowded beaches. This fit the bill perfectly. Over the course of the week, I saw maybe two people on the beach. Even a day trip to sun at Hunting Island State Park was quiet, great for relaxing in my beach chair, reading and watching the dolphins (it does cost $5 a person to enter the park, but they take debit/credit card, and you can exit and enter all day with your receipt).

The house is very unpretentious, very much a family home. My Old English Sheepdog, Gideon, was quite comfortable. Set up his bed in the sunroom (where my daughter, her friend, and I had our coffee every morning), and he could look out the window and watch the squirrels. Super comfortable beds. Well-stocked kitchen. Tons of big, fluffy towels. A super-sized washing machine. We had a jigsaw puzzle going all week on the dining room table. Nice flat-screen TV.

Some of our favorite restaurants:
1) Went to the Bricks in Beaufort one night for dessert. The fried banana sundae was amazing.
2) Lunch at Lowcountry Produce and Market in Beaufort. Great burgers and sandwiches. Quaint little bakery for delicious desserts.
3) Lunch at Johnson Creek Tavern (on the way to Fripp Island) for the best she-crab soup I've ever had and pretty darn good crab cakes.
4) On our last night we went to Dockside on Lady's Island and splurged on the Dockside Dinner — lobster tail, crab legs, fried shrimp, scallops on a bed of lump crab meat, fried corn on the cob, baked potato and corn bread with a butter/sourcream/chive spread. All for $28.95. Was one of the best seafood meals I've ever had. And the atmosphere was very beachy/vacationy.

Did lots of thrifting, and the girls had their nails done at Happy Nails (there is an antique mall right next door, so while they did their thing, I walked around there).

The beach is not a swimming beach, but since we were there in March, it really didn't matter. But it's a GREAT walking beach, especially with a dog. The shelling looks like it would be spectacular, but it's mostly oyster and clam shells. I did find lots of great driftwood, an old ship buoy covered in barnacles, and lots of great shabby chic wood for projects.

I would DEFINITELY recommend this house if you're looking for a low-key, relaxing vacation. Bring a stack of books and a camera to capture all the picturesque scenery.

PEACEFUL RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
It would be hard to find a more idyllic spot. You arrive at the house after traveling through a long canopy of oaks and then see the strikingly beautiful red bark tree in the driveway and the view of the water behind. I spent a lot of time on the screened porch which must have been designed to allow the breeze off the water to flow straight through. I had no problem getting Wifi on the porch or anywhere else in the house, which is beautifully furnished, with comfortable leather chairs, comfortable beds with exceptionally nice sheets! I was happy to be able to share with friends who stopped by after a trip to the Sheldon church ruins which are only about an hour away. Had dinner with family at their favorite restaurant, Dockside in Port Royal, only a half hour away. Hunting Island State Park, with its beaches and walking trails are just down the road. All this and I was able to bring my dog too!

PEACE AND QUIET!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed in this lovely old house the week of June 21-28 with our two dogs. Throughout the booking process, the owner was very helpful and understanding, especially when our deposit got lost in the mail! When we arrived, we were pleased to note that the pictures didn't really do this place justice. The house was so nicely decorated that I was surprised they allowed children and pets, and everything was well cleaned and nicely stocked. It is a comfortable place, and we really enjoyed the huge screened porch. In fact, we ate every meal out there! Our dogs loved it, too, and kept a close eye on the local squirrels. There is also a good sized fenced dog yard that was so nice! Our doberman needs to play, and he had a great time out there with his ball.
We used the bedroom with the king bed, and it was quite comfortable, with nice linens on the bed. The bathrooms also had lots of towels, all very soft and fluffy. No thin sandpaper here!
The things we enjoyed most were really the lovely surroundings and the quiet. No traffic, no screaming children and parties going on that you find in some condos. The live oaks all around are so pretty, and you can get a nice little glimpse of the water from the porch. My husband loved the tiny little upstairs porch!
The owner is very truthful about the beach, thus earning 5 stars from me. We knew what to expect upon arrival. Don't come here expecting to really use the beach for anything except nice walks or observing nature. There are a lot of shells, and you really can't even put down a towel. However, Hunting Island is only a few minutes away, and the beach there is wonderful. You do have to pay a $5.00 per person fee, but you can come and go throughout the day. It was well worth it to us to have such a relaxing place to come back to each evening. It was close enough that we went out there with the dogs each morning, then took them back to the house and crated them through the heat of the day while we went back to the beach.
You must also note that the house is old, and old houses have old things in them. The doors are old, the cabinets are old. You may need to go to a different room to find the wifi "sweet spot". I have no patience with people who stay in a historic home, then complain when things don't work with modern precision.
This place is old, but that is the charm of it. I cannot stress enough how quiet and pretty it is here, and is especially nice for middle aged couples like us.

