Sausalito House Boat Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (sleeps 6)+ convertible bed(s)

For the first time, one of the world's most spectacular homes is now available as a vacation rental. This is the American equivalent of renting a castle in Spain or an ancient stone villa in Tuscany. Yet with the luxury and conveniences of a five star hotel.

The SS City of Seattle (Yellow Ferry) was originally launched in 1888. She is the oldest surviving ferryboat on the West Coast. The Ferry combines luxury and convenience in a spectacular and memorable setting. Surrounded by open water, she is simply the best houseboat in the best berth. Suitable for couples, families or special events, the Yellow Ferry offers the vacation experience of a lifetime.

The master suite on the Yellow Ferry is over 2,600 square feet, plus an 800 sq ft, Deck. One enters the Ferry into an open great room that is over 1,200 square ft, but divided into separate areas for dining and lounging. Surrounded by floor to ceiling windows looking out to the bay, the main room is both spacious and intimate. The original deck consists of three-inch thick, virgin Douglas Fir, inlaid with Teak. You will quickly find there is a timeless and soothing quality to being surrounded by 120 year old wooden timbers and beams.

The carpeted master bedroom features a new, California King bed. Floor to ceiling windows provide expansive views through the original paddle wheel to the Bay. Large walk-in closets add to the feeling of luxury. The private bathroom also has bay views and marble counters.

Down below, the second bedroom and bath have windows located right above waterline, where seals and waterfowl can swim up and eyeball you.

The kitchen has just been remodeled with a new Thermidor five-burner range and a double electric oven. The set up is perfect for gourmet meals or reheating your leftovers from one of the many excellent local restaurants. The kitchen is abundantly stocked with all the necessary pots, pans, utensils and appliances. There is a full table setting for 12 and uncharacteristically for a rental, all the knives have been freshly sharpened.

The Ferry is conveniently located between the natural beauty of the northern coast and the cosmopolitan charms of San Francisco. You can attend almost any event in the City and be home at the Ferry before you would find a parking place in San Francisco. A small library adjacent to the kitchen is stocked with books and tip and local attractions,

There are an infinite variety of diversions to be found within a 30 minute drive of the boat. But often the best thing to do is simply sit by the bay with a good book, occasionally looking up to see the harbor seals or migrating waterfowl.

The Ferry is owned by the same couple who own the harbor. We live next door and can be there to assist with any of your questions.

Please be aware that when then you stay on a houseboat, you are a guest in a close knit community of fellow houseboaters. These home owners have chosen to live on the water because of a shared love of nature and a considerate community. It is essential that you respect the community rights to peace and privacy and conduct your residency the same way you would expect from a next-door neighbor.

About Chris Tellis

The Tellis family adopted the City of Seattle in 1956, when we discovered her beached and abandoned along the Oakland estuary. We brought her back to Sausalito, fixed her up, and in various configurations we have been living here for the past 55 years. The boat is now owned and maintained by Chris Tellis and Isabella Kirkland who live at the other end the boat. Both of us have careers in the arts and environment. We love living on the water and are delighted to be able to share this magical setting with others from around the world.

Chris Tellis purchased this house boat in 1956

Why Chris Tellis chose Sausalito

I have lived on the Sausalito waterfront since 1953. There is no place like Sausalito and southern Marin Couty. Even after seven years on the East Coast and two years in London and various other watering holes, I could not imagine living anywhere else. The Bay Area provides the perfect synthesis of intellectual stimulation and sybaritic diversion. I love New York, Europe and Asia, but in the end I would always want to come back to the water here in Sausalito, Chris Tellis

What makes this house boat unique

Living on an majestic ship, surrounded by history and beautiful wood, watching the sailboats, the harbor seals, the pelicans and migrating birds, there is nothing like this anywhere else. With the quiet of the Ferry, you feel you are miles away, yet just out the window is a water wonderland and a short drive away is one of the world's great cities. It is astonishing that a place can feel so removed yet be so close to a cultural epicenter.

best trip ever!

We spent a week for Bay to Breakers in May. The setting and home was quiet, quality, and close i see to multiple day outings. Owners were kind, responsive, thoughtful. I would recommend this (and have) to anyone I care for:).....If I could give 10 stars, I would!

We spent our family spring break vacation on the yellow ferry and it was BY FAR the best vacation we have ever had. The convenience to all the local attractions is just the tip of the ice berg. I can't tell you what its like to stay on such a beautiful, comfortable piece of art and history. It is truly an experience of a lifetime!

