Photos and Description of the Sausalito vacation house boat rental
2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (sleeps 6)+ convertible bed(s)

For the first time, one of the world's most spectacular homes is now available as a vacation rental. This is the American equivalent of renting a castle in Spain or an ancient stone villa in Tuscany. Yet with the luxury and conveniences of a five star hotel.

The SS City of Seattle (Yellow Ferry) was originally launched in 1888. She is the oldest surviving ferryboat on the West Coast. The Ferry combines luxury and convenience in a spectacular and memorable setting. Surrounded by open water, she is simply the best houseboat in the best berth. Suitable for couples, families or special events, the Yellow Ferry offers the vacation experience of a lifetime.

The master suite on the Yellow Ferry is over 2,600 square feet, plus an 800 sq ft, Deck. One enters the Ferry into an open great room that is over 1,200 square ft, but divided into separate areas for dining and lounging. Surrounded by floor to ceiling windows looking out to the bay, the main room is both spacious and intimate. The original deck consists of three-inch thick, virgin Douglas Fir, inlaid with Teak. You will quickly find there is a timeless and soothing quality to being surrounded by 120 year old wooden timbers and beams.

The carpeted master bedroom features a new, California King bed. Floor to ceiling windows provide expansive views through the original paddle wheel to the Bay. Large walk-in closets add to the feeling of luxury. The private bathroom also has bay views and marble counters.

Down below, the second bedroom and bath have windows located right above waterline, where seals and waterfowl can swim up and eyeball you.

The kitchen has just been remodeled with a new Thermidor five-burner range and a double electric oven. The set up is perfect for gourmet meals or reheating your leftovers from one of the many excellent local restaurants. The kitchen is abundantly stocked with all the necessary pots, pans, utensils and appliances. There is a full table setting for 12 and uncharacteristically for a rental, all the knives have been freshly sharpened.

The Ferry is conveniently located between the natural beauty of the northern coast and the cosmopolitan charms of San Francisco. You can attend almost any event in the City and be home at the Ferry before you would find a parking place in San Francisco. A small library adjacent to the kitchen is stocked with books and tip and local attractions,

There are an infinite variety of diversions to be found within a 30 minute drive of the boat. But often the best thing to do is simply sit by the bay with a good book, occasionally looking up to see the harbor seals or migrating waterfowl.

The Ferry is owned by the same couple who own the harbor. We live next door and can be there to assist with any of your questions.

Please be aware that when then you stay on a houseboat, you are a guest in a close knit community of fellow houseboaters. These home owners have chosen to live on the water because of a shared love of nature and a considerate community. It is essential that you respect the community rights to peace and privacy and conduct your residency the same way you would expect from a next-door neighbor.

About Chris Tellis

The Tellis family adopted the City of Seattle in 1956, when we discovered her beached and abandoned along the Oakland estuary. We brought her back to Sausalito, fixed her up, and in various configurations we have been living here for the past 55 years. The boat is now owned and maintained by Chris Tellis and Isabella Kirkland who live at the other end the boat. Both of us have careers in the arts and environment. We love living on the water and are delighted to be able to share this magical setting with others from around the world.

Chris Tellis purchased this house boat in 1956
Why Chris Tellis chose Sausalito

I have lived on the Sausalito waterfront since 1953. There is no place like Sausalito and southern Marin Couty. Even after seven years on the East Coast and two years in London and various other watering holes, I could not imagine living anywhere else. The Bay Area provides the perfect synthesis of intellectual stimulation and sybaritic diversion. I love New York, Europe and Asia, but in the end I would always want to come back to the water here in Sausalito, Chris Tellis

What makes this house boat unique

Living on an majestic ship, surrounded by history and beautiful wood, watching the sailboats, the harbor seals, the pelicans and migrating birds, there is nothing like this anywhere else. With the quiet of the Ferry, you feel you are miles away, yet just out the window is a water wonderland and a short drive away is one of the world's great cities. It is astonishing that a place can feel so removed yet be so close to a cultural epicenter.

The prime berths for floating homes, are those at the end of the docks with a view to open water. With the end berth, in a small, exclusive marina, the Yellow Ferry has the best location in San Francisco Bay. Surrounded by open water on all sides, you can fully experience houseboat living at its finest. If you are interested in water sports, the ferry is fully stocked with kayaks, stand up paddle boards, sailboat, surfboards, boogie boards and fins.

Sausalito itself, is unquestionably the ideal location in the Bay Area. With a perfect, Mediterranean climate, Sausalito will be sunny and warm when San Francisco is covered in fog.