UPDATE FOR: FEEL AS IF WE HAVE RETURNED TO ANOTHE

  • 4 of 5
I am changing my star rating to a 4 instead of a 3. It deserves it and probably deserves a 5, except for the fact that some things had not been thoroughly cleaned. Maybe I'm just an OCD'er....LOL because they house and property was lovely, quiet, peaceful, and enjoyed the private beach. Lynn has been wonderful through the booking, my questions, lol, working to make our stay pleasant and what we would hope for. Thank you, Lynn, for being a great property owner and sharing your property and house with us. We look forward to returning to the Sound again, and hopefully, will be able to vacate in your lovely home again. We just can't say enough about how much we thoroughly enjoyed the house, the area, the peacefulness and quiet, and the atmosphere. My husband did a temporary repair on the hammock with some plastic bands. It was strong enough to hold him and he weighs about 193...LOL. I did not realize that you didn't know about it, and that is why I informed you. I believe in letting the property owner know when I see something, because you are right, you are not there all the time. My intentions are to help, not to embarrass, or offend. :-) Happy vacationing to all those who choose Coffin Point for their vacation and this lovely Circa 1890 house. There is a LOT of history that surrounds this location. Thanks Lynn!!!

FEEL AS IF WE HAVE RETURNED TO ANOTHER ERA.... 4

  • 3 of 5
Lynn, we lovvve your beautiful circa 1890 home. We are enjoying it immensely. The grounds are beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoy sitting in the chairs in the sunroom with them facing the water. The oaks are beautiful with the spanish moss. We sooo hope the remainder of the week crawls at a snail's pace. The only thing negative that I could sqymis that the kitchen sink was dirty when we got here. I sprayed it with the 'awesome' that you had under the sink. That took care of it without any scrubbing. Also, I have removed the dark-colored grease that had collected along the edge of the countertop near and about the stove. I also notice a lot of dust on the ceiling where we are sleeping in the queen sized bed. I can understand that due to the c3iling fan slinging dust about. It happens at home in my bedroom. The cleqner just needs to pay closer attention to detail....baseboards, etc, as well. Otherwise, very peaceful and relaxing and we love it. Oh, also, don't know if you are aware, but, the hammock has rotted, evidently, it is split down the middle....we would have loved to have tried it.
thanks for allowing us a nice, relaxing vacation. :-)

Owner's Response: I am so glad you loved my property.
I give my property mangers phone number to all of my guests and ask them to call her with any problems. If you thought there was too much dust, she could have sent the cleaning lady to redo. She could have also replaced the hammock, which I did not know had a problem. We can't fix what we don't know about.

HORRIBLE

  • 1 of 5
Failed to mention 2 houses right in the backyard ( not private) definitely not a beach to swim or sunbathe. House is nice and clean. If you are looking for an inside getaway. It is perfect. If you are like us and expecting a "private beach" look elsewhere. The beach is nothing but mush and Sharp shells. Not good for dogs (paws mays get cut) and there is a mean dog that May or may not be rabid. Take a chance on this one. I am a SC broker and the ad is total misrepresentation. Needs more pictures so really see what you are getting

Owner's Response: Well Tonya, I am glad you loved the house. I do have neighbors, but you never see them. The house is shielded from the neighbors by lush vegetation, so is very private/ The beach is totally private. No public access and I rarely see anyone on the beach. The property description says there are clam and oyster beds in the Sound, so there will be shells.
About 95% of my renters bring dogs, as do I. In the 6 years I have been renting this property, no one has complained about the shells on the beach or a dog getting a cut paw. You did not bring a dog, so I don't understand why you would have an opinion on that subject.
I think the beach is lovely, and so have all of my other renters. Sorry you did not like it.