Great!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just returned from a weeks stay aboard our floating vacation. Our time there was unique and wonderful. Waking each morning to the view through a Paddle wheel to the Sausalito coast and going to sleep each night to the sound of silence was wonderful. The kitchen is completely stocked with spices and cooking utensils which made our stay so much more enjoyable...we only ate out twice. We highly recommend "Salcito" for dinner, their "Crab Enchilada" is delicious. We highly recommend "The Yellow Ferry" for a uniquely different experience.

No words can describe staying at the Yellow Ferry!

  • 5 of 5
The Yellow Ferry is amazing! The history, the ambiance, the character... are incredible. Waking up to the view of the water from the paddle wheel bedroom, and then walking across the 100 year old wood floors to the breakfast nook was just one of the great moments of our stay on the Yellow Ferry. The owners, Chris and Isabel are generous and made us feel very welcome. We will certainly returning to the Yellow Ferry again! It was worth every penny!

Unique, wonderful place

  • 5 of 5
Our family stayed at the Yellow Ferry for 5 days and it was great! Chris was fantastic from our first communication and through out our stay. We arrived very late, almost midnight and Isabelle came over to check on us. We can not say enough about how kind and thoughtful both Chris and Isabelle are. The Yellow Ferry is truly a wonderful place to spend some time. The view is unsurpassed. The place is spacious and well appointed. It's a great location for exploring San Francisco, Napa, Muir Woods, and the surrounding areas. Our boys had a wonderful time on the kayaks. My husband travels for a living and he really enjoyed the experience of staying on the Yellow Ferry. The entire family simply loved it!

Uniquely wonderful, homey yet sophisticated

  • 5 of 5
The Yellow Ferryboat was exactly as described - and more. It is a lovingly and eclectically decorated houseboat in the midst of a nicely maintained houseboat community. Two baskets of gifts welcomed us upon arrival - wine and cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurt, bread and more. The home was sparkling clean and well-dusted, no small feat given the art and craft pieces from around the world.

The master bed was at once firm yet pillowy soft. I haven't had such a comfortable night's sleep in the best of hotels and I travel far too many nights each year. I actually stripped the bed because I wanted to know the make of the mattress (and then promptly left my notes behind).

Our party of four had planned to go out more than we actually did. Ultimately, we enjoyed sitting around playing card games, catching up on a bit of reading, lounging in front of the fireplace (hint: you must turn on the fireplace itself before the remote works), and eating Thai takeout from Kitti's Place (cheap, good, within a mile).

I grew up on an island and on the water. We owned boats and I had friends who lived on boats. A couple of things to consider here: 1. most of the long-term resident houseboats in Sausalito harbor, such as the Yellow Ferry, are on concrete bases that render them extremely stable - the rocking, creaking and lapping of waves that I am used to in a boat were not part of the sounds of the Ferry at night, rather it was a blissful near-silence, 2. You are renting roughly half of the Ferry, and need to be respectful of the residents in the other half (and note that sound travels across the water as well), 3. Even in mid-summer, Sausalito can be cool on the water, with evenings dropping into the low 50s - this was part of the reason we chose this destination as it made for the perfect weather for enjoying the fireplace and snuggling in the luxurious bed, but if you had dreams of swimming off the boat deck you might be disappointed, and 4. Don't turn on the toaster oven and the microwave at the same time, you'll blow a fuse (lesson learned on our part....and quickly resolved by our hostess living next door).

I would move here in a heartbeat if I didn't have to dust and maintain this quirky, stunning, fun, homey, sophisticated, bohemian piece of American history. Luckily, it was instead available to enjoy, leaving the heavy lifting to others.

Thank you so very much for making the Yellow Ferryboat available.

The prime berths for floating homes, are those at the end of the docks with a view to open water. With the end berth, in a small, exclusive marina, the Yellow Ferry has the best location in San Francisco Bay. Surrounded by open water on all sides, you can fully experience houseboat living at its finest. If you are interested in water sports, the ferry is fully stocked with kayaks, stand up paddle boards, sailboat, surfboards, boogie boards and fins.

Sausalito itself, is unquestionably the ideal location in the Bay Area. With a perfect, Mediterranean climate, Sausalito will be sunny and warm when San Francisco is covered in fog.

Sausalito is also at the epicenter of a range of activities that can accommodate any taste, from fine dining to high octane sports. Sausalito is often described as the best neighborhood in San Francisco as you are closer to the museums and theater and restaurants than most residences in the city. You are five minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge and fifteen minutes from the Fine Arts Museums. Yet you are also just ten minutes from the beaches, Muir Woods and the National Parks along the coast. Further afield you are 30 minutes from the Wine Country and three hours from Lake Tahoe.

You can surf in the morning and eat in a three star restaurant for lunch. Spend the evening at the ballet, the opera or hear some of the best live music in the country.

Or best of all, just relax in the peace and quiet of the ferryboat.
