Photos and Description of the Paul Smiths vacation lodge rental
COME - Listen to Loons calling Spring in the Adirondacks!

On the shores of an isolated lake high above its own island complete with an Adirondack lean-to, you’ll discover the camping dream of a lifetime just inside the six million acre Adirondack State Park in northern New York. Look closely to see a large circular tent called a 'yurt' because it blends so well into the forest from its promontory overlooking Upper St. Regis Lake. Beach your canoe and take the short path up to your week’s home with panoramic view of the mountain woods. All your gear will be waiting on the deck when you arrive. There are eight screened windows through which to muse on the postcard panorama. Catch the morning breeze from the lake through the open French doors leading to the deck overlook. You can see the wooded island just below with its bridge and path to the your canoe and swimming dock. Pristine lake waters are deep enough for diving from the island’s dock, and when the sun shines, that's most of the day.

A DAY-LONG PADDLE ADVENTURE that covers three lakes and a river, in addition to a canoe portage back the way you came in -- is a rewarding, if rigorous, day’s outing. For the marathoners - a quick early morning run up St. Regis Mountain. There’s an antique fire tower perched on the very top that you can just see from your comfortable deck chair.

It DOES rain in the Adirondacks, but you’ve just remembered the book you tucked in your rucksack. There’s wood for the stove and a lamp by the chair. With your cup refilled and only a curved canvas wall gently moving between you and the elements … you can be content.

SMOKING: Care and common sense apply with all fire in the forest. Just to the right of the steps as you come down from the deck is a garden hose with nozzle; it is permanently on for guest use as needed. Smoking is permitted everywhere onsite except inside the yurt and bathhouse. Ashtrays are provided for the porch; empty into the wood stove inside.

CAMPFIRES on the island must be personally attended at all times and doused out completely. $5. bundle firewood available at Lake Clear Jct on your way to camp.

HOUSEHOLD APPOINTMENTS: Monogrammed linens, bedding, pillows, quilts, throws, kitchen and bath towels are provided. If you like large swim towels, you are welcome to bring a couple. There is a pull-out drying rack inside the yurt in the dressing area. Please do not drape your wet towels and clothing over the rustic railing to dry; it is most unappealing when viewed from the lake. Full propane tank for the gas grill on deck. We provide full housekeeping services before your arrival and again after you leave. If you recycle, please do so while you're in camp and we'll take it out by motorboat for you to take to your own recycling center - alas we lack one here in the North country. There is a covered plastic container beneath the yurt steps for your trash; removal is included with your rental.

BATH HOUSE: Old-fashioned round overhead shower; sink w/mirror and Swedish composting toilet are located just steps from the door and accessed from the deck. See photos.

Just inside the six million acre Adirondack State Park in Northern New York, on the shores of a pristine lake in the St. Regis Canoe Wilderness perched high above its own island w/private dock, canoe, Adirondack lean-to, and campfire you’ll discover the natural world in an exclusive camping adventure of your dreams. This adventure requires that we provide canoe/paddles and RT motorboat transport to the isolated site.

Canoeing, swimming, climbing and enjoying the varied wildlife might be your daily activity followed by campfire evenings and a moonlight paddle. Just across the bay is our guest dock for climbers up St. Regis Mtn. - take a picnic. The view is definitely worth the strenuous hike! Return for an afternoon swim w/beverages & a book on the dock. Later on stroll across Island Bridge and up the narrow path to the deck of Topridge Overlook yurt for a grilled supper and often a memorable sunset to be seen across the Lake behind the mountain.

Once you see the vast wilderness on the back side of the mountain, you may choose to canoe to the largest of the ponds you saw from the top on another day. Plot your course by the maps we provide - '7 Carries' and you're there for a lazy afternoon of serene, peaceful privacy far, far away from cares and stress. Rejuvenate yourself with a swim in crystal Adirondack waters.

.'As we return to the yurt that night, our last, it occurs to me that these structures are the best way yet to combine luxury and wilderness. I want the trip to last for a week, at least.' ~ a satisfied guest.

