Beautiful summer getaway location, the cottage is a picture perfect place to bike or run---the lake is eight miles around and is designated as a scenic route on almost its entirety. Private lakefront beach area 200 ft. long. Private, full-size dock can accommodate two 20ft. boats. Two additional docks to swim between or are perfect for sunbathing. Full use of private kayak or canoe on the lake, mandatory life jackets provided.
For hikers the choices are numerous. There is the beautiful bicycling route on the Housatonic Covered Bridge Trail, the Bull Bridge Road which joins the Appalachian Trail which is 20 minutes away in nearby Kent, and Kent Falls State Park on Route 7 with its spectacular waterfall. In the fall Lake Wauramaug becomes a beautiful back drop to the changing of the leaves.
There are many top rated restaurants nearby including The Community Table (10 minutes down the road on Route 202), The West Grill in Litchfield (a 15 minute drive), and The Hopkins Inn (opposite the house) on the lake with spectacular views and its own winery. In addition there is Olivia right down the road, which has delicious Italian food and wine.
As for shopping there are many places to head. New Preston is just two minutes from the house, and although it has only six or seven shops they are all intriguing. Woodbury--15 minutes from the house-- is famous for its antiques. Litchfield, just down the road on Route 202, is a kind of preppy heaven, and Kent has more than its share of galleries. All of them are close to the house. Northwest Ct. is beautiful whichever direction you head.
We rented the cottage for the month of September, and had a great experience. There are 2 full bathrooms (one on each floor), with 3 bedrooms downstairs, with additional space to sleep upstairs...so there was room for our extended family to stay. There is a great dock for swimming and boating, with a canoe and kayak provided by the owner. We especially loved the screened-in porch, and the outside patio area with a large gas grill/comfortable table for fun meals overlooking the lake. There is a cozy fireplace downstairs for evening fires on cooler evenings. We loved walking and biking around the lake, and hiking on many beautiful nearby trails. We enjoyed the great restaurants nearby, our favorite being the Hopkins Inn. Phyllis, the owner, was very nice, and very accessible, bending over backwards to make us happy. We would definitely recommend this cottage.