Sausalito is also at the epicenter of a range of activities that can accommodate any taste, from fine dining to high octane sports. Sausalito is often described as the best neighborhood in San Francisco as you are closer to the museums and theater and restaurants than most residences in the city. You are five minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge and fifteen minutes from the Fine Arts Museums. Yet you are also just ten minutes from the beaches, Muir Woods and the National Parks along the coast. Further afield you are 30 minutes from the Wine Country and three hours from Lake Tahoe.

You can surf in the morning and eat in a three star restaurant for lunch. Spend the evening at the ballet, the opera or hear some of the best live music in the country.

Or best of all, just relax in the peace and quiet of the ferryboat.

In our experience it all depends on what you are looking for, and trying to match your expectations. The Yellow Ferry is everything it is represented to be: luxurious, very private, extraordinarily unique, and 30 minutes from San Francisco to the south and Muir Woods, Stinson Beach to the north, just a tad longer to Berkeley, and an hour to wine country. Chris Tellis and famijly have done an incredible job. The rental side of the ferry used to be his mother's quarters, and is furnished with her collections gathered through extensive global travel, her cookbooks and very well equipped kitchen, and more. It is the opposite of sterile, but is in no way cluttered. Each day we found different treasures we hadn't seen before. The extensive use of glass throughout the boat couples one to the bay. The view from the master bedroom, through a wall of glass, the ferry's paddle wheel and across the bay to the Tiburon Hills is a marvelous way to start the day. The south wall of the living room is comprised of six large glass panels that you can open completely joining the inside to the deck outside.
The Ferry was ready for our arrival, clean, well supplied with the basics, with a lovely gift basket on the kitchen counter containing some wine, cheese and a variety of snacks we enjoyed throughout the week. Groceries are a few miles away, there are restaurants and a deli within walking distance of the dock. Chris has written a guide that is well thought out and very useful. His critique of the three restaurants we tried was right on.
The Yellow Ferry Marina, the boat's home, is quite lovely, not what you see around you in the harbor. Adequate parking, the plantings are great, the docks in wonderful condition, and the neighbors friendly. The fleet of shopping carts in the parking lot make it easy to transfer luggage or groceries to the boat. Chris was in the process of constructing a pergola type structure on one of the docks when we were there.
We would repeat in a heartbeat.

Exceeded Expectations!

The Yellow Ferry was the perfect place to stay for our trip to San Francisco. It was clean, private, charming, large, and convenient to many attractions. It's hard to say what we loved best...sitting by the fireplace at night reading, making breakfast in the gourmet kitchen, opening the large doors to let the warm breeze into the living room, or sitting on the sundeck enjoying the view. It was the perfect place to return to after a day of sightseeing. The hosts were so kind to leave a basket of treats for us when we arrived (after a long trip with 4 children). We were sad to leave but know that if we ever go back to this area we will DEFINITELY stay here again!

Magical!

Two families enjoyed an amazing week together on the most beautiful home! The Yellow Ferry is a treasure trove of collectibles gathered from all over the world - the art, furniture, rugs, glass blown lamps and the layout could be from an interior design magazine titled "Boho Chic".
The home is extremely comfortable and BIG - plenty of room for all of us to enjoy without feeling cramped (that says a lot when you have young children with you!) We enjoyed beautiful weather, observing wildlife from each and every room and walking throughout the darling & colorful floating home community here in Sausalito.
I can't recommend the home enough - truly spectacular.

Magical!

The photos online do not do justice to this magnificent home - the Yellow Ferry is like walking through a "treasure chest" filled with art, rugs and collectibles from all over the world with bits and pieces from the bay thrown in - it's a true "Boho Chic" spread that is completely comfortable and welcoming throughout.
We are local to the area and managed to have a walk through the home before agreeing to stay there and from that day on I was so excited for our "staycation." The Yellow Ferry is a real destination place amongst a wonderfully colorful floating home community here in Sausalito. I was delighted to share it with family who were visiting (young children included & it was completely safe!) and with friends from the area, the YF owner Chris was kind enough to join us during a night of cocktails and patiently explained the history of the ferry to everyone. It's a magical place.

Fabulous!

Our stay at the Yellow Ferry was magical! Greg graciously showed us all around the boat when we arrived and made us feel welcome. We felt so relaxed and happy surrounded by the water with beautiful views. The art and books we discovered throughout the boat were fascinating. We appreciated the folder Chris left of lists of favorite restaurants and activities nearby. We delighted in the comfort and spaciousness, the beautiful light. Our son visited us while we were there and watching him singing and playing the banjo (softly!) by the firelight is a memory we will cherish for the rest of our lives.
We look forward to planning another vacation at the Yellow Ferry soon and have already recommended it to friends and family.