Amazing Experience of a Lifetime

5 of 5
Submitted: July 19, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
The incredible experience of truly feeling at one with nature while having all creature comfort needs met luxuriously was absolutely magical. As an avid traveller who has vacationed on several continents, I believe this setting is unique. Each morning, awakening to the call of the loons and the view of mist rising from the lake is breath taking. Days of canoeing and swimming or quiet reading by the lakeside provide a feeling of peace that is often ellusive. Sipping wine on the deck, after a fabulous BBQ dinner, provided total relaxation. The sunsets were magnificent. The view of the mountains and the famed Great Adirondack Camp Topridge was unbeatable. And all of this while staying in a Yurt that felt and looked more like a five star hotel than any camping experiences I have ever had.
We thank the hosts for the thoughtful attention put in to providing such a graciousness accommodation in a spectacular primitive setting. It was a carefree stay. My husband and I look forward to many more vacations at this location.
Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your kind words about your Topridge Overlook getaway with us. We look forward to welcoming you again as your schedule permits.

Sincerely,
Lynn and Jim Cameron

Peace and quiet in a beautiful setting

What a wonderful escape to an exceptionally nice location! After parking at the boat landing, we were cheerfully escorted by boat to the yurt, which overlooks the lake, with a good view of famous Camp Topridge to boot (many celebs and presidents have been there, etc).

We were surprised how comfortable the yurt was, as we had never stayed in a structure like that. There was a large and very comfortable bed, a full-size refrigerator, coffee maker, barbecue grill, and a radio to listen to NPR. Each morning, we'd listen to the haunting call of the loons that live on the lake.

There are canoes you can use to really explore the lake. An incredible place and the owners were terrific to deal with. I give this five stars and we can't wait unil we get a chance to return!

Learning to Paddle

5 of 5
Submitted: June 14, 2012 Stayed: May 2012
It was lightly raining as we stood on the appointed dock waiting to be picked up by the Camerons. Droplets were gracefully tapping down onto the mirrored surface of Upper St. Regis Lake. They splashed playfully into our faces as Lynn transported us to our island. They danced on the roof of our yurt as we explored the cylinder "tent" designated to be our home for the next week. They put us to sleep like a natural lullaby that night. The following morning we awoke to the sunshine lifting wisps of lingering fog off the lake and shinning purer than gold into our yurt. "It's not uncommon to come to the Adirondacks for 7 days and have it rain for 3 of them," Lynn told us. We had unaltered sun for the following duration of our stay. It was with us as we hiked, as we swam, as we played cards on our floating dock, as we grilled our meals on the deck, as we learned to canoe together, as my husband and I began our life together, as we allowed ourselves to slow down and unwind and simply listen to the world absent of demands and pressures and appointments. It was exactly what we desired for our honeymoon and adequately taught us "how to paddle together" and learn how to face the rest of our lives as one.

The yurt contained everything we needed to cook, clean, and occupy our minds for a week. Everything was clean and orderly. We always knew that Lynn and Jim were just a call away if we needed anything but the yurt was so self-sufficient that it was never necessary for us to bother them. I have already recommended this yurt and the surrounding areas to my friends and family and will continue to do so in the future. It really was the perfect setting for a relaxing week embedding in the very heart of nature.
Owner's Response: A big thanks to this couple for being our very first honeymooners to review Topridge Overlook on HomeAway.com. While not always as detailed as this one, since '05 our guests have left terrific comments like this one in the Guestbook. You can read stories from St. Regis right below here. Why not book your own week of peaceful togetherness and make a story all your own to share here and everywhere?

"...allowed us to rest in the arms of Nature..."

"In contrasting relationship to the last entry and previous guests, my husband and I began our week here just two days after our marriage and the voicing of our vows. We found this wholistic setting perfect for our first week as husband and wife. I, personally, enjoyed learning how to canoe, specifically because it allowed me to spy on all of the old camp buildings I had read about earlier in the week. Jeff, even more simply, enjoyed the serenity of a week absent of any demands, plans, or work (this was his first extended vacation in 3 years as lead Brewer at Troegs). I think, for both of us, this yurt and its picturesque location, took our lives, stripped them to their "barest essentials", and allowed us to rest in the uncomplicated arms of nature. As we leave here our lives, and therefore our love, has no choice but to build upon these "essentials", providing us with a strong foundation in which to truly begin our marriage. Or, so we hope...Thank you, Lynn & Jim, for this important portion of our honeymoon and part in our marriage."

Surrounded by fish & squirrels & tree spirits. This was the perfect moment for our journey: Peace, Joy and all of nature conspiring around us. We spent sunny and windy days lazily paddling around the deserted lake, catching and releasing the gigantic noble fish who nibbled on our lines. It was absolute HEAVEN!"
