Prepare to clean!

We arrived after some other guests had left that day, & the owner did not have the house cleaned for us, although we paid a separate "cleaning fee." Upon talking to her on the phone, we learned she did not have any intention of having it cleaned until after we left. She complained about the cost of cleaning & was disappointed that the previous guests did not leave it clean it for us. I doubt that most lodging guests would expect to do more than straighten up & take out trash upon check-out, but we do assume that rental accomodations will be cleaned & sanitized before we check-in. Anyway, the toilet was disgusting, the bath mats dirty, the floors & all other living surfaces obviously used & smeared. We ended up being too grossed out to live with it, so we split the duties & cleaned the house ourselves, inc the toilet. I must say it put a damper on our excitement to be on vacation, & we will never rent this place again.
The cottage is cute & looks as though it was renovated & decorated in recent years, but the entire property is neglected, the yard strewn w/ junk, debris & dead plants. Also, if you have kayaks or boats, the dock is adorning the hillside, so there is no launch place on the property, nor a place to sit on the water.
Owner's Response: Dear guest, thank you very much for your comment. Having all of my guest feel comfortable in my home is very important to me. I really do care to have them enjoy my home and their vacation. Please know your comments have already been taken into great consideration and all efforts have already been put into place to ensure the cleaners arrive in a timely manner in the future. We apologize for any miscommunications. We do hope that our immediate efforts to call and have the cleaners come out, calling your back when you arrived and complained as well as you receiving a free night put some ease to your despondency. It was unfortunate you had to have any uncomfortable feelings initially. So sorry for that.
In the future also, if there are any problems with getting your Kayaks or other water equipment into the water from our permit area, please know, there is a public beach and launch less than a quarter of a mile down the road. It is very convenient and accessible. All of the neighbors in the area are very helpful and kind and will point you in the right direction if needed. Plus I am very happy to provide directions if needed. So sorry we did not get a chance to discuss this ahead of time.
