A private, cozy cabin in a beautiful location, and an unforgettable experience for two old friends.
I'd scoured the VRBO website, among many others, for a rental cabin in southern Utah that was genuinely secluded - not the ubiquitous close-up shot where zooming out reveals that the place is actually part of a subdivision, but a proper cabin with some space around it, some privacy, and most of all, a place that blended effortlessly and humbly with Utah's gorgeous landscapes. A good friend and I go on annual trips where we like to get outside to hike, explore, and enjoy good food and drink, and the more rustic the setting, for us, the better. Finally found the XbarH Mesa Cabin, close to our departure date, and instantly got excited. Emailed Michele for details, specifically regarding the layout of the property, and she promptly got back to me with information - even a detailed satellite map! A joy to correspond with. Arrived and was struck immediately by the warmth of both JC and Michele; both fantastic, friendly people. The cabin itself, along with the surrounding property, is stunning. During our time there (5 days/nights), we hiked The Narrows (the 2-day, top-down route), climbed Angels Landing so early one morning that we were practically alone up there, mountain biked around Navajo Lake, climbed around in the gorgeous slot canyon a short trip from the lodge, and stuffed ourselves with buffalo ribs, rattlesnake, and cobbler at the nearby Buffalo Bistro. We barbecued enormous feasts using the charcoal barbecue, and spent nights putting our tired feet up on the porch, cold drinks close at hand, or clambering up the red rock behind the cabin in the light of the full moon. The cabin was spotless and cozy, and JC and Michele supply staples such as coffee, dishwashing soap, and charcoal, so the annoyance of having to buy staples for only a few days away is averted. There are lots of family reviews for this property, and I fully agree that families will love the Mesa Cabin, but if you're looking for a place to spend some one-on-one quality time with an old friend, the Mesa Cabin works for that too. Michele and JC are the perfect hosts, as they have that rare, all-important ability to understand their guests' needs without anyone saying a word. In our case, as wonderful as the two of them were, and as certain as we both were that they'd be fun to hang out with, we were looking most for some alone time, a true feeling of privacy, and they very easily and graciously helped us out with that experience. An absolutely incredible, very special place indeed.
