We grew up on the SC coast in the summers and have always wanted a home here. We found this place through a friend, and it has been just perfect for get away weekends. Rentals are limited, as we use the house a lot.

What a peaceful place!

With it being college Spring Break week, I purposely chose a location as far as possible from late-night loudness and crowded beaches. This fit the bill perfectly. Over the course of the week, I saw maybe two people on the beach. Even a day trip to sun at Hunting Island State Park was quiet, great for relaxing in my beach chair, reading and watching the dolphins (it does cost $5 a person to enter the park, but they take debit/credit card, and you can exit and enter all day with your receipt).

The house is very unpretentious, very much a family home. My Old English Sheepdog, Gideon, was quite comfortable. Set up his bed in the sunroom (where my daughter, her friend, and I had our coffee every morning), and he could look out the window and watch the squirrels. Super comfortable beds. Well-stocked kitchen. Tons of big, fluffy towels. A super-sized washing machine. We had a jigsaw puzzle going all week on the dining room table. Nice flat-screen TV.

Some of our favorite restaurants:
1) Went to the Bricks in Beaufort one night for dessert. The fried banana sundae was amazing.
2) Lunch at Lowcountry Produce and Market in Beaufort. Great burgers and sandwiches. Quaint little bakery for delicious desserts.
3) Lunch at Johnson Creek Tavern (on the way to Fripp Island) for the best she-crab soup I've ever had and pretty darn good crab cakes.
4) On our last night we went to Dockside on Lady's Island and splurged on the Dockside Dinner — lobster tail, crab legs, fried shrimp, scallops on a bed of lump crab meat, fried corn on the cob, baked potato and corn bread with a butter/sourcream/chive spread. All for $28.95. Was one of the best seafood meals I've ever had. And the atmosphere was very beachy/vacationy.

Did lots of thrifting, and the girls had their nails done at Happy Nails (there is an antique mall right next door, so while they did their thing, I walked around there).

The beach is not a swimming beach, but since we were there in March, it really didn't matter. But it's a GREAT walking beach, especially with a dog. The shelling looks like it would be spectacular, but it's mostly oyster and clam shells. I did find lots of great driftwood, an old ship buoy covered in barnacles, and lots of great shabby chic wood for projects.

I would DEFINITELY recommend this house if you're looking for a low-key, relaxing vacation. Bring a stack of books and a camera to capture all the picturesque scenery.

Best kept secret on St. Helena

I love Coffin Plantation, this house is right beside the Plantation House....in fact, this house was the plantation keepers house. If you love bed and breakfast inns, you will fall in love with this home. It s like stepping back in time, from the moment your ride through the avenue of oaks and arrive at the home, which is on the water. The lot is huge, there is a shed we parked our golf cart under, and to the left side of house is a fenced in area right off from the mud room, which was nice, the dogs didn't have to be on leash all the time. There are beautiful live oak trees everywhere as you walk down to the beach, even at my age, I couldn't resist climbing them with the grand kids.Late one evening, I was walking down the beach, and three deer ran right pass me.
Inside the house you will find all the moderations of a home. Here you are truly renting someone's home not a rental property, her decorations and elegant furniture reflect that. I would rent this property again and highly recommend it. Thank you soo much for sharing your home with my family.

Relaxing Week in a Beautiful Home

My two young grandchildren and dogs loved our peaceful and relaxing week in this historic home. The secluded location was wonderfully quiet and restful. The listing description and photos are accurate, but the house and setting were even more beautiful than I expected. The road leading to the house is lined by huge live oaks draped with Spanish moss. We enjoyed long walks along the road, often seeing small deer in the woods. The private beach was perfect for long walks, watching dolphins and boats, and collecting shells. The hammock by the beach was shaded by large trees most of the day and provided a lovely view of the beach. The glass-walled sun room was a restful place for reading, looking out at the water, and watching the children play outside. The house was much larger than I anticipated, tastefully decorated with very comfortable beds and other furniture. The well-equipped kitchen had everything necessary for cooking meals when we didn't eat out. Several days we went to Hunting Island State Park, just a few minutes from the house, to walk nature trails, climb to the top of the lighthouse, and play in the surf. This was a perfect place for a laid-back vacation. My grandchildren are already asking if we can stay there again next year when they have fall break from school, and I hope we'll be able to do that. I highly recommend this property and look forward to having an opportunity to stay there again. The owner was polite, informative, and responsive to questions, and the property was very clean and well-maintained.

Disappointed

My sisters and I don't get together but once a year, and we were really looking forward to this trip to SC. It had been raining before we got there, so we were expecting dampness. What we were not expecting was the smell of mustiness and mildew before we even opened the door. It was really bad, and did not get better as the week went on.
We swallowed allergy pills everyday and my oldest sister started coughing every time we walked in the door.
There was a clause in the rental agreement about being charged $50 if we left the grill dirty. The grill was covered in grease when we got there. The property manager came out and said to open the doors in the morning to help air out the house, and the owners had a big get together there on the 4th and must have left the grill dirty. She said she would 'cover ' for us so we wouldn't get charged. So, we cleaned the grill twice. Once for them, and once for us when we were done.
The water didn't want to go down the drains, so we told her about that too.
One of my sisters and I walked out to the water, only to look back and see our older sister waving to us! We hurried back to find the washer was pouring a half inch of water all over the floor. Wading through that to stop the washer with all the electric in there was a little scary. The hose had pulled out of the drain. We 'fixed' it. We thought this might be where some of the odor was coming from, if all that water was going under the house. The property manager said she would call the plumber.
There was supposed to be a nice view of the water across the 600 ft back yard, and I suppose there was; but the trees hanging down left only a sliver of a window to see the water from the house. Not a wide water view from the house.
The furnishings were very nice and tasteful. The beds very comfortable. A nice old home, but needs some looking after.

Great stay in a lovely property

Visiting from the UK with my wife and two teenage daughters, we had a lovely stay and found the house very comfortable and when we needed assistance with a minor issue it was resolved quickly and efficiently. The location was excellent and we recommend the nearby Shrimp Shack and the beaches on Hunting Island for swimming/sunbathing. Charleston is certainly worth a visit with beautiful houses and streets. Beaufort was a regular haunt for us and if you like your food have a lunch (or two) at Plums.
Just love South Carolina!
