The Abel Curtis House is nestled in the historic village of Interlaken in Stockbridge. This neighborhood offers wonderful country walks through a great concentration of historic buildings, bridges, and gardens. There is little traffic on most of these roads. This area was developed two hundred years ago to take advantage of the water power provided by water flowing out of the Stockbridge Bowl. As a result, we are surrounded by waterfalls and streams, and we can easily walk to the lake.
The house itself was built in 1804 by the Curtis family. (Interlaken used to be called Curtisville.) Virtually all of its historic features are still in place. The apartment is located in the upper part of the back wing so guests would enter through the arched carriage barn and ascend their own antique back staircase. The apartment has very wide board floors, a high ceiling, and a cupola above. There is also a wonderful balcony overlooking the garden and mountains beyond. The kitchen and bath are completely renovated. This apartment has a wide open floor plan from kitchen to sleeping area. Two double beds look out through the French doors.

My 9 year daughter, her father and I stayed for a week while enjoying Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow and other cultural and outdoor activities, all of which were an easy 15 drive from the Abel Curtis House. The loft was so relaxing after a tiring day and the beds were extremely comfy.
The host family and their daughters were very nice and accomodating and while we didn't end up doing any cooking while there, Jay did offer the use of their outdoor grill. We DID, however, help ourselves to the yummy tomatoes growing in the garden. Delightful stay overall.
We stayed for three nights in mid-September. We were delighted by the serene setting on which the apartment is situated. The apartment itself was extremely comfortable and my fiancee and I both agreed that it is a great place for sleeping, reading and just enjoying nature. Jay was wonderful to work with by being responsive and giving great directions. The apartment is very close to restaurants in Lenox and Stockbridge as well as Tanglewood and Kripalu. We plan to return as soon as our busy schedules allow for some more solace.
The pictures do not do this place justice! We were so comfortable staying here. The proprietors (and their adorable daughters) were so helpful, yet discreet and allowed for our privacy. The re-furbished barn is elegant and under-stated, comfortable and very spacious. The views and property are exceptional. Very centrally located yet quiet and peaceful. Impeccably clean, exceptional beds and bedding and so close to Tanglewood and all the other attractions of the beautiful Berkshires. We will definitely be back!
My mother and I spent a weekend at this carriage-house loft in the Berkshires, and it provided just the rest and relaxation we needed. The property is beautiful (with the charms of traditional architecture as well as the convenience of modern updates) and perfectly positioned between Lenox and Stockbridge, so that going into town was quite easy (even though we, for the most part, enjoyed just being in the countryside, sitting in Adirondack chairs and lounging in the hammock). I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family, and hope to return at some point myself. Thanks for a terrific weekend!
