5 bedrooms (4 with lake views + a children's room), huge patio

From April to September, Tauhara Sunrise is available as a vacation rental. (It operates as a 5 star hosted boutique lodge from October to March). The main house (6000 square feet/600 sm) has two levels. Downstairs are a king suite and a queen suite, both with en-suites and beautiful lake views, separated by a large kitchenette. Each suite has a flat screen TV, individual satellite TV decoder, sound system, DVD player and heat pump. Upstairs is the master suite with spa bath, TV with satellite decoder, & heat pump, plus a children's room with two beds, TV & adjacent bathroom, plus the kitchen, dining and living rooms. Outside the dining & living area is a massive patio with 6 person spa under a covered section of the patio. A romantically appointed luxury cottage sits on the rear of the property and has its own vehicle entrance. It has a king bed, gas fire, lounge area with kitchenette, bathroom with double shower, double spa bath & double vanity. It also has a flat screen TV with sky satellite and a Denon sound system. All beds (except children) have 1000 thread count sheets.

The dining table seats 8 comfortably, but with the addition of an extension table can seat 10-12. The views of the city lights at night from the dining room are spectacular. The living room has a lovely log fire (firewood in the garage). There is a wood fired pizza oven in the back courtyard, as well as a gas barbeque.

We are happy to make one of our vehicles available if desired, plus a men's mountain bike. We also have tennis rackets and golf clubs which you may use. There are community tennis courts across the road.

It is a 5 minute walk down to a lovely local restaurant which has a pizza menu, a bar menu and a full restaurant menu (it takes 10 minutes to walk back up the hill)! It is a 10 minute walk down to Acacia Bay.

About Rob McEwen

Rob is a New Zealander whose family vacationed at Lake Taupo when he was growing up. He spent 19 years in Austin, Texas and his wife Becky is from Austin. Rob owned his own marketing firm in Austin, while Becky worked in the mortgage industry.

Before leaving Austin for New Zealand in 2002, Becky trained to become a massage therapist. Since 2002, Rob & Becky have hosted thousands of international guests at their boutique lodge. Rob also was involved in the establishment of the NZ Clean Energy Centre in Taupo and the establishment of the Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles. He enjoys fly fishing, music & hiking, while Becky loves hiking and being a massage therapist.

Why Rob McEwen chose Taupo Central

After 19 years in Texas, Becky and I toured New Zealand's North Island looking for the perfect spot to build our dream. We visited Taupo and were hooked. It offers everything we'd missed about NZ - a vast natural playground for hiking & fishing, fabulous golf, easy access to the Hawkes Bay Wine District as well as Rotorua and the Waitomo glow worm caves, and absolutely stunning scenery.

We were most fortunate to find this property which offers 180 degree panoramas of Lake Taupo and the mountains, and purpose built the house and cottage to maximize the views.

What makes this house unique

We built this house while living in Texas. When we moved back to New Zealand to live in July 2002, we had not yet seen our completed house. My brother, who lived in Taupo at the time, had been project managing the construction for us. I remember opening the front door, stepping inside, and going 'wow.' The wood floors, the dramatic entrance lobby, the stonework, the hot tub, the views, the decor (we had a fabulous interior designer) - it all just blew us away. It is contemporary yet casual and the colors are very relaxing. It has a very earthy feel. And of course, with me (Rob) being a music lover, it has a great sound system.
