3 bedrooms, one bath, in hill top historic miners cottage

Step back in time, and stay in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lead, South Dakota. At the time of its founding, the neighborhood was primarily occupied by English miners. The Konola family emigrated from Finland and moved to this neighborhood soon after gold was discovered in the Black Hills. Next door to the cottage where you’ll be staying, is the original Konola homestead.

This historic cottage, purchased by Claudette Konola's grandfather in 1932, is filled with family art and antiques. Near the top of a hill, at the edge of town, it is a quiet place to celebrate with family. There is little street traffic, and where city meets wilderness is less than a block away.

Morning coffee can be enjoyed on a deck overlooking the historic Homestake Mine, once one of the largest gold mines in the world. Visitors for that coffee might include camp robbers, deer and turkeys. Sunset can be enjoyed in a front yard landscaped with wild roses and bluebells, with an occasional finch splashing in the bird bath.

Day trips into the surrounding Black Hills will bring you to museums celebrating the Wild West and gold rush days. Historic Deadwood is only three miles away. Now a gambling city, it has lots of good eating and excitement for everyone. If an outdoor adventure is more your style, there are hiking/biking trails throughout the Black Hills, as well as excellent fishing in streams and lakes with swimming holes and water skiing.

Mt. Rushmore is about 50 miles away, as is Crazy Horse. The beautiful drive to these destinations will take you past beautiful lakes and through lush pine forests.

This cottage is the perfect place for a couple's romantic get away or for a small family. There are three beds, all new and comfortable--2 are double beds, one is a twin bed. There are enough dishes, glasses and silverware to host a sit-down dinner party for 8. Commonly used spices are in the cupboard for your use. You might even find cans of soup or spaghetti sauce just in case you arrive late and are hungry.

The bath contains an old fashioned claw foot tub, which is fantastic after a day of hiking the hills. If a shower is more your style that's available too.

The basement bedroom (double bed) has its own external access through a back door. There is a washer and dryer available in the basement also.

Cable connections and TV monitors are in the Living Room, Upstairs bedroom (twin bed) and Laundry room. High speed internet connections are located in the upstairs Office.

About Claudette Konola

I am the third generation of Konola to own this property. I currently live in western Colorado with a very spoiled shelter dog, where I garden and work on keeping air, soil, and water safe and clean for future generations..

Why Claudette Konola chose Lead

My grandfather bought this property during the great depression. While most of America was unemployed, the mine was busy producing gold for sale to the federal government. He installed the first indoor plumbing in 1932, and it is still there!

What makes this cottage unique

This is truly a home filled with generations of family memories. It is perfect for a quiet get away for two or for a family with young children. My grandparents raised three children in this house, so it is used to the hustle and bustle of kids.

Notes: The property is generally winterized and closed up for the winter, although the town is home to ski mountains. Long term winter rentals would be considered. Ask. This is an historic cottage that is well maintained. As any historic property, It has its charms and its flaws. Access to the attic is through the master bedroom, and access to the basement is through a trapdoor in the kitchen. It is probably most comfortable for two couples or one couple and their kids.

Our first trip to the Black Hills, S. D

We wanted to see as much as possible of the Black Hills Area in our six day stay. This charming, beautifully furnished cottage provided the perfect "Home away from Home" for our vacation. The location in Lead is convenient to hiking, biking, boating, horseback riding and within an easy drive of Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. And, for the gambler, Deadwood Casinos are just two miles down the road. Lead is a quaint small town without an abundance of restaurants. However, we found a great breakfast/lunch cafe' on Main St called Spankies and had a very nice lunch one day at the Roundhouse, which also displayed a very attractive dinner menu. For a large selection of buffets, steakhouses and fine dining, again, Deadwood is two miles down the road. My favorite was the Deadwood Social Club, one of the best meals I've had in a while!

Back to the Lead Cottage.......It comes complete with high speed Internet and anything you could possibly need if not planning to eat out, including fresh vegetables in the garden! Our favorite feature was the backyard deck, which we enjoyed for morning coffee and a glass of wine in the evening. If it was too chilly for sitting outside, the enclosed front porch was equally comfortable.

I would recommend this accommodation to anyone.

Stay for Sturgis Rally

My husband, myself and three other friends rented this house during the Sturgis rally. It was very neat and clean and had all the necessities of our week long stay. The owner even had food in the cupboard in case we didn't feel like going to the store when we arrived and were hungry. There was a nice deck out back where we enjoyed morning coffee with a great view. The location is very convienent to Sturgis as well as Deadwood, where there are casinos and many buffets that we enjoyed for breakfast and dinner occasionally. The owner was quick to respond to any questions we had. This is an old house, which made it more charming, and has been well maintained.
I would definitely recommend it and would stay there again if I were to visit the area.
Owner's Response: What a wonderful guest! Thanks for privately sending me some suggestions for ways that the property could be more convenient for guests. They were all things I simply hadn't thought of, and will be implemented before our next guest arrives.

Mornings on the deck are nice. Sometimes deer and wild turkeys show up to share your coffee!
