Nice apartment, not well maintained

It is our last night here in Redcliffe. The reason for the average review is mainly due to the poor maintenance. The apartment is very spacious, perfectly located close to the beach and Boardwalk. The staff who manage the reservations and front desk are very helpful and friendly. Booking the reservation from our home in Canada was easy especially with the help from Sam. The apartment is starting to show its wear (broken window, switch box falling off in the main room). Our problem was the apartment wasn't sufficiently prepared for our arrival. Despite signs everywhere about $50 fees imposed for not cleaning the Bbq and a $50 fee for suds in the hot tub, both were not clean. The bbq in fact was disgustingly dirty with grease dripping from the griddle. The hot tub foamed up after about 5 minutes. Also, The ice maker in the fridge was frozen solid and did not work. Several light bulbs were also burnt out. The front desk responded very quickly to get maintenance up. The maintenance guy, replaced light bulbs, unclogged our bathroom sink and poured defoaming agent into the hot tub. We showed him the frozen ice maker but he did nothing about it. He looked at the bbq and said that is how they leave them in Australia. We spent two hours scrubbing the bbq without an offer from maintenance to have it cleaned. We did not use the hot tub again as it should have been drained but the guy said he didn't have time to do (it takes 4 hours) It's unfortunate because all other aspects of the apartment are great.

Owner's Response: Firstly let me apologise that you were not completely satisfied with your stay at our apartment. We take maintenance and cleanliness very seriously and we rely on the cleaning service to check any maintenance issues and report them to the manager so we can get them repaired in a timely manner. The spa cleanliness and chemical levels are checked before every guest enters and the foaming issue only became apparent after the pump was running for some time. The light bulbs are halogen and I understand they were also checked before arrival, however they do burn out quite quickly so a couple not working is of no surprise. For this reason we keep a good supply of spare bulbs in the apartment itself so we can replace them when needed. The switch box I have just become aware of and it has been repaired today as has the ice maker in the fridge. The broken window mentioned is in fact a crack which is in a high area of the apartment well out of reach. It was caused by the application of window tinting as part of our ongoing improvements to the apartment which has expanded from the heat of the sun on it and caused a pressure crack. As it is out of normal reach and does not cause a safety or leaking issue we have deferred the repair until we do the full maintenance check which takes place every few months. The bbq is an issue and should have been cleaned more thoroughly before arrival. I am making new arrangements for cleaning to ensure there is no repeat of these issues. Best Regards Mike

It was a show stopper for all the guests. They all were extremely satisfied with my selection and gave me a huge hug. Michael, the owner, although out of the country, was very helpful in responding quickly to any questions I had regarding the apartment. The property had all the kitchen supplies, furniture and bedding that we needed. I can only think of small areas for improvement. We didn't see the instruction book until someone happen to run across it in an effort to turn on the television. Once found, it was very helpful. The jacuzzi takes several hours to get heated up and the instructions should be in more detail on how to use it. The TV was a little difficult to figure out, but eventually we got that as well. There wasn't quite enough toilet paper and the cleaning supplies were limited. But I think Michael will "hear" this and make adjustments since he seems like he cares very much about the property and that his guests are happy. I highly recommend this for your holiday retreat.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your kind review. I normally leave the instructions for the tv in full view however the cleaners do their thing and tend to put them away somewhere. :-) The cleaning is done by an in house company and they put in a standard amount of supplies however I have had this noted before and will request an increase in supply for our longer bookings. As for the jacuzzi, electricity is very expensive in Australia so we request from tenants that the temp is left at 32 degrees when they leave to keep costs down in case the next tenants are either not in for a few days or may not use the spa, This keeps costs down as well as ensuring the sanity of the spa if not used for a while, however guests are welcome to set whatever temperature they prefer, I realise that the notes are not clear on this and will make amendments.
