About Kay or Augusto

We are a couple with four children who have enjoyed living in Bar Harbor since 1995. We are both architects and have lovingly restored this gem of a home to its glory while incorporating modern amenities and our own touches. We own another Bar Harbor property as well - the Cottage on Cottage - and enjoy traveling (we always rent homes when we travel and enjoy being able to provide similar comfort to other travelers!)

Kay or Augusto purchased this house in 2000

Why Kay or Augusto chose Bar Harbor

We purchased this home because having had few owners before us, it had retained most of its original features and charm, and as architects, we knew good bones when we saw them! Since then, the home has been totally renovated, and serves as an excellent design laboratory - even our most discerning clients have appreciated the hospitality and ambiance of this home!

What makes this house unique

The fireplaces, the wooden fretwork, the massive entry columns, oversized front door, the diamond paned windows...they just don't make them like this anymore! Elegant, but livable and oh, so well located!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful experience at Kay and Augusto's house in Bar Harbor. The location was perfect, within walking distance to everything in the town. The house was the perfect size for us, 5 couples. We had space to be together and to be alone as well. We cooked most of our meals at the house and were pleased to see the kitchen so well appointed. Kay was very helpful, even checking in with us when she'd heard the power had gone out. The outage didn't last long and was back on before dark. I would love to come back to Maine and their house is the perfect place to stay. Thanks to Kay, Augusto and Anne for making our stay memorable.

Nice, but needs attention.

  • 3 of 5
Having returned from a week's vacation in Bar Harbor I wanted to share a few of the observations my family and I made with regard to this property.

The house is centrally located-which allows for easy access to grocery, bakery, restaurants and other points of interest in Bar Harbor. The online photos do in fact depict the inside décor however since the photos have been taken some wear has occurred.
Immediately upon entering the home an odor is noticed-We attempted to utilize febreeze and air fresheners/candles to rid the smell however were unsuccessful. Odor appears to be more profound in some areas of the house over other areas.
Bathrooms are all old/outdated-Downstairs bathroom (near media room) is extremely small-made you feel like you were inside of a box while showering. No outlets were available in the bathrooms to allow for hair drying-My sisters and I were forced to utilize one bedroom as our hair/makeup/changing room as there were working outlets and a portable mirror.
Numerous light switches throughout the house were inoperable and/or mislabeled (i.e. the switch for the kitchen was never found between the refrigerator and wall). The "media room" provided an assortment of wires/cables running everywhere, adding to the general cluttered appearance.
We all commented the rental property could benefit from a deep cleaning as many of the windows had cob webs-Some hidden by curtains. The upholstery furniture located in the in the front seating room and media room could benefit from a steam cleaning. Additionally, we noted there was a constant mustiness/dampness while sitting on the couches/chairs.

Lovely home, but you can find better for the price

  • 3 of 5
This house is has a lot of upsides and downsides, so I'll share them both...

What I/we loved: The house is beautiful inside and out, most of the decor is tasteful, and the kitchen is set up well for family eating. There is a lot of space and different areas for people to their thing. The house is old and has tons of character that comes with older homes. The owners are communicative and were very responsive to a problem we raised. The location is great - aside from a more expensive waterfront location, this is the second best option - you can walk to any place downtown and to other points of interest in town. It's also close to some especially tasty places, like 2 Cats for breakfast. The place feels homey - there are boardgames, books, magazines, etc.

The downsides: Along with the charming aspects of an older home come the negatives - the bathrooms are old (most faucets have separate taps for hot and cold water), we couldn't find an outlet in reach of a mirror for drying one's hair, some of the lights are an electrical mess and look downright scary (this coming from an engineer in our group), it's hard to find the light switches, it was a little musty in some rooms, and the downstairs bathroom and TV room had cobwebs and spiders. The shower situation also wasn't ideal - there is one shower on the floor that has 4 bedrooms and sleeps 8 guests (the master bedroom has a bath but no shower). The first floor shower is so tiny that it's hard to keep your hair dry or bend over enough to wash your feet.

We also had an unfortunate problem of finding many hairs and other debris on the sheets on all of the beds. The owners were very responsive and brought over new sheets the next day. (I assume the sheets had been washed but that the washing service is sub par.) But, it sucked to stay up until 2 a.m. on the day we arrived washing bedding.

Now that I've been to Bar Harbor and seen other houses that folks rented, I also think I could find something that's a bit of a better bargain - this house is expensive given some of the downsides.

In summary, this house is a lovely option, but you can probably do better.

Owner's Response: This was the last time we used the cleaning service we had been using up to this point! We are sorry these renters were inconvenienced, and did a number of things to remedy the situation, including providing brand new sheets (the others were definitely clean, but seemed to have picked up a few hairs with static), offered to refund the cleaning fee, and subsequently changed cleaning services. We are very happy with the new service, and the renters since then have reported satisfaction as well! It is so important to us to make sure things are right for our guests and if they are not, that we make them right. For that reason, we have worked with this reviewer to make sure we are able to address these concerns adequately and also had the electrical systems inspected and all is in good order. We continue to believe our home is a wonderful value with 5 bedrooms/4 bathrooms, lots of comfortable gathering spaces, the ability to cook in or grill out while on vacation, and a fabulous walkable location! This home is historic and we have tried to maintain as much of that character as we can, which includes original claw foot tubs, belle époque sinks, etc. If you have any questions, please ask!

Beautiful, Spacious Home in a Prime Location!

  • 5 of 5
My family and absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful home! The home was decorated beautifully and each room had its own distinct feel. Additionally, the home was spotless, and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes and utensils while the bathrooms had plenty of towels. As much as we loved spending time in the home drinking coffee on the porch or reading in the library, one of the most wonderful things about this home is the location. It is an easy walk to the grocery store, restaurants, shops, and the waterfront. We loved the accessibility to town that this home offered. I would most definitely recommend this lovely home to other families!

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5
I really enjoyed my stay there. The rooms are very well decorated and I like that each room has its own characteristics. The pictures included in the listing truthfully depict the property. I particularly like that Kay and Augusto keep a lot of books in the house and I got to read some of those before sleep every night. The kitchen is well-equipped and there are plenty of bath towels for our use. One nit-picky thing is that the family room and the formal dining room have the smell of old houses, probably because they were not used very often, but the other rooms are all fine. The location is very convenient - very walkable to restaurants and the grocery store. Kay was very responsive and helpful during the inquiry and rental process.

Owner's Response: We are so happy we were able to accommodate this last minute, early season reservation, and also glad the weather turned nice for their stay after a long period of spring cold and drizzle (and yes, we had just opened the family room wing of the house! Should be nicely aired out now)!
