About Erica K.

An entrepreneur by nature, I have enjoyed the freedom and flexibility that a self directed path can provide. I have loved to travel and annually embark upon both a beach vacation and an exotic destination in a far away continent - you will find exotic mementos from my travels adorn El Milagro and inspire the eclectic sampling of the world within. Growing up in Tucson and feeling a connection to this style of architecture/ property, I wanted to name my special Casa to honor my connection to the heritage of the house, hence the name El Milagro - which means The Miracle of the Neighborhood - a miracle to own a home, a miracle this place has stood 135 years - a miracle of light and laughter within---. While home in Tucson, I love to landscape, You will see me working on my properties tending to the mesquite trees, Peruvian apple cactus a native willow or assisting guests at El Milagro and other homes. I have always enjoyed cooking - entertaining friends and family and hosting many social events, and look forward to hosting you during your stay in Tucson!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Built in the 1880's, El Milagro has been beautifully remodeled and decorated maintaining its Tucson-inspired charm (for the unfamiliar, that does not mean howling coyotes statues and turquoise). From the original 18" thick mud walls to spa-like bathrooms (two of them) and a beautiful dining room; the interior of this casita has all of the loving touches of its long-time owner Erica. Plenty of luxury towels and linens along with a ready-to-cook kitchen and outdoor grilling area await (and a bottle of wine and chocolates from Trader Joe's). Erica is ready to answer any questions should you have them, without interfering if you don't. Oh, the back yard. It's truly an oasis. Beautiful cacti and desert plants adorn the yard to create a relaxing experience. Hummingbirds darting about from flower to flower and whiptail skinks scurrying about under the blooming ground cover, this backyard is not to be missed, just make sure you have your coffee in the mornings or beverages in the evenings, because you have the best spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful AZ climate. If you understand Tucson and it's rich heritage, you will know this is an old neighborhood with barking dogs in the front yards and some houses that shouldn't be inhabited (but are). This is partly what makes this experience authentic. Barrio Anita seems to understand the role this small neighborhood plays in the story of the Old Pueblo. Rather than being put off by some of the boarded-up windows or empty lots with desert scrub, know that this is classic Tucson and you are deep in the heart of an amazing Southern Arizona experience. Venture south a few blocks to explore the downtown area, including historic mansions, the beautiful Pima County courthouse complex and other local gems (even catch a glimpse of the setting moon over "A" Mountain). The Davis Elementary Bilingual magnet school is across the street and during the week you can enjoy the sounds of a Mariachi band playing from it's steps while you sit on the covered front porch. Finally, don't miss the opportunity to take a stroll down to the Anita Street Market for some amazing tortillas and Mexican food....

Cozy, comfortable and well provisioned delight.

The property and the hostess were flawless. Everything you need is at your disposal. The furnishings were comfortable and the patio provides a great place for meals that you can prepare in the fully equipped kitchen. Absolutely will return when the opportunity arises.

Erica is the hostess with the mostest.

  • 5 of 5

We come to Tucson every year for the Gem and Mineral Show. We have been renting houses for several years, and this 1880’s casita is our favorite so far. When we arrived, we were greeted by a bottle of wine, chocolates, and new doggy toys and bed for our furry companions. Throughout our stay, Erica was easily accessible when we needed her for restaurant recommendations or for anything else. We never wanted for anything since the house was so well-appointed, but if we did, we are sure that Erica would have happily provided for us. The house was decorated exceptionally well, and the backyard was a little desert sanctuary.

We also enjoyed that the house is in such close proximity to just about everything – downtown eating, grocery stores, parks, and Gem Show venues. We never had any problem with parking, and we never felt unsafe.

Many thanks to our wonderful hostess! We loved everything so much that we’ve already booked another stay at El Milagro del Barrio Anita for next year!

We love our perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at El Milagro Del Barrio Anita on several different trips to Tucson. I stopped looking for any other place to stay after finding this charming 1880’s house in downtown Tucson. The casita is absolutely wonderful, and Erica, property owner, does a superb job of making it feel like home away from home. The furnishings, floors, adobe walls and kiva fireplace are beautiful. The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need, if you want to cook in. We have always loved the big BBQ in the back yard! When you arrive, you'll find a bag of goodies to get you started on your vacation (milk, juice, fresh fruit, bread and always a sweet treat!). The quiet yard is beautiful and secluded, with the sounds of a water fountain. The landscaping is beautiful, the property is immaculate and exceptionally clean. Internet access, CD player, DVD/Video and washer/dryer, make it very easy to never leave this abode. The neighborhood may look rough, but it is absolutely great and you're just a pleasant 2 minute walk to downtown with great shops and restaurants in the Presidio District. Erica is responsive and will follow up immediately if you run into any problems and is always helpful with recommendations and reservations. Each year that I've returned, she's added some new touch to the property to make it even more special – this year the hall bath was re-done with Carrera marble – for an intense spa feel. Overall, this is a very delightful and wonderful historic retreat!! El Milagro Del Barrio Anita is not to be missed!

Beware of the train

  • 2 of 5

I debated between a 2 and 3 star rating for this home. I went with 2 because the train noise and the quality of the neighborhood are too much to overcome. The house itself is adequate but nothing exceptional to note outside of the back yard. I would recommend spending a bit more and looking for a better location (better neighborhood, away from the train tracks).

The train noise here is considerable - I'm shocked it's not the first thing mentioned in every review. The train crossing is very close and trains are active all day and night with horns blaring (every couple of hours). Ear plugs are a necessity for all but the heaviest sleepers. We had some folks in our party who were awakened even using ear plugs.

The neighborhood is definitely a bit sketch. We drove in at 1am on the first night and folks in my party were pretty concerned (and it was a group of guys). There was never a time where we felt unsafe, but it is a little scary when you first drive in. I was hoping this would be walking distance to the University but it is really too far to walk. It is on the bus route I think, but we did not make use of it.

Erika is a wonderful host. The house was clean with plenty of towels and chocolates and wine left for us. She is available to answer questions and take care of any issues there may be.

The back yard is nice except for the train noise. I agree with other reviewers that a great morning is to walk down to Anita's market, grab burritos and empenadas to go, and make some coffee and enjoy the Tucson weather in the back yard.

The only TV is a small one in one of the bedrooms. This normally isn't an issue for me, but this was a guys trip for a football game/weekend. There is no where to really sit and visit and watch TV in the house. The family room is just too small and isn't an inviting place to sit and visit with a group. Again this is more of an FYI and not a major knock against the property - sitting out back is the way to go here to enjoy the Tucson weather.

There is a school on the opposite corner from the house. This isn't a negative remark but just to let people know. There is some school traffic and typical kids/noise during the week. Also there are some parking restrictions during the week but there was plenty of street parking available during our stay even with the restrictions (only street parking available).

Charming home!

  • 5 of 5

My family rented this home while in Tucson for my master's graduation from University of Arizona. I cannot say more good things about this home! Incredibly charming and well decorated- amazing attention to detail. There is a HUGE backyard with multiple** tables for entertaining, lounging, drinking coffee, etc. The backyard has great landscaping and is very private. House was very clean, and the full kitchen was great- including coffee maker (AND coffee), pots/pans etc.

You will need to rent a car if you are looking to explore Tucson, but it is close to everything in a quiet neighborhood. Free street parking. Close to Gates Pass, I-10, "A" mountain, and a few blocks from downtown. I will never let my family stay anywhere OTHER than here.

Management was responsive and great to work with- and this was an affordable option, especially with 4 family members coming down to visit. I am unbelievably pleased with our experience here. Thank you so much!
