San Andrés y Providencia Villa Rental Photos and Description
4 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms, Accommodates up to TEN people
Do you dream of waking to a glorious pink sunrise? Stepping out onto your balcony, perched just above the calm turquoise waters? Are you dreaming of having a personal chef, to prepare you and your guests a sumptuous morning breakfast on the terrace?
Tropical juices, coffee, fresh cut papaya. Maybe a few organic eggs with some delicious Colombian arepas. Perhaps a young sweet coconut to finish. How else to start a beautiful vacation..?
El Monasterio del Viento (Monastery of the Wind) sits on the small volcanic island of Old Providence y Santa Catalina; hidden away in the most remote corner of the Caribbean. This island personifies what paradise truly is.
How does one define paradise? For myself it starts with being surrounded by warm, loving and caring people. A place where nature and all her gifts are valued and protected. An environment of peace and tranquility. Harmonious and unified, not fragmented nor exploited.
Located on Maracaibo Bay, El Monasterio is perched above a 'sea of seven shades of turquoise' looking out towards Cayo Cangrejo, directly within the borders of the National Park McBean Lagoon. This is part of the expansive UNESCO designated marine territory called the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve.
The house itself has been lovingly restored with charming artistic details throughout. It represents the best of Caribbean style living. It's comfortable and casual with spectacular views of the water in every direction. A soft sea breeze is continuous year round and can be enjoyed throughout the house.
Start your day from the yoga/meditation palapa over the water upon sunrise and then later, around siesta time from one of the many hammocks strung up around house. Take a nap or relax with cool island cocktail and some of your favorite music. (Note: My personal choice is Ron Zacapa Reserve 23 or Havana Club Anejo 7 year)
Inside the house there are four (4) large, light and airy bedrooms with four (4) full bathrooms. Three (3) bathrooms are en-suite. There is a spacious living and dining area, complete with floor to ceiling french doors that open onto a large stone terrace with plunge pool and outdoor dining area.
Snorkeling, Kayaking, and Kitesurfing in the gentle warm waters are literally right in front of you. Paddle over to Crab Cay!! Just step into the water in front of the house if you feel like going for a swim. If you're the type of person who prefers to laze around on an idyllic white sandy beach all day, then you're in for a treat. There are numerous long stretches of shaded beaches, two of which come with the most friendly little beach bars. One is owned by my good friend Richard Hawkins..aka.'.Mr Richards' on Southwest Bay. The other is Roland's Roots Bar on Manzanillo Beach. I won't say anything more than you'll want to cancel your return flight after hanging out here for the afternoon!
Other activities include...
- Trail Hiking to the peak ( an easy 2 hour hike )
- Guided horseback riding in the hills or beaches.
- Guided Artisanal fishing.
- Fantastic scuba diving.
With the world's 3rd longest continuous barrier reef, immense underwater biodiversity, warm tropical waters and excellent underwater visibility, Old Providence is Colombia's top diving destination. Once again all of the surrounding seas and reef areas have been designated as a marine protected area by UNESCO. There is an excellent dive operation on the Island called 'Felipe's' and he can accommodate all your needs.
Back at El Monasterio our talented and loving chef Ms. Dilcia is ready to prepare and share with you some of her delicious island recipes. Typical island dinners feature locally caught fresh fish, crab, conch and lobster. If you are a vegetarian or prefer something different NO problem...there are plenty of unique island grown vegetables and fruits to savor. Please note--- the HOUSEKEEPING and CHEF SERVICES are always INCLUDED in the rates listed. This way you're free to enjoy your vacation without having to always think about meal times, arranging restaurants, locations, schedules, shopping for food, preparing, cleaning up, etc.
The property is perfectly suited for honeymooners, families, weddings, groups or as a 'retreat destination'. Also consider it, if you're in need of a complete 'DIGITAL DETOX'. The house is best appreciated when you can just unplug and unwind.
As mentioned earlier it's absolutely an ideal house to base a Kite-surfing or Kayaking vacation. We have a two person kayak at the house for you to use anytime and can arrange for more if needed. There is also a person on the island that can give you lessons at Kite-surfing for a reasonable cost.
If you're interested in seeing a really beautiful video that gives the feel of the island and its' culture please search 'VIMEO Scott Sporleder' or 'VIMEO Juan Felipe Cortes'. Sorry but this site does not allow for hyperlinks. Scott's video is titled 'Isla Providencia' and Juan's is titled 'Roots'.
Finally, one personal thought that's very close to my heart. To me I feel that the Raizal families of Old Providence are truly blessed. It is such an honor to be around a community of people that are so warm, generous and respectful. If you get a chance to go to the island, please take time to experience fully in their way of living. Their calm, balanced and peaceful outlook. Find the opportunity to sit down with a local family to immerse yourself in an old story about the colorful history of the island. Perhaps a visit to a beautiful garden in the mountains tended to by a well known farmer. Or possibly getting to befriend a gifted artist or talented chef. Calypso music is also a very rich part of the Raizal heritage. Something extremely unique to this part of the Caribbean. If you're a music lover like me, you might be able to spend some time with a local legend named Willy T. and his fellow group of musicians. Lastly, please make sure you set aside time for the horse races that take place on Saturdays, directly on the beach at Southwest Bay. It's an unforgettable spectacle...
Make sure you have your camera.
Get to know the locals and make every effort you can to DIRECTLY support them in a sustainable and equitable way.

About Paul Hoffman
I manage the reservations for this unique beautiful home. If you need any questions answered about this house or about the Island, that's what I'm here for.
I'm best described as a person who loves authentic people and experiences. Trying each day to respect my true nature and explore my own unique qualities. For me, less is more... having the time and freedom to discover ALL the beauty. I just want to feel alive, present.
The Caribbean has been a passion of mine over many years. How I still live in mountains surrounding Santa Fe, New Mexico is beyond me !! Maybe its' the balance I get from spending time in both places. It somehow speaks to me. I love being around people but also enjoy my bouts of solitude. I feel my strengths include compassion for other beings, equanimity and patience. I don't really feel the need to dwell on any weaknesses. My view is that we might not be skilled in certain areas. That makes sense! Focus on your talents and don't get hung up on things!! Learn to trust and express your unique talents.
